Why We Exist

One in four heart transplants will fail

largely due to organ rejection

Anti-rejection drugs and rejection-detection

procedures negatively affect their quality of life.

On average, a heart transplant only lasts

about 12 years.

We are the only nonprofit organization dedicated to funding the critical yet often overlooked research needed to eliminate rejection, prevent

life-threatening complications and reduce the risk that a second transplant will be needed.

participating transplant centers.

2018 was a year of milestones for Enduring Hearts. Working together, our tireless staff, committed board, and generous donors made aggressive advances in our mission to increase the longevity of pediatric heart transplants and improve the quality of life for transplant recipients.

For our 5th full year of operation, we posted record fundraising dollars, which resulted in increased levels of research grants and funding commitments to the international community of scientists dedicated to helping fulfill our vision.

We cemented and even grew existing grant-making alignments with our research partners at the American Heart Association, and at the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. We forged new relationships, pulling together existing and complementary organizations like the Pediatric Heart Transplant Society, to maximize our combined impact on the communities of children living with heart transplant-related challenges.

All the positive momentum we’ve built to date comes with costs. Our program budget to meet our funding commitments is growing at a very rapid rate, with the expectation that our research programs outlay in 2021 will reach $2,200,000! Contrast that to our FY2018 grant making of over $640,000, and the growth trajectory is clear - we need innovative and sustainable fundraising strategies to bolster this continued growth. We are implementing a more geographically diverse fundraising strategy in the coming years, and seeking our existing donors’ support in activating their networks to support Enduring Hearts.

We know that we can achieve our vision for a world where every child’s heart lasts a lifetime, but this journey is not without challenges. We can overcome them together.

Are you with us?

Will you be a heart hero?

Our StoryA message from Patrick and Madelyn Gahan, parents of Mya and founders of Enduring HeartsWhen most people hear your child needs a heart transplant, they say something like, “Are you OK? I can’t even imagine what you’re going through.” And they’re right. They can’t.

We don’t have to imagine. We created Enduring Hearts in 2013 after our 3-year-old daughter Mya received her life-saving heart transplant. We remember the days spent waiting for a donor heart, the bittersweet joy of finding a match, the whirlwind of surgery, and the uncertain recovery. They were the most challenging moments of our lives, but we made it through. We’re on the other side, and Mya is thriving.

Of course, there are still challenges. But we believe you can overcome those same challenges – and that you and your child can make it through, too. We know every fiber of your body hurts, and we can’t take that away. But we can be here to listen, to lean on and to do what your well-meaning friends and family members can’t do, because they haven’t been in your shoes. Let us shoulder some of your pain by going on this journey with you. We’re in this together.
