ENDURANCE SPORT MEDICINE COURSE

This course is intended for physicians specializing in sports medicine as well as physiotherapists, athletic therapists, nurses and other health care professionals with an interest in endurance medicine and active patients.

The Course will provide both hands-on workshop sessions and didactic lectures to provide the learner with the clinical expertise to manage the medical needs of

endurance athletes.

Objectives

At the end of the workshop, the learner will be able to:

Identify effective interventions to prevent, treat and rehabilitate common injuries

from swimming, biking and running in endurance athletes.

Prepare medical coverage for an endurance event and

common medical illnesses that occur in a triathlon

Gain hands on experience in assessment of bike set up and

The 2014 IRONMAN 70.3 Muskoka will be the 7th edition of the event. The 1.2-mile, one-loop swim will take place in picturesque Peninsula Lake. The 56-mile bike course circles Lake of Bays, riding through small towns

such as Dwight, Dorset, and Baysville. The 13.1-mile run will take you through Muskoka County, past pink granite rock and cascading waterfalls.

IRONMAN 70.3 Muskoka is also a Regional IRONMAN TriClub Championship race. In addition to club “members only” special on site events, athletes who are a members of a TriClub or Team, earn bonus points

Dr. Bruce Davidson is an Emergency Physician in Kamloops, B.C.. He is actively involvement in the development of ed-ucational programs at CASEM, including CASEM’s Team Phy-sician Development Course, the Advanced Sport Medicine Course and Co-Chair of the 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting in Kelowna. He has participated in and led many health care teams including: Chief Medical Officer for the Para-PAN AM Games, Core Team Physician for the Commonwealth Games, Melbourne, Paralympics in Beijing and most recently as a core member for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Dr. Marshall is an orthopedic surgeon who works in Ottawa specializing in arthroscopic and sports medicine. He has worked for the Department of National Defence for almost 25 years, 15 years in uniform having tours in the Persian Gulf and in Bosnia. He is heavily involved in education, including teaching medical students and orthopedic residents as well as educating peers in the CASEM basic team physician course, advanced sport medicine courses and numerous meetings and workshops. His sport involvement has ranged from covering football, hockey and basketball at the university levels to being part of the medical teams at Canada Winter and Summer Games, PAN AM games, Commonwealth games and most recently as Assistant Chief Medical Officer for the 2012 London Olympics Games.

Dr Rich Trenholm has held active practices in Family, Obstetrics, and Sport and Exercise Medicine in Huntsville, ON since 2003. He is an avid triathlete, and has travelled around the world competing in many endurance events. Locally, Dr Trenholm is a certified triathlon coach and President of the local endurance sport tourism organization, TriMuskoka, which is a not-for-profit organization that works hard to promote Muskoka as a sport tourism training and racing mecca for all those that push themselves in hopes of becoming better, stronger, and faster. The organization also works to engage local community residents to take up the challenge to become active, and to help install local infrastructure to promote a safe environment for everyone to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle.

Dr Richard Goudie is a resident of Barrie where he divides his work between the Emergency department, Barrie Sport Medicine clinic and a chronic pain clinic. With over 20 years of sports medicine experience, he is well equipped to guide the many fitness enthusiasts, recreational and elite competitors back to sport after in-juries and various training difficulties. He has been part of multiple Health Care teams accompanying Team Canada to major games including the Olympics, Pan Am and Commonwealth Games. He was Chief Medial Officer for Team Canada at the Beijing and London Paralympic Games.

Ryan Grant, Certified Pedorthist Ryan Grant is a Certified Pedorthist and co-owner of SoleFit Inc. in Ottawa, Ontario

and is a firm believer in finding the root cause of a problem rather than trying to bandage the issues that it results in. Ryan is a former competitive runner (sub 30min 10k run-ner) and spent a year training full-time at the Australian In-stitute of Sport. He then went on to compete in Adventure racing, racing multiple week long races around the globe. After setting up his business with his sister, Ryan

turned to triathlon and competed as a professional for 4 years placing top 10 in multiple 70.3 races (runner up at Tremblant 70.3 in 2012). His passion is helping active individuals return to sport and he travelled to Ethiopia in the winter of 2013 to lend his services at a high altitude training camp for elite runners. Recently, Ryan completed an unsupported 100km run across Baffin Island as a part of a filmed documentary with Ray Zahab.

Dr. Douglas Stoddard, MD, M Sport Med, Dip Sport Med, ES Douglas Stoddard is a sports medicine physician and is the medical director of the Sports & Exercise Medicine Institute (SEMI). After receiving his medical degree from the University of Toronto, he trained in Australia at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, obtaining his Master Degree in Sports Medi-cine. He is also a diplomat of the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine. Also, Douglas, along with his wife, Sha-

ron, are the co-founders e load Sport Nutrition, which designs and manufactures nutritional products for endurance athletes. He is a father of two boys and an avid triathlete.
