Director’s Letter
I am pleased to share with you the 2007-2008 issue of the University of
Michigan Engineering Career Resource Center (ECRC) Annual Report. The
report contains information on the post-graduation activities of the Class of
2008 and hiring activity for the College of Engineering internship and
Cooperation Education Program.
This year in response to feedback from recruiting organizations, we were
able to accommodate more employers at peak periods during the 2008
recruiting season. The ECRC continued to enhance features of our online
recruiting system HireME, worked with the College to highlight and provide
better services to small companies and expanded our efforts to increase
international job opportunities for College of Engineering students.
The ECRC also provided a range of services to graduate and undergraduate
students of the College. Our goal is to assist students in gaining valuable
professional experiences that will help them make a successful transition for
school to career.
You are welcome to take advantage of the many services that we offer and
to get involved with College of Engineering students. We had a very active
recruiting season in 2007 and expect much of the same in 2008. We look
forward to another exciting year.
Sincerely,
Cynthia M. Redwine, PhD Director, Engineering Career Resource Center College of Engineering

The Engineering Career Resource Center
5
The Engineering Career Resource Center (ECRC) provides career planning
services to engineering and computer science undergraduates, graduate
students and College alumni. The Center coordinates career advising services,
career resource material, workshops, employer presentations, campus
interviews and online job postings. In addition to assisting students the cen-
ters’ staff works with recruiting organizations to facilitate full-time, internship
and cooperative education assignments. Thousands of campus interviews are
managed through the ECRC annually.
During the 2007-2008 recruiting season, the ECRC used HireME, our online
recruiting system to manage the thousands of job posting and campus
interviews conducted throughout the year.
In 2008, the Engineering Co-op and Internship Fair was formally changed to
the Engineering Winter Career Fair. The Winter fair has been jointly sponsored
by the ECRC and central campus Career Center since 2002. The name
change occurred as a result of feedback from employing organizations
indicating a strong need to fill full-time jobs as well as co-op and intern
positions during the Winter recruiting season. There was a significant
increase in the number of organizations participating in the fair. Seventy-
eight employing organizations joined in the 2007 event, while one-hundred
and nineteen participated in 2008.
Many employers partnered with the ECRC to offer career-related workshops
and Recruiter in Residence services for students throughout the year. The
Recruiter in Residence service allowed students to informally chat with
recruiters on various job search and career related issues. The most frequent
workshops offered included resume writing, interview preparation,
developing networking skills and negotiating job offers.

Cooperative Education Program at U-M Engineering is
an alternating co-op model. Students alternate between
a six to eight month work assignment and campus
coursework. An alternating co-op requires a minimum
of thirty work hours per week. While the majority of the
students in the program were juniors and seniors, all
undergraduate class levels were represented.
The Cooperative Education Program
6
U-M Engineering students continued to gain valuable experiences
through participation in engineering internships across the country.
The opportunities typically last three or four months, and are most
common during the summer. Student interns not only benefit from
the added experience and hands-on learning, they also benefit from
the exposure to various work environments. Employers benefit by
providing training opportunities, adding great new talent to their work
teams and by identifying qualified candidates prior to graduation..
