energy efficiency – petrus naude – oneworld
DESCRIPTION
Presentation by Petrus Naude of OneWorld at the CHOICES project community energy workshops in Somerset East, Pearston and Cookhouse communities, Blue Crane Route Municipality in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, held in February and March 2013. The presentation covers issues of energy efficiency as they relate to South Africa’s communities. ENERGY EFFICIENCY
What is Energy Efficiency?
• Energy efficiency is "using less energy to
provide the same service“
- http://eetd.lbl.gov/ee/ee-1.html
• Something is more energy efficient if it
delivers more services for the same energy
input, or the same services for less energy
input – IEA: tp://www.iea.org/glossary/glossary_E.asp
What is Energy Efficiency – Steps?
Step 2 - Efficient
appliances
Step 3 -Switching to more efficient
fuel e.g. electricity to gas
Step 1 -Change behavior

Step 1 - No Cost Options for saving
energy
• Turn geyser temperature down to 60o Celsius
• Use less hot water – water heater biggest user
• Switch off equipment when not in use
• Reduce excessive heating or cooling in house
• Only include the amount of water needed when heating water in
a Kettle
• Physically turn off appliance switches or at the wall (e.g. a TV or
Hi-Fi), instead of leaving them on stand-by
• Make one-pot meals and keep lids on pots and /or bring foods to
the boil quickly on the “high” setting, then turn the heat down to
“simmer” to finish cooking
• Thick frost on chilling panels reduces a fridge and freezer’s
cooling ability
Step 2 – Install Low Cost Options
1. Install efficient lighting - CFL (R30 to R40)
Save 70% of lighting cost and 10 times longer
2. Install an efficient shower head (R150 – R250) Save 30 to 40% of water heating cost Save water
3. Insulate the geyser (R200 – R300) Save 20 to 25% water heating cost

Background What is it:
• The Wonderbag is a non-electric, heat-retention cooker that allows food that has been brought to a boil on a stove or fire, to continue cooking for hours after it has been removed from the direct fuel source.
How does it work:
• The Wonderbag’s heat retention properties the retains the heat to allow the food to continue cooking without the use of additional cooking fuel.
• Each Wonderbag comes with a recipe book containing instructions.
• Bring your food to the boil, place in the bag, leave for the recommended time open to serve.
Improved cook stoves - Efficient and clean burning
cooking
Traditional Cooking
Traditional energy source and use – Not efficient
Improved cook stoves - Efficient and clean burning cooking
Key features compared to an open fire: uses at least 50% less wood/charcoal, cooks 2-4 times quicker, produces 70% less smoke 50% less greenhouse gases
Example – “EcoZoomStove”
Marketed by Restio Energy SA
Low Cost Efficient Stoves cost: R150 to R300
Environmental friendly briquettes & cook
stoves – from biomass sources
More Clean energy efficient burning using briquettes
Making briquettes using biomass waste from area – in community
Invest to Save Options
1. Install a solar water heater
2. In stall ceiling
3. Insulate the ceiling/ roof
