INTRODUCTION
““Living systems are organized in such a way that they form multi-leveled structures, each level consisting of subsytems which are wholes in regard to their parts, and parts with respect to the larger wholes ”--Fritjof Capra, The turning point: science, society and the rising culture, p. 43

Systems Theory“Systems theory looks at the world in terms of the interrelatedness and interdependence of all phenomenon, and in this framework an integrated whole whose properties cannot be reduced to those of its parts is called a system.” Fritjof Capra, The turning point: science, society and the rising culture, p. 43

Endobiogeny: A theory of terrain
• Terrain: functional expression of structural constitution in its internal equilibrium– Constitution: Genetic heritage, potential capacity
of the structure– Structure: materialized constitutive elements that
assure life. The achievement of constitution– Function: all the biologic and metabolic mechanics
that assure functioning of structure and dynamics of the organism

Manager of the System
• In order to ensure the integrity of the system, the manager must possess 3 qualities: 1) Ubiquity of interaction with each structural
element2) Constancy of relationship with those elements3) Auto-regulation.
• The Endocrine system is the manager of the terrain and the system most worthy of study

THE BIOLOGY OF FUNCTIONS
"The new mathematics...is one of relationships and patterns. It is qualitative rather than quantitative and thus embodies the shift of emphasis that is characteristic of systems thinking—from objects to relationships, from quantity to quality, from substance to pattern." Fritjof Capra

Need to use blood-based biomarkers
Advantages• Objective• Quantitative• Accurate• Reproducible• Minimally invasive
Short-comings• Binary• Reductionist• Confusion of
– Cause vs. Effect– Cause vs. Effect vs.
Mechanism

Wisdom of using blood
Blood and Physiology• The life of the flesh is in the
blood (Lev. 17:10)• The blood is the life (Deut
12:23)
Blood, Thought and Emotions• And indeed We have
created man, and We know whatever thoughts his inner self develops, and We are closer to him than (his) jugular vein. (50:16)

CASE STUDIES IN PINEAL PHYSIOLOGY
ASEMIP
Pineal physiology:Seasonal entrainment
• Seasonal entrainment– Shorter duration of light, greater production of
melatonin– Pineal adapts adrenal gland to increase activity
during the winter months– Pineal adapts thyroid in similar fashion
• Cosmobiology: evaluates the effects of cosmologic events such as solar flares and lunar cycles on human physiology
ASEMIP
Pineal Physiology:Other
• Nocturnal– Anti-oxidant: most powerful endogenous– Anti-inflammatory, free radical scavenger– Anti-tumoral– Reorganizes cerebral connections
• Diurnal– Protects skin against UV damage– Stimulates pancreatic enzymes– Gastric motility– Adrenal adaptability– Thyroid adaptability

Indices relevant to Pineal function
• Corticotropic– ACTH index– Corisol index– Adrenal cortex index
• Thyrotropic– Thyroid metabolic index– Thyroid yield– TRH/TSH index
• Somatotropic– Prolactin index– Peripheral Serotonin
• Pineal Gland– Adaptogen index: relative
level of participation of pineal gland in adaptation
– βMSH/αMSH: Relative level of participation of pineal vs. pituitary in adaptation
ASEMIP
Case 1: Insufficient pineal adaptation10 year old boy hearing voices, death wish
• 10 yo boy with anxiety, death wish from voices in head• H/O: Severe atopy: food allergies, environmental
allergies, asthma, arrested growth, < 5% for weight• Symptoms
– ANXIETY: mood swings, sad, but cannot express exactly what makes him feel that way; stated he wanted to kill himself due to feeling overwhelmed from hearing voices. Claims to have had visions since 2 years of age, telepathy, empathic
– Asthma: daily use with constant dyspnea– Fatigue: chronic, cannot play at recess, tired in school
ASEMIP
Case 1: Insufficient Pineal adaptation
• Treatment:– Mind blend: California poppy, Annual Mercury, Cassis buds,
Lithy tree buds, DOSE: 2.5 ml tid • 48 hours: Voices and death wish resolved
– Treatment for asthma started 2 weeks later after biology of functions performed
• 3 months: full energy, need for daily asthma inhaler resolved—went 6 months before requiring again
• 12 months: Happy, healthy boy, gaining weight (6 lbs), growing in height (5.5’’), expanding list of tolerable foods, mild asthma with colds

Case Study 2: Excessive Pineal activity Cyclic Dysthymia
• Chief Complaints: Hormonal and mood fluctuations• Symptoms
– EMOTIONS: Phases last for months at a time: • Depressed, chornic fatigue easily irritated, brain fog • Suddenly improves during ovulation
– 15: ADRENAL FATIGUE with late onset of puberty – 18-26: Anxiety attacks after caffeine or chocolate– 34: nearly died from traumatic birth with severe hemorrhaging became
hypersensitive to noise; – 36: 8th month of pregnancy: insomnia, anemia (Hg 10), anxiety, panic
attacks--started on Armor thyroid which worsened her situation; Child born with trisomy 21
– SLEEP: Variable: Cannot shut off mind when tries to sleep, hard to fall asleep; Dreams: Vivid, engaging, but not fatiguing

Case Study 2 (cont): Pineal Over-adaptation
• Based on history, physical exam and biology of functions, started on following treatment
• #1: Nervous tension: California poppy, Salad burnett, Yarrow, White deadnettle, Artichoke leaf, 2.5 ml BID
• #2: Mood swings: Strawberry leaf, Gypsywort, Arnica, Buggleweed, Pichi, 2.5 ml bid
• Magnesium oligoelement: 20 drops qAM• 6 weeks: reduction in amplitude of swings• 7 months: increased functionality and delayed onset
