Applications of ESS
3
ESS is applicable to entire power system area starting from generation to end user and has multiple
benefits such as improving & stabilizing power quality, supporting renewables and off-grids.
Improving Generation efficiency
– Load leveling: Aiding generators by smoothing load fluctuation
– Peak Shaving: Decentering peak load
– Spinning reserve: Supplying seconds-scale reserve
– Frequency Regulation: Improving power quality
A Generation
Ancillary services
– T&D Deferral: Defer additional investments by reduce load
– Voltage Support: Responding sharp drop of voltage in a grid
B T&D
Controlling Renewable output
–Output smoothing: Smoothing irregular output power
– Constant power control: Controlling peak generation
C Renewables
Supporting Effective Power usage
– Time of Use response: Charge at off-peak, discharge at on-peak
– Power Quality & Reliability: Prevent blackout & voltage drop
– Energy Management: Power usage management and UPS
D End User
Supply power to the grid insufficient area through renewables integration –Power storing: Store produced electricity through renewable energy in the areas of power does not reach such as island and desert
E Off-grid

Ms. Park’s government support ESS deployment in many ways. Subsidy program, R&D support, and
Regulatory Reformation for electricity market and grid.
Remarks by President Park Geun-hye
“We will try new ways to
site incineration plants and
landfills, which local
communities tend to reject.
Those communities will
receive real benefits in the
form of clean technology-
based energy - energy that
will come from biomass co-
generation plants or
Energy Storage
Systems.”

Conclusion
▪ In Korea, Demonstration projects have been ongoing from 2009, and several ESS site have been
installed and operated. Commercial ESS PJT is under review by government and utilities.
▪ Technology is important for adopting ESS, but political factors, such as support program and
regulation reform and etc., is also important for driving ESS.
▪ Subsidy program, R&D support and regulation changing is conducted and under review for
driving ESS business by government in Korea.
▪ ESS is a key element for renewable energy policies of India by contributing grid stabilizing and
enhancing energy efficiency in renewable energy grid.
