    Today we are going to focus on College and Career Readiness, but before we begin I want to share with you some current information. First, the budget..

    I also want to share with you some current information about the Race to the Top:

    Forty states and the District of Columbia submitted applications for the Phase 1 grantsSixteen finalistsTwo states, Delaware and Tennessee, were selectedPhase 2 grant applications are due June 1, 2010

    Howard Countys allocation over a four year period is only $700,000. So clearly, this isnt about the money.

    We know that reform efforts are happening, with or without our support. And, I have always emphasized that I would prefer to participate and be part of the decision making. I feel the feedback we have provided to MSDE has been heard.Heres where we are:

In order to do that, we must take a LONG view--- a PreK-12 comprehensive approach to teaching and learning.

    I know that I can count on each and every one of you to lead this effort in your program, office, or school. So that ALL our students will be College and Career Ready.

    The United States Department of Education recently released the Blueprint for Reform, which sets out the current administrations plans for the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The Blueprint sets the goal of having every student, regardless of income, race, ethnic or language background, or disability status, graduate from high school ready for college and a career. In Howard Countys Class of 2009, 89% of our graduates went on to either a two or four year college. Another 2% went on to trade or technical school, 3% went directly into employment, and 2% went into the military. While these are commendable outcomes, we still strive to improve.

    LindaThis fall, Maryland convened a College Success Task Force to provide recommendations for what Maryland needs to do to increase the number of high school graduates who go on and successfully earn a college degree. The Task Force discussed at length what it means for a student to graduate from high school, college and career ready. One definition that was helpful to the Task Force came from materials developed by the American Youth Policy Forum.
