Management Message

The fiscal 2014-15 was a year of transition, and today, Escorts is

decisively prepared for capitalising on tomorrow’s potential.

“Engineering the Fundamentals of Growth” – our recent corporate campaign – was launched with the intent of positioning Brand Escorts as a holistic engineering company. This positioning line is not just an agglomeration of fancy words. In fact, it is the very basis of our philosophy of responsible nation-building dovetailed with our legacy of co-creating customer value.

The campaign reflects our commitment to serving the priorities of the country, by leveraging our engineering prowess to address the building blocks that are core to the nation’s sustainable growth – agriculture and infrastructure. This crusade has found strong resonance among all our stakeholders and the positive feedback has been quite encouraging.

Escorts has always believed in creating partnerships that can help us serve our customers better. To improve internal process control and foster greater collaboration across our value chain, we have recently formed a partnership with the globally-reputed Cognizant Technology Solutions. This will result in mobile-enabling the workforce, strengthening integration, creating adaptive production lines and manufacturing practices and developing digital capabilities including analytics and mobility.

This strategic engagement is expected to create a positive impact on the entire Escorts ecosystem. Aligning our engineering expertise with Cognizant’s

Preparing for Tomorrow’s Potentialcapabilities will help all of our businesses unlock tremendous value. By leveraging organizational synergies and next-generation technologies, we will be able to improve performance efficiencies as well as attain the next level of innovation and market leadership. This partnership will help us bring our businesses in line with global industry benchmarks and increase our ability to develop future-ready products based on digital and other cutting-edge technologies.

Our stated ambition is to emerge as the most profitable tractor manufacturer in the country and towards realizing this vision we had activated Project Shikhar in 2014. Launched in alliance with a renowned global consultant, the project aims to institutionalise processes and practices for a lean and efficient operation led by benchmarked levels of material cost, design excellence, lean and quality supplier base and a sprightly supply chain. We are proud to report that within a short duration of the launch, we have already derived substantial gains, which will result in increasing shop-floor value creation, going forward. Such strategic alliances are consistent with our philosophy of creating value for our entire ecosystem, helping seamlessly integrate our dealers, customers and employees and fostering greater levels of association among them.

With a renewed focus on exports, we recently launched the futuristic Farmtrac Heritage line in South Africa in sync with our ambition of emerging as the leader in the sub-80 HP tractor category in the country. In another development, we also introduced two series of tractors in Bangladesh – the new Farmtrac 6060 Heritage Series in the 60 HP segment

positioned in the high-end premium category and the new Powertrac Diesel-Saver Plus 4455 Euro Series in the 55 HP range, covering the popular mid-size segment. Importantly, both these new launches set us up to grow our volumes significantly in the coming years on the back of our focus on the ‘right product–right region–right time’ philosophy.

With increasing urbanization, the government’s assertive focus on correcting the country’s infrastructural deficit is evident in the proposed establishment of smart cities and ambitious road projects. The sheer range of our construction equipment portfolio with market leadership in the pick-and-carry cranes segment gives us just the right products to match the imminent demand for backhoe loaders, safe cranes, pick-and-carry cranes and compactors, which will gain accelerated momentum as these projects start rolling out.

We are also very excited at the long-term prospects of our railways business, considering the concerted efforts undertaken by the Indian Railways towards modernization and capacity de-bottlenecking.

As a means to create a future-ready organization, we are also encouraging lateral intra-divisional movement among our people that will not only strengthen the sense of collaboration among our teams but also boost new ideas, helping crystallize and refine our go-to-market strategies.

At Escorts, we have been engaged in ‘Making India’ for well over six

decades, passionately and perceptibly transforming India’s agricultural and infrastructure sectors and helping enrich life quality.

It is now widely believed that India will emerge as the world’s fastest growing economy for the second consecutive year in 2016, an embodiment of legislative renewal leading to economic resurgence. The country presents tremendous opportunity on account of the convergence of sheer under-penetration in most sectors paired with a general increase in prosperity, bringing forth a renewed sense of capacity built-up both on the economic and resources front. This has augmented our capabilities to directly address of some of the major imbalances that impact our communities today including persistently low agricultural yields, outdated farm practices, infrastructural deficit and employment generation.

At Escorts, it is finding a solution to these challenges that drives us every single day. As one of India’s oldest engineering enterprises, we continue to remain deeply entrenched in its soil, devoted to realizing the potential of a country that is resurgent, forward-looking and truly committed to an inclusive growth philosophy.

We are renewing our pledge to serve the nation’s interests by leveraging our engineering prowess to address core building blocks of the nation – such as

‘food’ through our agriculture business; ‘infrastructure’ through our construction business; and ‘mobility’ through our auto and railway businesses. This we believe will strengthen the developmental foundations to catapult economic growth. We continue to remain deeply rooted in India’s soil with our relentless focus on farm mechanization. This pursuit is not only alleviating labor intensity but is also contributing to an agricultural resurgence that is at the core of food security as well as economic wellbeing. As a result, we are at the forefront of the country’s developmental foundations and for us, ‘Engineering the fundamentals of growth’ is not just a corporate catchphrase but the very reason for our existence.

Today, positioned as one of the country’s frontline engineering conglomerates, Escorts is embracing its next phase of growth, powered by national progress and pivoted by its philosophy of engineering the fundamentals of growth.

With a focus on positioning brand Escorts as a holistic engineering and technology play, we launched an inspiring corporate campaign that showcased our call to action to take India to its next orbit of growth through our comprehensive engagement in sectors that are core to the nation’s secular and sustainable growth.

The campaign was initiated with a high-energy television commercial that aimed to position Escorts as one of the leading engineering players in the country, which has been strengthening the foundation of agriculture and infrastructure through its technological excellence and innovation. The commercial was telecast on leading news networks and was followed up with splashing of billboards across six major airports – New Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Bhopal, Jaipur and Chandigarh. The campaign then moved on to the digital and social mediums, with a Facebook campaign on TVC Treasure Hunt and strategic online advertising. The campaign garnered one crore-plus impressions on various platforms and helped us touch our stakeholders in the right way.

Escorts’ employees, dealers, customers and investors have found a strong resonance with the campaign, which is helping reinforce the value of the Escorts brand as one that is single-mindedly focused on making in India and making India. n

Dealers’ Hall of Fame News & Events

Project Shikhar was launched in July 2014 to institutionalize best-in-class

systems and processes for a lean and efficient material function, leading to benchmark levels of material cost, lean and quality supplier base as well as an agile supply chain for optimum inventory.

The project has recently achieved a new milestone – by accruing substantial gains through implementation of cost saving ideas. The journey has been immensely challenging and rewarding at the same time, and the results have been extraordinary.

This value creation has been achieved by a cross-functional team, drawing from almost all Escorts Agri Machinery departments, leveraging a mix of strategic and operational excellence levers that are being embedded into the ‘Escorts Way of Sourcing and Design Excellence’. Few aspects that particularly stand out are:

• Purchasing excellence: Robust ‘clean sheet cost estimates’, validated with industry experts & benchmarked at best-in-class suppliers and tools like ‘E-Sourcing’ have been

Project Shikhar on a Strong Footinginstitutionalized successfully to optimize procurement of components. Supplier base is being pruned with rationalization of non-performing suppliers to improve our quality and cost position.

• Design and Value engineering leadership: The teams challenged existing design philosophies using ‘competitive benchmarking’ and a host of other global best practice levers ranging from ‘modularization to fundamental technology shifts’ and enabled us to become more cost-effective, while maintaining the highest quality standards that the customer expects of us.

• Operational excellence for our supply chain partners: Project Shikhar is touching and improving our supply partners as well. ‘Manufacturing process benchmarking’ with the best in the industry is being done to assess suppliers on a comprehensive range of performance and health metrics. This is being supplemented by targeted improvement initiatives at the supplier end to raise their level of operations and quality excellence for delivery to Escorts.

• Relentless execution focus: Committed, cross-functional implementation teams and effective governing mechanism has helped us capture these opportunities in an accelerated manner. Part development and validation timelines were optimised using several process innovation levers such as ‘rapid prototyping’, ‘idea level project management’ and ‘3D scanning inspection’.

As we move forward, we are broadening the scope to enhance organizational engagement and targeted capability building of various working team in Materials, Operations and KMC.

Coordinated team work across various EAM departments, close vendor coordination and rigorous focus on timelines have led to the success of Project Shikhar. This disciplined effort is already improving our financial performance, inspiring confidence in both internal and external stakeholders. n

Congratulations to the entire team of Project Shikhar!

Escorts Agri Machinery’s International Business division has launched the

revolutionary first ever Anti Lift Tractors in Bangladesh. Built around the twin themes of Driver Safety and Owner Savings, the new category of Anti-Lift Tractors (ALT), made especially for commercial haulage operators, are available in two models: ALT 4000 and ALT 3500. Tractors in general are usually vulnerable because of their front lift nature, resulting in reduced or no steering of front wheels. This endangers the safety of the driver and results in considerable damage which increases the maintenance cost for the owner. Escorts R&D has perfected an innovative technology through series of path breaking measures such as shifting the center of gravity and hitch

point forward, unique hub-reduction transmission, increased wheel base, heavy front axle, stiffener bars and plates, custom-designed 85kg front bumpers and high-intensity extra front lamps. These features considerably improve the front lift resistance capability of the tractor. This is further complimented with a series of additional attributes that provide ultimate savings for the tractor owner; such as certified fuel-efficient engine, haulage-special low-wear rear tyres, 4-coat high-life yellow paint, long life oil brakes, and 20% bigger fuel tank.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, Vice President-International Business, Escorts Agri Machinery, said, “We recently introduced our ALT tractors

in India with a resounding success. Today we seek to offer the same tried, tested and proven technological master piece, the new ALT series of tractors, to the Bangladesh market. These Anti Lift Tractors have been specifically designed for operators in Indian sub-continent for their specific needs. It is the first time that a tractor company has sought to lessen the risky driving conditions experienced by the haulage operators, particularly in mining, brick kilns and transportation. We are proud of being the first company in this part of the world that today is catering to operator safety in its own unique way without compromising on machine profitability. Anti-Lift Tractor brings freedom from drudgery and life threatening situations for the driver while offering never before value for money to the tractor owner.”
