YOUR PERSONAL TUTOR All full-time and some part-time learners have a Personal Tutor. Your tutor will welcome you to the College, help you to settle in and be there to give you help and information. Your tutor is usually your first point of contact with the College and your main source of help. You will meet your tutor every week, as part of a group session or for a one-to-one discussion and review of your progress. It is important that you attend your tutorials as they will support you and make sure you get the most out of College. You will meet your tutor at Induction. The Induction programme introduces you to staff, other learners, your course and the College. A more detailed description of the tutor’s role can be found in your handbook.

QUALIFICATION AIM Your main qualification aim is the BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering. This will be supported by Functional Skills in appropriate subjects. It should be stressed that this combination has been selected to give you a balanced engineering qualification and should not be regarded as separate, selectable subjects.

COURSE FRAMEWORK This course is designed to improve your career prospects and assist you to work in the field as engineering technicians or to enter Higher Education. The course will provide you with work related skills, an appreciation of future requirements and a broader knowledge and understanding of all aspects of engineering. The course aims are achieved through a range of subjects that will cater for specific vocational needs. This is not an easy course but is achievable by maintaining full attendance, keeping up with assignments and regularly checking your marks and grades by keeping a diary of the work required and due dates. In year one, terms one and two, you will study 6 units. Upon successful completion, in term 3 you will complete a further 3 Units. In Year 2 you will complete the final 8 Units to achieve an Edexcel BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering. The grading system of Pass, Merit and Distinction will generate points both towards your final grade and UCAS points for entry into Higher Education.

ASSESSMENT The assessment for your course can take various forms including assignments, phase tests, laboratory exercises and group presentations. The method of assessment will vary from module to module and will be explained in detail by the subject lecturer. Phase tests form a very important part in the assessment strategy in testing your ability to assimilate and understand the material content of the subject. You are required to gain a ‘pass’ in each principal objective. If you miss a phase test for any reason you will be awarded a ‘fail’ grade for that test. A form is available from the Faculty Administrator which will enable you to apply to the course team for your reset test to be considered as a ‘first-sit’ assessment. As mentioned under ‘ATTENDANCE’, you will need to fill in an absence request form for any planned absence, resit assessment can be permitted for failed sections but a ‘resit’ assessment can only gain a maximum of a pass grade. Assignments will be distributed by a subject lecturers with a required date for submission. This date MUST be regarded as the latest date for submission unless prior exemption is sought from the subject lecturer. Such exemption will only be granted in exceptional circumstances. The grading criteria for Pass, Merit and Distinction will be included with all assignments. Assignments and laboratory exercises will normally be returned to you within 15 working days of the cut-off date for submission. These are then yours to keep for revision but all assessed work is required to be submitted at the end of the year for external verification. If you should fail to submit any of this previously assessed work for verification it is likely that the moderator will NOT allow a pass in that subject. The final date for submission of all previously assessed course work for formal moderation is June 1. If any work is outstanding after this date you will be required to hand in assignments and/or complete phase tests prior to progression to Year 2.

Teaching Styles A mixture of Theory/Practical including labs, workshops and computer based packages which will include projects and competitions.

APPEALS An appeal by a learner may be made against a final course grade or at the end of the first year in the case of non-progression to the second year of a course. The minimum appeal that may be made is for a single unit of a course, all other issues are to be absorbed into an individual learner action plan. The appeals procedure is as follows:

You are to appeal in writing to the Curriculum Manager with support from your tutor

The Curriculum Manager will identify a remarker who is preferably skilled in the subject area and independent of past marking of the learner

You will be charged a remarking fee which will be refunded in the event of the unit being re-graded

The final decision will be made by the remarker, the Curriculum Manager and your tutor.

PLAGIARISM The use of other people’s work and the submission of it as though it was your own is known as plagiarism (plagiarism means theft of other people’s ideas). Any work forming part of an assignment, project, test or other assessment must be your own and must not contain any plagiarised material. Evidence of plagiarism will result in failure of the assessment. Any new assessment arrangement will be given with a strict completion date. You will also be subject to the College’s disciplinary proceedings. If you wish to quote material from a textbook or other source then this should be referenced in your assignment. Your subject lecturer or Personal Tutor will show you how to do this.
