The national cost of physical inactivity now stands at £20 billion per year. Although this is comparable to many of the great public health challenges facing the UK today, including smoking, alcohol harm and poor diet, physical inactivity is the last of these factors to receive a long-term, dedicated, resource-backed strategy. ukactive's Blueprint for an Active Britain calls for a single-minded focusing of resources, energy and policy to turn the tide of physical inactivity. It is one of the UK's greatest-ever social challenges. At its heart, the ukactive Blueprint lays the foundations for a stakeholder-supported government-led review of how and where physical activity can play a part in improving the nation's well-being, with practical policy recommendations across a range of areas. It reveals fresh data citing that 57 per cent of MPs believe physical inactivity is one of the top two health issues facing the UK right now and that 79 per cent of MPs feel that physical inactivity should be a higher priority for government. For the first time, this document brings together the highest profile voices to address core themes in physical activity promotion, and sets out an ambitious forward course for policy development at this critical juncture. Online tool boosted by new activity data

The Active People Interactive tool has been expanded to provide new measures, extra statistics and invaluable health and activity data. The online tool was originally launched in autumn 2013, and allows users to analyse yearly Active People Survey results. It’s particularly useful when interrogating data for different areas within England, and for different population groups. The refreshed tool now offers: • The ability to examine data in the context of public health measures of

inactivity and the Chief Medical Officer guidelines of ‘150 minutes a week’ of activity

• Previously unpublished data linked to the measures in the Public Health Outcomes Framework

• Data on physical activity as well as sport – including walking, cycling, dance and gardening

• The ability to interrogate new measures such as Body Mass Index and moderate or vigorous activity.

See what’s changed - Try out the improved tool here. Source of information There isn’t currently data available for the Local Authority Areas of Shropshire or Telford and Wrekin, only when these are combined. We’ll provide an update when more information is available.

New Sport England Campaign #BackingTheBest Research carried out by the charity SportsAid shows athletes and their families are paying, on average, £6,200 a year to fund their child's sporting ambitions. Sport England have launched Backing The Best to support the faimilies of the next Bradley Wiggins, Jessica Ennis-Hill or Ellie Simmonds. The scheme will commit £5.5 million of National Lottery funding over the next four years. While Backing the Best is looking to open up opportunities for talented young athletes, the scheme isn't open to everyone – only young, exceptionally talented athletes in the early stages of their careers and who face the greatest financial challenges will qualify. SportsAid will be working with coaches and national governing bodies of sport to identify the athletes for whom an award could make a big difference. Annual awards of up to £5,000 will be made on a case-by-case basis, specifically contributing to essential costs such as travel, accommodation, kit and support by coaches and physios. To find out more and get in involved, an athlete should speak to their coach and/or national governing body. NGBs are able to make nominations to SportsAid in November. http://www.sportengland.org/backingthebest

It is recommended by Sport England, both as champions of sport but also as statutory planning consultees in respect of outdoor sports facilities and playing fields, that all local authorities should have an up to date and robust Playing Pitch Strategy (PPS) to ensure there is a sufficient supply of quality playing pitches to meet the sporting needs of local communities now and in the future. A new draft Playing Pitch Strategy (2015 - 2026) for the borough has been produced using the latest Sport England methodology. The strategy analyses current and future supply and demand for grass and artificial pitches for five key sports: - Football - Rugby - Union Rugby League – Cricket- Hockey The draft PPS will set a framework within which the Council, its partners, stakeholders, sports clubs and the community can work together to make improvements to playing pitches in the Borough. The overall aims of the draft strategy are to protect and enhance levels of outdoor sports facilities, address issues of quality and management, maximise the number of outdoor facilities in Telford and Wrekin and increase investment. The draft PPS consultation which takes place from 25 October - 30 November 2015 aims to get views from stakeholders, local clubs and the community. Click here for more information

This is the latest blog from Big Lottery You want to set up a project that will improve the lives of your local community and you think a grant from the Big Lottery Fund could help you to do it. To be eligible to apply for money from us, our very first requirement is that you are a UK-based organisation with a bank account in the name of the organisation. You need to be a not-for-profit organisation but you do not need to be a registered charity to fill in a Big Lottery Fund application. To apply to us you will need: •A governing document, such as a constitution This document must set out the name and purpose of your organisation. It should also cover how it will work, including how people can join; how your committee will operate and when you will have meetings •A committee or board with at least three members who are not related to each other or living at the same address. •A bank account in your organisation’s name (as written on the constitution)At least two of the unrelated committee members are required to approve the withdrawal or spending of money from the account.

•Annual financial accounts These should clearly state the name of your organisation (again, as on the constitution). They also must show the start and end dates for the 12-month period they cover (for example ,1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016). They don’t need to be produced by a professional, or audited by accountants, but they will need to be signed as accurate by at least two members of your committee. If your organisation is still in its first 12 months, we may ask for a projection instead, listing any expected spending or income (including any funding you are applying for) over the next year. I am not sure how to set up an organisation. Where can I get help? Getting your organisation set up can be tricky, but the good news is there is a wealth of information to help you navigate the journey. A great place to start is the KnowHow NonProfit Set up a charity page or the Gov.UK Set up a charity page. They provide a step-by-step guide on setting up a new group or organisation, and some useful additional support. Energize’s latest Conference; Funding Roadshow, next Tuesday 17th November features a workshop ‘Are you funding ready’ to help make sure your organisation has everything in place to ensure you give yourself the best possible chance of being successful. Have you thought about community shares? Community shares are a growing area of social investment. Hundreds of community enterprises across the UK, from football clubs to heritage buildings have already raised millions of pounds of investment from community shares. Community shares can raise significant funds to get community projects off the ground by offering your community a chance to own shares in your organisation. Each person who buys shares gets a vote in how your organisation is run. Community ownership means you gain dedicated investors and advocates who want the project to succeed. http://communityshares.org.uk/ Microgenius Microgenius is a website you can use to make your community share offer much easier. Share offers can be a lot of work, with Microgenius you can collect money and your new members’ details securely and electronically instead of via lots of paperwork. Microgenius is run by the Community Shares Unit, a programme delivered by Co-operatives UK and Locality, who also work with a number of organisations to help spread the word about community shares. By being a national website we also are able to attract attention in a way smaller organisations might not, helping people to find you. http://www.microgenius.org.uk/pg/how-it-works-4
