Our Youth and Mini section continue to thrive and on each Sunday that I can make it to the Club I am always thrilled by the sheer quantity of youngsters playing and learning the game. As always we must say a big thank you to each and every parent, friend, volunteer and coach who makes this possible. I will allow Bruce Skingley, our outgoing Youth Chairman to elaborate more in this newsletter. However, I would like to take the opportunity to thank him for his hard work and dedication during his tenure. Looking forward to next season we hope to be signed off with full RFU accreditation shortly which will be another feather in the NRUFC cap. This along with the well publicised new lease give us more reason for optimism. We do however, need the support of the wider rugby family and there are a range of volunteer roles within the Club which will be vacant going into the new season - I would ask that anybody interested in taking on a role within the Club please get in contact. We are ever indebted to the hard work of those for occupy these roles and Robert Voss and Caroline Hillary in particular have sacrificed a great deal of their time this year to take the Club forward. To finish we have the first major fundraising event for the new building fund on 1st July. This rugby festival will incorporate a Tag tournament, Veterans game, BBQ and Live music. We look forward to seeing you there. Left: Harvey speaking at the senior awards dinner. Right: Mr Chairman addressing the youth section during their celebratory evening

End of Season Edition May 2017

A few words from Harvey Bell, NRUFC Chairman…

At this time of year we can reflect on the past season as well as look forward with great optimism to what lies

ahead. Newmarket has always been a Club which has punched above its weight given the size of those around us

and 2016/17 has been no different. From the Minis to the 1st XV, from the County Tournaments to Eastern

Counties 1, the players and all those who represent us do the Club proud.

We have an exciting and challenging time ahead with the 1st XV securing a position in the newly created London

Eastern Counties 3 League which is sure to make the senior section raise its game to another level. The 2nd XV have

sometimes struggled to get a full squad out this year. It is a priority of the Club to have this back up and running

next season. This will not only strengthen the senior section but will provide an essential platform for The Colts

coming through. A big thank you to Dave Sayer who has completed his first full season back as Club Head Coach

and to Ray Richardson, our Director of Rugby.

Our Youth and Mini section continue to thrive and on each Sunday that I can make it to the Club I am always

thrilled by the sheer quantity of youngsters playing and learning the game. As always we must say a big thank you

to each and every parent, friend, volunteer and coach who makes this possible. I will allow Bruce Skingley, our

outgoing Youth Chairman to elaborate more in this newsletter. However, I would like to take the opportunity to

thank him for his hard work and dedication during his tenure.

Looking forward to next season we hope to be signed off with full RFU accreditation shortly which will be another

feather in the NRUFC cap. This along with the well publicised new lease give us more reason for optimism. We do

however, need the support of the wider rugby family and there are a range of volunteer roles within the Club which

will be vacant going into the new season - I would ask that anybody interested in taking on a role within the Club

please get in contact. We are ever indebted to the hard work of those for occupy these roles and Robert Voss and

Caroline Hillary in particular have sacrificed a great deal of their time this year to take the Club forward.

To finish we have the first major fundraising event for the new building fund on 1st July. This rugby festival will

incorporate a Tag tournament, Veterans game, BBQ and Live music. We look forward to seeing you there.

Senior News and Awards

Well what a great end to a season! The 1st XV put in a lot of hard work this year and

their perseverance and determination helped secure them a place in a new league

next season which we are looking forward to. It will also give us the chance to cross

paths with some old friends such as Ely and Southwold.

This league will be tough so the hard work will start in July with pre-season training

which will be open to all old and new so please get your boots dusted off and come

and join us. All ages and abilities are welcome, the only must-have is a great positive

attitude.

I am also excited by the news we will be able to put out a Colts squad for the first

time in a while and watching the current U16s who will evolve into next seasons Colts

I am impressed. These lads look good which means the future is bright for us at all

levels of the senior game. The Colts training night has now changed to a Thursday

evening so they are able to integrate in to the Senior teams and gain some

experience and confidence from working with the older teams. This also helps with

transitioning to different teams when the time is right and allows me to work with

their coach and have an input to their development.

The 2nd team will now be my focus as we need to be able to field two teams on

Saturdays and have a stable platform for colts and new players to be able to enjoy

there rugby. Captains and managers for both senior sides need to be filled so please

let me know if you are interested and how the Club could help you

Thank you to the Club for giving me the chance to coach again and I am looking

forward to the future it is going to be a great couple of years coming up.

Bruce Skingley - Youth & Minis Chairman

Youth Awards evening Held at the Astley Club

The youth and mini sections have again exceeded expectations this

season with excellent performances on the field. That can only

happen with the hard work and dedication of the coaches and

volunteers, long may we continue to be a thorn in the side of our

bigger and noisier neighbours.

This is my last season as Youth Chairman and while it has been

hard work it has also been immensely satisfying and the fact that

we now have a Colts team for the first time in over three years is

very pleasing.

The U14 season has been very rewarding and frustrating at the same time. The boys had an excellent cup run only

to fall foul of the 'trys per game' rule so missing out on the final by one try.

The tour of the Channel Islands had been long anticipated by the whole team and it did not disappoint. The boys

had an amazing time and played the best rugby of their season.

We have had a great season playing clubs from Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex and have given an

excellent account of ourselves, winning most of our games. The boys have truly represented the core values of

rugby, regularly surprising our opposition with the structure, discipline and teamwork we are capable of. This has

earned us respect from many much larger clubs. Most impressive of all has been our speed of play and passing

skills which have at times been way beyond the boys years

If anyone knows how to tell a 9 or 10 year old that the game isn't competitive when you need to run hard like

Jonathan Joeseph and tackle like Joe Launchbury did during the 2017 Six Nations then please let me know.

Sometimes it is not for the faint hearted standing on the touch line but the boys continually put their bodies on the

line and never gave up.

We had the honour of playing at Welford Road in the Prima Cup and at the Allianz stadium in a superb little festival

that we hope to do again next season and both times the boys acquitted themselves superbly. At Welford road

they won 1 game and lost 1 while at The Allianz they won 4, drew 1 and lost 1. Some great rugby was seen in both

defence and attack with some tries scored which even the club teams on display layer that day would have been

pleased to have been part of.

Onwards and upwards guys and here's to next season!!

Our 1st year of contact and it is great to see that the vast majority of team continue to train regularly.

Everyone in the team seems to have really stepped up and are making an impact on the pitch. With such a small

team, we regularly attend festivals with only 1 or 2 spare players and so everyone has to put their full commitment

into each game - really impressive to see that they all still want to play even the 6th game of the day, irrespective

of how tired they are.

Every player has made massive skills developments this year, whether it be new skills like tackling, or some of the

old skills from tag. They aren’t all chasing the ball, but working as a team, communicating and playing proper

rugby. In particular, their attacking play is some of the best against even the best teams they have played.

We had a great awards day. We started by warming up ( where we were joined by 2 senior players) and then

moved on to a few games of Bull Dog – senior players in the middle found it was more difficult than they thought

to get those tags… Then it was a game of kids v parents (a must for awards day) I’m delighted to say Under 7s rose

to the occasion and came out on top to beat the parents in a close game. U7 U8
