I. Introduction
Today, society develops more quickly than ever, so mass media becomes more important,
it proves its role as an undisputed part of life. Almost all of people use mass media to update
information, to research, or for learning and recreations, etc. Yourdictionary.com concluded
that: Mass media is the means of communication that reach and influence large number of
people, especially newspapers, popular magazines, radio and television. As being known,
mass media including television, radio, newspapers, magazines and Internet has numerous
kinds of role. I am going to be showing four important functions of mass media, which are to
provide information, entertainment, and lastly is to shape the peoples belief, opinion or even
behavior.
II. Discussion
Firstly, mass media helps you up-to-date the fastest information. Mass media can give
many kinds of information such as domestic, foreign news or warning news. For example,
mass media transmits the warning news namely weather forecast as fast as possible to form
peoples awareness and preventive methods. In addition, the viewers can catch wide range of
information regarding economic, political news of either domestic or foreign ones. In
contrast, many people point out that some means of mass media give them the incorrect
information or just not the core of the problems that they concern. For example, they might
feel they cannot believe the news coming from unreliable sources such as Internet or many
tabloids. Even though, some other means of mass media provide people exact information
that has been edited are televisions programs, well-known newspapers, or radio Because
mass media gives information, therefore, people feel connected with the world. For instance,
in 2010, the Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic. According to Wikipedia, As estimated,
three million people were affected by the quake. The Haitian government reported that anestimated 316,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made
homeless. Now, all means of mass media were helping the viewers in the world to know
about difficult situation of Haitian. Through mass media, the Haitian received such of
sympathies and supports such as money, foods or even clothes. It indicates that mass media
is the bridge connecting people around the World. However, people should also be aware
that the number of tabloid articles on Internet increases dramatically, but they could be
incorrect information. These articles typically have sensationalist headlines to call for

peoples curiousness. It will be a waste of time if you do not know which the best sources of
information to choose are.
Secondly, the most popular function of mass media is to entertain. On one hand, the use of
mass media is inevitably demanded since the development of technology has produced the
activities that outweighed others. Take example of people who go to work eight hours a day,
after coming home they usually like watching TV programs such as film, music programs at
night with their family rather than going out. Watching TV programs and chatting with
friends on internet are also common hobbies of the youth nowadays. Consequently, mass
media is regarded as to help people relax and reduce stress; hence, their work and study will
be processed more effectively afterwards. On the other hand, mass media does not only have
positive influences but also produces negative ones. Overusing mass media may negatively
affect peoples work or study. Recently, entertaining programs are created in very fascinating
and compelling ways with more visual effect and slice-of-life effect. This leads to the
emergence of television addict and internet addict appearing clearly in teenagers, who are
vulnerable and easily influenced. They find hard to control time spending on these program
as well as being appealed too much to stop, which results in less time spent on their study
and housework. Even more surprisingly, the survey in 2009 filling by 2029 adult ofHarris
Interactive claims that adult Internet users are now spending an average of 13 hours a weekonline also proves how much mass media dominates peoples life (Robin Wauters, Dec 23,
2009).
The last important function of mass media is shaping peoples belief, opinion and
behavior. Many people, especially parents commented overusing mass media will have
negative influences to young people, especially teenagers conception. As mentioned above,
teenagers are easier to be influenced and they now spend more time on using mass media.
Base on that, advertising and shows takes advantage of receiving taste and recent trend of the
youth in order to appeal them. They want to buy anything what they see on TV, internet,
magazines or some teenagers use computer to play game all day. However, there are many
programs give to young people positive. I am going to give you some example. I was
watching a variety show on KBS WORLD; the shows name is Invincible Youth. The variety
show that seven girls from seven K-POP idol girl groups. They are young people, averagely,
their age are from eighteen years old to thirty years old. They are very beautiful and talented.
Every day they have to go to school and must finish dense schedule. They joined the programand lived in a villages named Yoochiri. They started to do farming such as crops, raising

cattle and growing rice They spent almost of time to help the people who live in village
especially old people. They are very happy and friendly when they help the people and
working. They can make the farm products by themselves to earn money to help poor people.
After watching this program, many young people realize that they need to have more
responsibility with themselves, with their family, their country. Their parents can feel
gratification when their children watch this program. This program can help young people to
know that the life is not always easy; they need to hard labor to receive happy life. It is one
of many positive influences to young people. Therefore, mass media can shape the people
believes, opinion, behavior.
III. In conclusion
Many research showed that over 55 million newspapers are circulated each day, it is
estimated that radio reaches 77 percent of people over the age of 12 every day. Most
households also have two or more television sets, with a total viewing time of about seven
hours per day, indicate that mass media is indispensable with the people today. However,
according to the above shows beside of positive influences are negative influences, if the
people do not how to use mass media in truth ways, mass media will bring to people more
negative influences than positive influences.
