Dear John Sample,

Memorial Day has always had special meaning to Sergeant Tom Shepard, as he remembers his buddies who sacrificed all for our freedom.

Tom was lucky ... he came home ... but his life changed forever on one fateful day in Afghanistan when an IED blast ripped through his body.

He required immediate surgery in Khandahar, then was flown to Germany for more care. Finally he was transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he spent time in the ICU.

As Tom’s wife, Brandy, described his injuries, she said;

His left leg was amputated above the knee. It is closed up & healing well. His arms had a lot of shrapnel wounds. Those wounds are now closed up & all bandages have been removed from his arms. He has many stitches in various places on his arms, but they are healing well. Two of Tom’s fingertips were amputated: his forefinger (trigger finger) and ring finger, both on his right hand. The flash burns on his face & arms are also healing well.

Tom’s right leg is the major wound now. A lot of the muscle from mid-calf up is gone. “Miraculously,” as doctors say, all tendons, ligaments, bone and nerves are still intact! For now he continues to go to surgery every 2-3 days for I&D (Irrigation & Debridement) of the wound.

Wounded heroes like Tom deserve our help. They suffer from ailments like traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and polytrauma. They have lived through soul-jarring bomb blasts that have caused burns, claimed limbs and stolen the lives of comrades.

As they focus their energy on healing and turn their thoughts and concerns to their own families and comrades …The American Legion is there to help ensure their most basic needs are met. It may be help paying the bills or connecting wounded troops with their families during their long hospital stays. Or, it may be helping to connect them with support services in their hometowns or to file medical claims in the often confusing VA Health care system.

In order to provide these important services - in order to help veterans like Tom - we need your help!

– Over Please –

Send a special Memorial Day gift TODAY! Your support will help our veterans and our wounded troops through American Legion programs like Heroes to Hometowns and Operation Comfort Warriors.

In addition, this Memorial Day you have the opportunity to honor our brave heroes - heroes like Tom - by paying tribute to those who sacrificed all for our freedom.

Please let me explain ...

Enclosed is a very special Wall of Honor card. Please fill it out and return it to me ASAP. I have reserved a spot on our “Wall of Honor” for your card! I can’t think of a better way to honor our brave troops that made it home than by honoring a hero that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Whether you wish to honor a family member who served years ago or a fallen hero in your community ... our special “Wall of Honor” will not be complete without your card. STEP #1 Complete the enclosed Wall of Honor card. This is a great way to pay tribute to a fallen hero this Memorial Day in a lasting, meaningful way. I will make sure your card takes its rightful place on our wall with thousands of other cards.

I want all who see the “Wall of Honor” on Memorial Day to remember that the freedom we enjoy today came at a very steep price. Thousands of brave heroes made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and their sacrifice should never be forgotten.

STEP #2 Enclose your Wall of Honor card in the return envelope I have provided, along with your best gift. The size of your gift is not as important as knowing that you stand with our veterans and wish to honor their bravery and sacrifice.

In a moving tribute to our Nation’s Heroes, we will display our “Wall of Honor” on Memorial Day in our nation’s capital - Washington, D.C. Think of what it will mean to our veterans – who sacrificed so much for our freedom – to see such a moving tribute to our fallen heroes - their comrades - past and present. STEP #3 Mail your Wall of Honor card to me along with your donation as quickly as you can. Remember, I have reserved a spot on our “Wall of Honor” for your card. Please honor those who have shed their blood for our freedom and say to young men and women like Sergeant Shepard, “We will never forget the sacrifices you have made for our country.”

I hope and pray that your answer to these questions will be YES! Remember, I don’t want your spot of honor to be left empty and our wall to be incomplete, so please send your card back to me TODAY!

Yours for our wounded heroes,

William A. Pease National Development Director The American Legion

P.S. Please take a few minutes to complete the enclosed reply form and Wall of Honor card and return them to me, along with your best gift, as quickly as you can get it in the mail. For your card to be included in our “Wall of Honor”, which will be on display in Washington D.C. on Memorial Day, I must receive it immediately, so please don’t delay.
