EngineeringSAThe South Australia Division’s Newsletter South Australia Division
A Message From The PresidentWelcome back everyone from the Christmas and New Year break. I trust that you all had a relaxing and enjoyable time with your families, and look forward to the new year with renewed strength and enthusiasm to contribute to our great profession.
I would like to start this message with a brief reflection on 2010. The theme for 2010 was the Year of Engineering Leadership, and we have been very fortunate during the year to have seen leadership in action from the two Doug’s; Prof Doug Hargreaves FIEAust CPEng EngExec who was National president, and Doug Gillott FIEAust CPEng who was President of Engineers Australia in South Australia.
At the national level the Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management held an outstanding national leadership conference in Brisbane which was attended by more than 600 delegates. The highlight of the conference was the ability of both young and more experienced engineers to network and learn about leadership. As part of the Year of Engineering Leadership an engineering leadership survey was conducted on behalf of Engineers Australia to find out what are the top leadership attributes and behaviours of engineers. The top three attributes of a ‘Great Leader’ are: trustworthiness, honesty and integrity; and the top three behaviours are: leads by example, able to communicate and sell their vision, and understands the people they are leading. A copy of the summary report can be accessed on the Engineers Australia website at http://tinyurl.com/296me5y.
Other legacies from the Year of Engineering Leadership include a new annual week long Engineering Leadership Residential Program, the first of which was held in October 2010 in regional Victoria; continuing the Ambassadors Program, in which senior influential members of the engineering team promote key messages for Engineers Australia; and providing forums for engaging with all members of Engineers Australia on major issues for Australia. The first such forum approach has engaged with the membership on the issue of a sustainable population for Australia.
Here in South Australia, our Parliamentary Fellows Program (PFP) has responded to the stated need from our members to be more influential with government, and is a great example of leadership from our Immediate Past President Doug Gillott. Most recently, our PFP Fellows have been provided with a technical briefing note on the serious issue of brake failure in heavy vehicles using the South East Freeway. This was generated in light of several serious runaway incidents, one of which caused a fatality in October 2010. The paper provides valuable information to assist our Parliamentary Fellows engage with their MP on this serious issue, which in turn will assist in finding an appropriate governmental or regulatory response to reduce the risk of future accidents and fatalities.
Looking ahead to 2011, I remind members that this is the Year of Humanitarian Engineering. I am excited at the opportunity this will provide to showcase the impact that engineers can and do have
on those less fortunate than ourselves, whether these are in Australia or overseas. I am currently meeting individually with each of the Chairs of our various technical branches, societies and committees to encourage them to engage with this theme in their various technical programs during 2011. Our Division Committee has also formed a small team to champion the Year of Humanitarian Engineering, consisting of the following members: Mark Brooking MIEAust, Anjan Kundu FIEAust CPEng, Guillermina Perelmuter FIEAust CPEng and Anh Tran GradIEAust. Please feel to contact this group via the South Australia Division with ideas which we might progress in South Australia around this theme.
Division Committee has also formed two other groups to champion two other objectives. One group consisting of Tim Browne MIEAust, Gerry Doyle MIEAust CPEng, Mark Jones MIEAust and John Olson RFD FIEAust CPEng EngExec FAICD will focus on how to engage better with engineers in the construction sector. The other group, consisting of Dr Cris Birzer MIEAust, Doug Gillott FIEAust CPEng, SQNLDR Fernando Gonzalez MScMESE(EW) MIEAust CPEng BEng MSc, Michelle Shi-Verdaasdonk MIEAust and myself will champion the development of a publication to showcase engineers in South Australia and their achievements.
Finally, I would like to encourage your attendance at the annual Sir Eric Neal Address, which is being held on the 24th February 2011. We are delighted to have secured the Former Premier of South Australia, Dr Lynn Arnold AO as the guest speaker. Dr Arnold is currently the Chief Executive of Anglicare SA, following eleven years with World Vision Australia and World Vision International. Anglicare SA is South Australia’s largest non-government agency involved in aged care, welfare delivery and community development, with over 1200 staff, and an annual budget of over $60 million.
I also remind members that the Excellence Awards Entries will be open early in 2011. Last year we had a record number of submissions all of which were of the highest quality, and the Excellence awards night was a sellout event, with over 350 registrations. I encourage all members to enter their projects for an award, since this is an ideal way to recognise the amazing contribution that members of the engineering team make to our community.

John Mannam was born Jovan Manhajm on 9 January 1918 in Piestany, Czechoslovakia (now Slovenia). John grew up on the family farm as the eldest of four brothers. He matriculated in 1936 and completed two years of a medical degree at the University in Vienna but was compelled to return to Yugoslavia when Germany invaded Austria. John migrated to the UK to escape World War II and graduated from Birmingham University with a BSc in 1942. Later, prior to his marriage to Isobel Heap of Montgomeryshire, he changed his name for practicality.
In 1946 he found employment as a works manager in Dunlop's electro-plating facility; while also teaching night-school technical subjects two nights per week. In 1947 he transferred to the Serck Radiator company as Research Engineer and soon applied his expertise in fluid dynamics by introducing turbulators to vastly improve the thermal efficiency of marine and aircraft heat exchangers.
During 1950-1952, John took up a teaching position at the Wolverhampton Technical College. He lectured in a number of technical subjects, designed student experimental work and prepared students for the London external engineering degree. In 1955 John started lecturing in Thermodynamics and Machine Design and in Advanced Mathematics within the Postgraduate Course. He contentedly held this appointment until 1959, when he noticed an advertisement for Lecturers in Mechanical Engineering for the University of Adelaide. Upon application, he was offered a position as Senior Lecturer effective from January 1960.
Within 3 years, the Dean of Engineering, the late Professor Frank Bull, took the unprecedented step of elevating John to the inaugural position of Reader to the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He held this uniquely prestigious position until 1983 when he retired to nurse Isobel during her long and painful struggle with a terminal illness.

He held this uniquely prestigious position until 1983 when he retired to nurse Isobel during her long and painful struggle with a terminal illness.
He was at various times a member of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London. He wrote and presented many papers in fluid dynamics and quietly fostered further research on gas bearings resulting in an Institution "best paper" joint prize and at least one patent to former students. He was fittingly invited to Chair the Keynote Session on Air Bearing Technology during the South Hampton International Fluid Dynamics Conference in 1969.
Mechanical Engineering graduates of his era at the University of Adelaide collectively owe Dr John Mannam an immense debt of gratitude for his patience, forbearance and ability to impart a real understanding of complex technical subjects from first principles. He drew on his own broad experience in solving practical engineering problems during and immediately after the war to extol a pragmatic approach in which a combination of theoretical knowledge with methodical testing, sound analysis and clarity in reporting were paramount.
In 2005 the Mechanical College Board submitted an application to Engineers Australia to name an award in his honour. This award is known as “The John Mannam Prize” and acknowledges Dr John Mannam’s major contributions to engineering practice and especially his dedication to his education and training and mentoring of mechanical engineers within his adopted University, City and Country.

Lessons learned by one aerospace structures engineer in a 40-year career This talk will look at some of the most important lessons about aircraft structures that the John has observed during a long career in the aircraft industry. The emphasis is on good ideas that have yet to be fully exploited. There are also warnings about bad ideas that should not be repeated. Past practices are shown to represent a very fertile source of good ideas that are still applicable today, even though some of them have fallen into disuse. It is shown that the development of significantly better aircraft structures is still possible through progressive refinements, without any need for revolutionary changes that introduce a whole new set of challenges to overcome. The emphasis is on technical issues, but it is explained how many of them never would have become an issue if appropriate business practices had been followed.Among the topics covered are the importance of the continuity in load paths, the need for long transition lengths to alleviate the effects of any eccentricities that cannot be eliminated, an outline of the relative merits and disadvantages of built-up and integrally stiffened structures, the disadvantages of steel and titanium fasteners that operate at higher bearing stresses than equivalent rivets, improved frame/stringer intersection design, the under-rated importance of ductility in the materials used to make aircraft structures, the need for a revision of the damage-tolerance approach to restore some of the fail-safety features, the importance of interface control to permit adequate tolerances for assembly, designing to avoid parasitic induced loads, designing efficient wing/fuselage junctions, and the unappreciated merits of secondary bonding in place of co-curing of composites.
Born and educated in Australia, Dr. L. J. Hart-Smith worked in the U.S. aerospace industry, with Douglas Aircraft and, ultimately, with Boeing. His work on adhesively bonded joints and bolted composite joints is renowned world-wide. His A4E joint analysis computer codes are used throughout the industry. He has also contributed much to creating scientifically sound analyses of the strength of composite laminates, being co-inventor of the SIFT failure criteria for fibre-polymer composites. In addition, he has become an expert in the design of fatigue-free aircraft fuselage structures, by designing better joints. He has recently completed the re-analysis of the classical buckling analyses, confirming that the experimentalists were right, after all, and that the predicted buckling stresses were too high, by factors ranging from 2 to 3 for the various cases. These new analyses represent the culmination of work started 45 years ago at Monash University.
John will be one of the Keynote Speakers at the 6th Australasian Applied Mechanics Congress, 12th – 15th December 2010, Perth: http://www.acam6.org/

12 November 2010 – South Australians have taken the 2010 Telstra Australian Business Women’s Awards by storm winning three of the six Awards announced in Melbourne last night.
The owner of SA’s largest traffic engineering consultancy, the first woman to be Professor of Physics at the University of Adelaide and a cheesemaker who has led the growth of the industry in SA were named as winners of the Awards.
In the best ever result by South Australian women in the history of the prestigious Awards that recognise the achievements of outstanding business women:
• Melissa Mellen, director and owner of Murray F. Young & Associates (MFY) of Fullarton, won the Commonwealth Bank Business Owner Award;
• Professor Tanya Monro, founder and director of the Institute for Photonics & Advanced Sensing at the University of Adelaide, won the White Pages Community and Government Award – 24 hours after being named the SA Australian of the Year 2011.
• Kris Lloyd, manager and head cheesemaker of Woodside Cheese Wrights and a director of SA’s annual industry CheeseFest event, won the Nokia Business Innovation Award.
Melissa Mellen, a chartered professional engineer, worked for Murray F. Young & Associates for a decade before buying the business in 2003. Under her leadership, the business has expanded to provide advice to private and government clients on about 400 traffic engineering projects a year throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Ms Mellen’s company has provided advice to airport redevelopments in Adelaide, Brisbane and Auckland and Awards judges said that she was highly regarded as an expert witness on traffic engineering matters.
Karen James, general manager affiliate business banking, Commonwealth Bank, said: “It is our pleasure to be sponsoring this award because it is a precious moment.
“Commonwealth Bank’s support of these awards and our commitment to our Women in Focus program is all affirmed by these shared moments. We congratulate Melissa Mellen and wish her all the best. She is an inspiration to the next generation of women aspiring to achieve the same success in their own businesses,” she said.
Winners of the Telstra Business Women’s Awards will receive a share of $200,000 in cash and prizes and become part of an exclusive national business alumni. For further information on the Telstra Business Women’s Awards: www.telstrabusinesswomensawards.com
