Energy Flow

Digestive System:

1. We eat …2. Food is converted into Nutrients3. We poop …!

How is food changed into Nutrients?

Enzymes

Page 4: Energy & Waste Management

Energy Flow

Digestive System:• Enzymes:

• Proteins – speed up reactions • Enzyme binds to a Substrates

Attach to food & break it down

Energy FlowDigestive System:Nutrients:

Carbohydrates –> Potato• Breaks down to Sugars• Energy (ATP)

Proteins –> Fish & Meat• Breaks down to Amino Acids (building blocks)

• For building Muscles, Enzymes & Hormones

Lipids -> Chocolate• Break down Fats• For Energy & Vitamins

Circulatory System:

Functions:Transportation to cells

• Nutrients• Oxygen

Transportation away from cells• Waste• Water• Carbon dioxide

Defense• White Blood Cells – Killer cells

Big IDEA: Working Together …1. Food -> Nutrients (Digestive System) and picked up by the Blood.

2. Oxygen is picked up by Blood in the Lungs (Respiration System)

3. Blood (Circulatory System) transports Nutrients: Glucose & Oxygen to cells

• So Cells are able to produce ATP Energy in the Mitochondira

4. CO2, Nitrogen & Feces are released as Waste during the process of making Energy• Blood delivers CO2 to Lungs • Nitrogen waste & extra water is taken to the Kidneys to be released as Urine
