The School of Engineering and Built Environment

offers a comprehensive suite of programmes spanning Civil, Mechanical, Electronic and Environmental disciplines to Gaming, Cyber Security, Software and Computer Systems Engineering. We are especially proud of our industry links and we are fortunate to welcome a

large number of part-time students each year who bring a great deal of practical experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Our well-equipped facilities and high quality teaching staff ensure that students receive a stimulating practical and theoretical learning experience that is world class. Our academic staff work closely with industry delivering a range of specialist consultancy and commercial research, as well as Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The School also delivers professional bespoke training through our company ‘Academies’.

The School has a thriving and internationally recognised research culture which is fundamentally applied research, focussing on providing practical solutions for industry. The School also has a flourishing research student community with around 170 full-time and part-time PhD students as well as a number of research assistants and research fellows.

From the recent UK Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) assessment, which assesses the quality of the research being undertaken in UK Universities, GCU may now be considered as the leading post-1992 University for research in Scotland. In the REF2014 all units of assessment submitted by the School were recognised to have some elements of world leading research quality.

It is a great privilege to welcome you to Glasgow

Caledonian University and the Student Awards Event for the School of Engineering and Built Environment.

A globally networked University, GCU is committed to providing educational opportunity to talented students from a range of

backgrounds and delivering research with a practical benefit to society. Our student awards events are always a source of pride for staff and students alike and celebrate the efforts of each and every member of our University community including those who have excelled.

Central to the education we provide at the University is the support provided by Professional Bodies who accredit our courses and the input from our colleagues in business who help us co-create our curriculum ensuring our teaching is relevant in the modern day world and we are once again grateful for their considerable contributions throughout the year.

These contributions come in a variety of forms: the provision of numerous student prizes; valuable guidance on curriculum design; engagement in joint research; consultancy and knowledge transfer activities, and sometimes as a critical friend offering advice and support. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of the School who have once again shown great skill, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the year in guiding students to achieve their full potential. I do hope that you will enjoy celebrating the success of our students.

Centre for Built Environment Asset Management Award - First Year Built Environment Student AwardPresented by Jim Cochrane Founding Sponsor and Chair of Advisory Board

Asset management is the glue that enables evolving

civilisations to bind together to be better places within which to work, invest, live, learn and play. I am delighted to have supported the establishment of the Centre for Built Environment Asset Management at the University, a first in Scotland and I look forward to continuing involvement as it

grows into an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in this field.

Jim Cochrane, Charlesfort Properties Ltd, Chair BEAM Centre Advisory Board

The Centre for Built Environment Asset Management (BEAM) was established in 2014 through the generous sponsorship of Jim Cochrane. The Centre’s research focus is on maximising social, economic and environmental benefit through the effective development, use and revitalisation of the built environment and through engagement with the communities involved. Healthcare, social housing and infrastructure are sectors with high social impact and where the University has a track record of successful research and collaboration. The work of the Centre aligns with the key research themes that contribute to the University’s commitment to the ‘Common Good’. Initial BEAM Centre projects include the evaluation of health sector asset portfolios across Europe, asset database development to inform investment decision-making in the social housing sector and the health and environmental impacts of green infrastructure initiatives. Through to 2020 the Centre will expand its network of partners and sponsors to support a wider range of projects and the number of sectors that it is involved with. We would welcome discussion with individuals and organisations that are interested in the aims and the work of the Centre and who could contribute to its development.

Alumni Achievement Award -Awarded in recognition of his significant contribution to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service

Alex Clark, Deputy Chief Officer, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service BSc (Hons) Fire Risk Engineering 2001

Alex joined the then Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade,

as a firefighter in February 1987 at the age of 18. He served as a firefighter for 7 years at Sighthill fire station in Edinburgh, before progressing through the ranks. He realised that in order to fully develop his potential he needed to expand his horizons and pursue academic development.

This led him to the doors of Glasgow Caledonian University and enrolment on the BSc Fire Risk Engineering programme. Having successfully attained the BSc (Hons) in 2001, this provided an excellent springboard for further career development and he quickly progressed through several senior roles prior to becoming Acting Chief Fire Officer of Lothian and Borders in 2011, a post he held until the creation of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in 2013, where he was appointed Deputy Chief Officer.

“When I was notified that I had received this prestigious award, I was surprised and delighted in equal measure. Whilst I am the one receiving the award, for which I am extremely grateful, I have to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the University for creating the platform that enabled me to pursue my career goals.”
