European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 -COUNTDOWNThe European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) 2018 will be launched this week atthe European Culture Forum in Milan. Over the last months, Europa Nostra and other heritagestakeholders have been very busy preparing for the European Year. As one of the

selected civil society organisations, Europa Nostra contributed to the secondmeeting of the ‘Stakeholders Committee’ and the joint meeting with nationalcoordinators held in September in Brussels. Further meetings will take place thisweek in Milano. We are proud that our Members can request the label of theEYCH 2018 from Europa Nostra for cross-border initiatives. One of the highlightsof the Year will be the European Cultural Heritage Summit taking place in Berlin on18-24 June. Co-hosted by Europa Nostra, its member organisation the PrussianCultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) and its partner the German Cultural HeritageCommittee (DNK), which is the national coordinator of the Year in Germany, theSummit will engage and mobilise a wide range of stakeholders to advocate for anambitious European Cultural Heritage Agenda. Inclusion of education andculture on EU Summit inGothenburg applaudedOn the eve of the EU Social Summit in Gothenburg on17 November, Europa Nostra’s Council issued astatement welcoming the initiative taken by the Presidentof the European Council Donald Tusk to convene alunch debate with EU leaders dedicated to Educationand Culture. Europa Nostra applauds such a strongpolitical signal displaying that Education and Culture canplay a larger role in promoting the much-neededstronger cohesion in Europe. Read more

WHC supports StructuredDialogue with Civil SocietyDuring its 41st session held in Krakow from 2-12 July,the World Heritage Committee welcomed a morestructured dialogue with civil society on World Heritagematters. Professor Jacek Purchla, who chaired theCommittee's session in Krakow, highlighted that theside-event co-organised by Europa Nostra on 5 Julyopened up the discussion on this key topic. During theParis session, the Committee members were called toinclude civil society dialogue in the agenda of theCommittee’s session in Bahrain in 2018. Read more

Our contribution to UN event onheritage & human rightsDuring a seminar organised by the Office of the UnitedNations High Commissioner for Human Rights inGeneva on 7 July, Europa Nostra demonstrated fullsupport to the UN leadership in promoting a humanrights approach to cultural heritage. The seminarfollowed a statement made to the Human Rights Councilin March 2016, which was joined by an unprecedentedcoalition of 145 States, with the view of condemningintentional destruction of cultural heritage. Best in Heritage showcases 42projects from across the worldDubrovnik hosted the Best in Heritage Conference from28-30 September. Some 140 professionals from 32countries discussed the world’s most influential museumand heritage projects. Seven winners of the EU Prize forCultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards shared theiroutstanding achievements. Heritage as a source ofinspiration and a driver of socioeconomic developmentwas at the centre of the speeches made during thewelcome ceremony. Read more

Helena Vaz da Silva Award forfilm director Wim WendersWim Wenders received the Helena Vaz da SilvaEuropean Award for Raising Public Awareness onCultural Heritage 2017 at a ceremony held on 24October at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. “Ourheritage in all its diversity is the true backbone for thefuture of Europe,” he stated in his impassioned speech.The Award was presented to Wenders by the Presidentof the Portuguese Republic. The Jury also gave aSpecial Recognition to Silvia Costa, Member of theEuropean Parliament from Italy. Read more
