Guest Speakers
Thomas D. Jeitschko is a Professor of Economics
who serves as the Associate Provost for Graduate
Education and Dean of The Graduate School. He
supports the graduate students and postdocs of MSU
and oversees and supports the Masters, Professional,
and Ph.D. programs across the fourteen graduate degree granting colleges. Thomas
previously served as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in the College of
Social Science and he is also the Director of the American Economic Association
Summer Program—a two-month intensive pre-doctoral residential program that
prepares talented undergraduate students from under-represented backgrounds
for graduate work.
Jeitschko holds an advanced degree from the University of Münster in Germany
with a specialization in Economic History and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia
in 1995 with a specialization in Mathematical Economics. His research interests
are in applied economic theory with concentrations in industrial organization,
law and economics, and micro-economics more broadly. He has published in a
wide variety of journals, including the American Economic Review, the European
Economic Review, Games and Economic Behavior, Economic Theory, the Journal
of Law, Economics, and Organization, and the Journal of Industrial Economics; and
he is an associate editor of the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and
the International Journal of Industrial Organization, and an editorial board member
of the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics, in addition to holding
several other editorial appointments.
Jeitschko has also worked at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., as
an economist in the Antitrust Division where he was the lead economist on many
investigations of mergers and potentially anticompetitive fi rm conduct. In addition to
many other cases, he was the lead economist evaluating possible anti-competitive
eff ects of the proposed merger between the NYSE and the Deutsche Börse and
2018 graduate research sympos ium | 7
the proposed takeover of NYSE by Nasdaq and ICE, he was involved in investiga-
tions covering Medicaid and health insurance providers, and he has expertise in
fi nancial markets, securities and derivatives exchanges, OTC, indices; airlines at
slot-controlled airports; telecommunications and internet content provision; generic
drugs; patents and patent pooling; and auctions. He has advised and consulted
for states attorneys general offi ces throughout the U.S. concerning antitrust and
consumer protection matters and has been retained by the U.S. Department of
Justice as an expert.
Prior to his current appointment at MSU, Jeitschko has held faculty positions at
Royal Holloway College, University of London, and Texas A&M University, as well
as shorter appointments at Duke, Johns Hopkins, and Georgetown Universities,
and Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. Thomas is currently a collaborator
on two NSF grants and he regularly presents his research at invited seminars and
conferences throughout the U.S. and abroad and he also regularly presents before
Federal and International Agencies about his research in antitrust and consumer
protection.
Leo C. Kempel, professor of electrical and computer
engineering, is the ninth dean of the Michigan State
University College of Engineering.
His distinguished academic career includes serving
as acting dean of the college from March 2013 to
August 2014, prior to being named dean. He previously had served the college as
associate dean for research from 2008 to 2013.
Kempel leads nine academic units and has strengthened the college’s innovation
in the automotive, composite materials, energy, health care technologies, pave-
ment preservation, and security sectors. Under his leadership, two new academic
8 | msu college of eng ineer ing
departments have been established: the Department of Biomedical Engineering and
the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (joint with
the College of Natural Science). A new $60 million Bio Engineering Facility opened
in October 2016 for shared interdisciplinary research.
Kempel has led numerous eff orts to expand and strengthen the college’s research,
academic, and outreach missions. Since 2006, the college’s annual research expendi-
tures have risen to more than $50 million, and separately the College of Engineering
has exceeded its $80 million goal in MSU’s ongoing Empower Extraordinary $1.5
billion campaign by more than 16 percent to date.
He has been a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering since 1998.
Kempel received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1989, and
earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering in 1990 and a PhD degree from
the University of Michigan in 1994.
