From March 20 -21, we.CONECT invited an international audience of more than 120 executives , 25+ pioneering speakers and partners to the annual ener.CON Europe congress in Berlin. On 2 days, professionals were set to exchange insights, best practices and clear project concepts on energy efficiency. Various industry challenges and trends were discussed. High-level know-how, combined with top experiences from leading international companies on optimization and integration of energy efficient systems made the ener.CON Europe 2014 a melting pot of energy innovation and forward thinking. Over 120 attendees used the conference to actively discuss contemporary challenges, ideas and progresses with regard to energy efficiency strategy, tools & solutions, implementation and total pland asset management. Unique sessions offered an interactive platform for networking
beyond industry level and development of practical solutions and tactics.

The annual ener.CON 2014 Award ceremony took place on the evening of the
first conference day. The European prize is given for unique energy-efficient
projects and innovations in the asset intensive industry. An independent jury
has chosen the best ener.CON EUROPE project out of 15 submissions.

CASE STUDY Steven Driver, Genzyme
Steven Driver lectured the audience with his Case Study “Understanding Sustainable Building
Commissioning and Interrelationship with Energy and Carbon Savings”. Topics as research and
development of a sustainable concept,
commissioning process, interactive energy management and portfolio management of costs
and carbon opportunities, were discussed.
CASE STUDY Michael Becker, Pfizer Inc.
Michael Pfizer spoke to the audience about Wood
Pellets as an real alternative to support a
pharmaceutical production process, by referring to
examples from the implementation of the Freiburg
Pellet Boiler in 2009, value engineering, design
principles and a look at the future of wood chips
fuels.
CASE STUDY · Steve Coppinger, CalPortland
Steve Coppinger presented the Case Study “Sustaining
Excellence in a Corporate Energy Management Program”.
Hereby he focused on the themes: elements of
CalPortland’s corporate energy management program
based on ENERGY STAR guidelines, how CalPortland
adopted an aggressive renewable energy program at one
of its cement plants and highlights of a recent process
energy efficiency project that saved the company millions of
US dollars and high production and low production – how to
manage energy in volatile business environment.

CASE STUDY · Mihkel Laks, Volvo Car
Mihkel Laks analyzed the topic “Monitoring and Measuring
Energy Efficiency – Indicators of Energy Efficiency
Performance.” and gave insights on how to extract and
classify the right metrics to analyze consumption, how to
maintain good performance, how to transfer results into a
reporting system that addresses budgetary concerns and
finally, remaining challenges. He concluded with lessons
learned from the monitoring system introduction project.
TECHNOLOGY TRACK
Rainer Nobis, HeidelbergCement Rainer Nobis engaged the delegates at his
Technology Track – Case Study into the topic: “Energy Saving Potentials and Implementation of New Technologies to Reduced Energy
Consumption in the Cement Industry”. He gave insights into energy costs within the cement industry, trends, potentials for fuel and electricity
reduction and economic aspects in applying new technologies.
