My oldest daughter attends Tejeda Middle School, my other two daughters and two sons attend Encino Park Elementary. When I joined the Board a year and a half ago, I thought we would meet and discuss some items once a month to keep things clean and move on. is was not the case. ere are a lot of decisions and duties that have to be done each month and throughout the year. During this time, we have had increasing attendance to the monthly meetings. I encourage everyone to try and attend these meetings to see and hear for themselves how issues are discussed and decided upon. Our Homeowner’s Association has a unique amenity, an onsite property manager. Most associations do not, so please take advantage of this opportunity to visit and express any of your ideas and concerns in person. Doing so allows us to put these items on the agenda so we can discuss them at our monthly meetings. I hope we continue to increase the attendance to the monthly meetings. e more involvement we have in our community, the better chance we have in keeping the experience that is “Encino Park”. MONTHLY MEETINGSGrowing up in San Antonio has allowed me the opportunity to

experience “Encino Park” as many of my friends from high school lived here. So when my family and I decided to move out this way, we selected Encino Park. We had to rent a house for a year until a home became available to purchase in 2007. My oldest daughter attends Tejeda Middle School, my other two daughters and two sons attend Encino Park Elementary.

When I joined the Board a year and a half ago, I thought we would meet and discuss some items once a month to keep things clean and move on. This was not the case. CONNECTIONIn 2009, my family and I had the opportunity to move into the

Encino Park area, “The Forrest”, behind Encino Park Elementary. While this wasn’t within our HOA, it was close by and we were excited to be near such a great school and community. My wife was pregnant with our 4 1/2 year old daughter Jocelyn. Now we have a second daughter, Brynlee who is 8 months old, full of life and energy as she has begun to crawl and explore her surroundings and connect with people.

Connecting with people is at the center of my article today. A large part of why we stayed in Encino Park was the kindness of our neighbors. They offered to watch our dogs, made a meal when our daughter was born and provided a warm welcome even though they didn’t know us. They even waved and smiled when we passed (yes even on a busy days, as a single mom that was exhausted and stressed).

This type of overtly warm hospitality and welcome is a model for us all. So today, I challenge you to do something extra for your neighbor! Do something for an old friend or an elderly person down the street that you know doesn’t get out much. Or, maybe drop a meal off for a young family that lives down the block. But, whatever you do, do it without expectations and just let them know you care and want to brighten their day.

You never know the impact you may have on someone by bringing a smile to their face. Who knows the impact of that connection or the trickle down affect if you are willing to show your neighbor you care.

PLEASE HELP THE BOY SCOUTS FILL THE TRAILER!   

Your local Boy Scout Troop (Troop 360) and Goodwill need your help in “filling the trailer”. Please bring your good, clean, sellable items for donation to Encino Park Elementary (2550 Encino Rio) on April 26, 2014 from 10am-5pm.  We’ll have a trailer available to take your items where they’re needed most.

We will be accepting Computers & Accessories, Bedspreads/Blankets, Antiques, Books, Clothing, Cookware, Dishes, Frames, Pictures, Games/Toys, Housewares, Jewelry, Lamps, Office Supplies, Radios, Shoes, Small Appliances, Sporting Goods, Televisions, and Wheeled Toys.   Sorry, we can’t take Auto Parts, tires, motors, soiled furniture, carpets, scrap lumber, mattresses and box springs, bricks, stones, or concrete. 

This event will help both your local Scouts and Goodwill. Thanks for your help.

WOMEN’S CLUBThe EPWC would like to extend special thanks to

Barbara McNeely from Mariposa Naturals. She is a Natural Health Coach and Chemical Sensitivity Expert in San Antonio and she was the guest speaker at our March meeting. We had an interesting discussion about different kinds of fats and cooking oils, and chemical sensitivities and migraines. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us Barbara!

UPCOMING EVENTS:Our next meeting will be Monday, April 14 at 7:00 at

the Community Center. We will be voting for new officers at this meeting.

EASTER EGG HUNT - April 18Easter Egg Hunt for Encino Park kids. The Easter

Bunny will be there! This will be held RAIN OR SHINE on Friday, April 18. It will begin at 10:00 AM sharp. Residents can help if they would like by donating individually wrapped packages of candy, gummy candy, and small packs of crackers. Donations can be dropped off by April 5 at the HOA office. THANK YOU!

ENCINO PARK COMMUNITY GARAGE SALES – Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3

The Annual Encino Park Community Garage Sales will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3 from 9:00 -5:00. The Encino Park Women’s Club provides advertising in the Express News and online sites. Each family participating is responsible for purchasing their own garage sale permit. A permit can be purchased at participating Heb stores.

The Encino Park Women’s Club meets every month on the second Monday at 7:00 at the Community Center. For more information, contact our club President, Elice Palmer, at [email protected] or 210-497-7642.

Conservation AuditWell, it seems the winter rains passed up by!

Here’s hoping for April showers!During 2013, much like 2012, our average rainfall hovered around

32 inches District-wide. Unfortunately, most of this was received during sporadic weather events throughout the year. Case in point, we received ten inches of rain over Memorial Day weekend. While every drop is welcome, high rainfall within such a short timeframe results in much of that rain running off into our streams and rivers providing little to recharge our aquifers. Please bear this in mind as winter winds down and you begin spring planting and yard care.

Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGRGCD) would like to ask for your continued help in reducing demand on groundwater resources. We offer a free on-site consultation to identify problems areas that could be resulting in higher water usage to home or business owners residing within our District. Following the visit, we offer recommendations to help reduce water usage both inside and outside the home and a “goody” bag full of conservation-related items, including a hose timer, moisture meter, and low-flow showerhead.

In April our lunch location will be Heavenly Pho (pronounced “fuh”) at 19178 Blanco Road, #305, on Tuesday the 22nd.  This is a Vietnamese Cuisine Restaurant that features “fresh, healthy choices and wonderful flavors”.  They have menu selections for those with certain food allergies and a wide variety of Asian offerings.  It is located on Blanco Road between 1604 and Huebner, in the Blanco Market Shopping Center next to Double Dave’s Pizza Works.  We will be there, as always, at 11:30.  Please call Janet at 481-9956 by Saturday the 19th if you are going.

In February nine ladies traveled to La Cantera to dine at Cafe’ Bistro in Nordstrom’s.  We had a delightful time with delicious food and great conversation,  and   although this is a somewhat self-service place, the attention and service  we received was great. The staff seemed genuinely glad to have us there, and we were glad to be there.  It was very nice outing.  Thank you Jennifer Hayes for hosting!
