School for the Environment, The LivingLabs: Nantucket

Major: Environmental, Earth & Ocean Science

60.8% of Nantucket is held in conservation by private, local, and federal organizations, all of which provide recreational opportunities with different environmental impacts. Active Recreation such as golf, often refers to higher impacts, whereas Passive Recreation such as birding represent lower impact. For this project I used four criteria to help design sustainable recreational activity on Nantucket: 1) Has minimum impact, 2) Allows for future use, 3) Provides opportunities for conservation, and 4) Incorporates educational and/or research aspects.

1. Create a new set of self-guided trail posts for the 11 kiosks along the University of Massachusetts Boston Field Station nature trail

2. Design various levels of information 3. Engage trail goers with educational and relevant

information including site specific tips 4. Design a project that can be expanded upon in

in order to provide dynamic information 5. Promote sustainable recreation on Nantucket

1. Meetings, interviews with local conservation organizations to learn about existing recreation

2. Review and Identify articles and media to linked through Quick Response (QR) codes

3. Work with local experts to create a set of trail posts relevant to the winter season
