    Global Warming.

The Environment Conservation is mostimportant for this 21 st century.

The depletion of natural resources ,andunregulated consumption of these for

Industrialisation has created what is calledThe Green House Gas effect on this planet!

The gasses like CO, CO2, CFCs are the GHGs.

GHG emission from India ~3 % of Global stock.

Estimates are by 2050 this will increase 3-4%

Our per capita GHG is 23 % of Global.

    4% of US, 12 % of EU.

In aggregate, India with 17 % of Worldspopulation has 4 % of global GHG emissions.

    The KYOTO Protocol

    1. Started with United Nations FrameworkConvention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

    2. In May 1992 in Newyork.

    3. KYOTO Protocol was adopted on 11 Dec. 1997.

    4. Entered into Force 16 February 2005.

    The KYOTO Protocol

It set binding targets for 37 Industrializedcountries & European Community forreducing GHG emissions.

It set avg. 5 % reduction of 1990 levels over ta five year period- 2008-2012.

India as a developing country, has to regulatethe levels over the years to come.

It created a market driven trade in carbon

    The KYOTO Protocol

    i) A demand for Emission reduction amongstcountries thro Legal Emission targets.

ii) Stimulating supply of Clean technology.

iii)Enabling Trading of Emissions by certifiedEmission reduction(CER)

    The KYOTO Protocol

The Legal Binding Enforcement on Emissionreduction:

    a) CDM for investments in developing countries of Cleantechnologies for GHG reduction.

-It has to be measurable, reportable & verifiable .

-Is quantified as CER by UNFCCC.

    b) Joint implementation for trade of emissions at Projectlevel between industries.

c)Emission trading for trade of emissions or allowancesat country level. 1 ton of CO2 = 1 Unit CER.

    The KYOTO Protocol

    CDM-Clean development Mechanism (Article 12)

A country with E-reduction target is allowedto implement an Emission -reduction projectin a developing country . Eg.

i)Rural electrification using Solar panels.ii) Installation or more energy efficient Boilers

    Can earn Saleable CER credits.

    The KYOTO Protocol

Operational from 2006 CDM has over 1000registered.

Anticipate CERs amounting to 2.7 billiontons of CO2 during 2008-2012.

    Joint Implementation - (Article 6)

A country with E-reduction target is allowedto earn Emission -reduction units (ERU) fromanother party Eqt.of 1 ton of CO2 at a price.

    The Indian Scenario Opportunities.

The current trading in carbon Credits is < 10%.

    - Of the 285 EE projects,90% are in Heavy Industries.

    - DSM to become more active in Municipal & HouseholdBuildings SMEs for reducing Consumption.

    - Though represents largest number of CDM projects, many are small. It represents 12% CDM revenue asagainst 60% for China.
