Australia’s Energy Policy
Australia’s Government energy policy hasestablished three primary objectives :-
• The provision of a efficient and reliable energy service
• Responsible development of natural resources and technology
• Reduce effects of global environmental impacts
![Page 5: Energy Study For Australia Ver 2](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022070315/5551cd2ab4c905922b8b4e38/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Australia’s Energy Policy
• Minimum Renewable Energy Target of 20% in 2020
• Emissions Trading in 2010
![Page 6: Energy Study For Australia Ver 2](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022070315/5551cd2ab4c905922b8b4e38/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Energy Efficiency in Australia
• Australia’s energy intensity decreases 1.1% annually
• Its performance lags other developed nations.
![Page 7: Energy Study For Australia Ver 2](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022070315/5551cd2ab4c905922b8b4e38/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Energy Efficiency in Australia
• Its energy intensity improvement for manufacturing sector is the lowest
![Page 8: Energy Study For Australia Ver 2](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022070315/5551cd2ab4c905922b8b4e38/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Energy Efficiency in AustraliaFor Residential and Commercial sectors :-
• Improve market signals and arrangement for demand side management (DSM)
• Have minimum standards for used appliances (MEPS)
• Providing information on energy performance of buildings
• Disclosing energy performance information in leases and sales agreements
• Australian Building Greenhouse Rating Scheme (ABGRS)
![Page 9: Energy Study For Australia Ver 2](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022070315/5551cd2ab4c905922b8b4e38/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Energy Efficiency in Australia
For Transport sector :-• National Average Fuel Consumption agreement for
car industry
• Reform of the fuel excise system• Travel Demand Management (TDM) programme
![Page 10: Energy Study For Australia Ver 2](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022070315/5551cd2ab4c905922b8b4e38/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Energy Efficiency in Australia
For Industrial sector :-
• Mandatory Energy Efficiency Opportunity Assessment ( for large energy users (>0.5 petajoules per annum)
• Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) expanded to include some industrial equipment
• Businesses with EPA licenses to report their energy usage patterns and strategies in usage reduction and management
![Page 11: Energy Study For Australia Ver 2](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022070315/5551cd2ab4c905922b8b4e38/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Energy Efficiency in Australia
• Promote actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions• Greater end-user participation through energy
reduction activities• Energy Efficiency Best Practice (EEBP) programme
![Page 12: Energy Study For Australia Ver 2](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022070315/5551cd2ab4c905922b8b4e38/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Conclusion and Recommendations
• Climate Change will be a big issue as global CO2 emissions will increase 43% by 2035
• Oil prices will increase in the future.
• Australia too dependent on oil, coal and gas which contributes the most CO2 although it has good energy security
• Domestic oil production will decrease more
![Page 13: Energy Study For Australia Ver 2](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022070315/5551cd2ab4c905922b8b4e38/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Conclusion and Recommendations• Stop building and de-commission existing coal-
fired power plants• Reduce 50% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2040• Promotion of energy efficiency and renewable
energy (extend/improve MRET)• Transit from high carbon economy to a
clean sustainable future– Clean Technology will also create new jobs– Sustainable development (less dependence on fossil fuels
