Intermittent extract &

background ventilators

• Classic method of ventilation

• Local extract fans are installed for rapid extraction purpose

• Suitable to be used in houses, flats and apartments

• Difficult to apply to single dwelling with single facade

Page 26: Energy efficient ventilation system

Benefits of Intermittent extract & background ventilators

• Provide rapid extraction of moisture

• Fans can be mounted in window, ceiling or external wall

• Can operate either occupant or automatic control

Page 27: Energy efficient ventilation system

Possible problem

•High running cost

•Noise potential if it is poorly installed

•Might require additional background ventilators fitted at low level

Whole House Ventilation with

Heat Recovery (MVHR)

• Comprises a Heat Recovery Unit and a network of ducting

• Located in the loft space of a house / utility room in an apartment

• Works by using both supply and extract ventilation

• Proven as a low energy & highly efficient way of ventilating

Page 29: Energy efficient ventilation system

Concept/ Application of MVHR system

• It works by continuously extracting air from the wet rooms

• At the same time, drawing in fresh supply air from outside

• Warm, extracted air is passed through the heat exchanger before being ducted outside to the atmosphere

• Fresh, filtered & tempered air is then supplied into living rooms, dining areas & bedrooms

Page 30: Energy efficient ventilation system

Benefits of MVHR system

•Year round removal of condensation and indoor

pollutants

•Helping reduce carbon footprint of the property

•Fresh, filtered air supplied to dwelling, ideal for allergy

sufferers

•Saves energy costs

•Very low noise levels

•Compact, light weight and easy to install

•Fits into nearly any wall depth and orientation

Page 31: Energy efficient ventilation system

Possible problems to MHVR system

• In cold climates, very cold air brought into a heat recovery system can cause frost formation in heat exchanger.

• Due to frost build up reduces ventilation effectiveness and can damage the heat exchanger, heat-recovery systems must have devices to deal with frost.

Case Study - One City Sky Park

• Located in USJ 25

• Designed to be both contemporary and sustainably environment friendly

• Since the completion of One City Sky Park, the development has received

the Green Building Index Provision Silver certificate. A key green feature is

its use of natural light to lit the interiors of Sky Park

Passive Design Features

1. Vertical green wall that cover the wind channels

• Hanging greenery such as vines or

creepers with Stainless Steel Wire

Trellis System

• Protect exterior finishes and masonry

from UV radiation and rain

• Increase the seal or air tightness of

doors, windows, and cladding by

decreasing the effect of wind pressure

• Lower the air temperature around

intake valves

Page 43: Energy efficient ventilation system

2. Water Features

•Provide a peaceful backdrop to

occupants

•Purifying and humidifying the air

around

•Generate beneficial negative

ions into the environment

Page 44: Energy efficient ventilation system

3. Wind Channels

• Daylighting

• Allow cross ventilation

and stack effect

ventilation

Page 45: Energy efficient ventilation system

4. Glass panel walk path as means of natural lighting

• Made up of double layer heavy duty tempered glass

• Prevent the heat from entering the space

• Allow sufficient daylight
