Ender and Odysseus By: Sol

Thesis

In order to get to a place you value you have to go through numerous battles to reach it. It took Odysseus 20 years to get back to Ithaca. It took Ender 6 Years to be able to see his sister Valentine.

Introduction: The call

The mentors

Odysseus’ mentors were Athena and Circe. Athene helped him in his journey by acknowledging her father Zeus of his difficulty returning home. Circe guided him through some of the troubles he was going to have to face, he also spent a year with her on her island.

Enders mentors were Colonel Graff, Mazer Rackham, his older sister Valentine, and his other loyal friends, together they both learned new techniques that they could use out in the battlefield.

Tests

Odysseus went through numerous tests, including fighting the Cyclopes, getting away from Circe without her turning him into a pig, fighting the sirens, and other battles.

Ender went through a lot of battles as well. Ender had to fight 3 times against kids at the battle school unwillingly killing two of them and seriously injuring the other. Not only did he have physical tests to overcome, he also had to overcome emotional tests as well.

Transformation

Ender went from being unable to defend himself and relying on his sister Valentine to protect him, to being able to act like his older brother Peter who wasn't afraid to fight

“I'm doing it again, thought Ender. I'm hurting people again, just to save myself. Why don't they leave me alone, so I don't have to hurt them? “- Ender

Odysseus went from being arrogant king to being a beggar.

Enders Climax

The climax for Ender was when he fought Bonzo. At first it seemed like he was going to get jumped by all of the boys that surrounded him. Ender ended up winning seriously injuring the Bonzo, and killing him though Ender never found out.

Odysseus Climax

The climax for Odysseus was when he fought the suitors, after he completed the challenge of getting the bow into 12 axes he fought the suitors killing all of them. Winning back his wife Penelope.

Climax Comparison

What I could notice about both Heroes was that their climax had to deal with fighting one of their biggest enemies. They also both ended up killing their enemies.

One difference was that Odysseus’ was intending on killing the suitors. While Ender was just trying to teach Bonzo a lesson.
