Hello and Welcome to the September 2012, issue of EN Magazine.

With the summer holidays behind us and the thought of the long dark winter to come, many people do not like this time of year. Hopefully this issue of EN Magazine will help cheer you up.

EN magazine has got together with Associated Response and Vaillant, to offer one reader the chance to win a new combi boiler heating system. Modern boilers not only heat your home but due to their efficiency in most cases reduce fuel costs. This prize is open to all our readers and also offers runners up the chance to win a free power flush and service on your existing heating system.

Recently EN Magazine sent me to investigate an overnight getaway at a spa. Could a one night stay refresh, relax and revitalise me? You can find out how I got on in this issue.

Walking around the area it seems that in almost every street a house is having a loft conversion. We investigate why so many people are turning to this as an option for more space and what they are using the space for.

Congratulations to Sarah Collingbourne who won the Go Ape competition and James McCaughey who won the City Cruises competition in the July/August issue of EN Magazine. We hope you enjoy your days out.

I hope that you enjoy reading this issue of EN Magazine. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any comments on this issue at [email protected]

Kind regards

NorthLondonHospicewilldramaticallyimprovethelivesofpeoplelivingwithlife-limitingillnesseswiththeopeningofnewsiteinEnfield.

After five-years in the making the North London Hospice site, in Barrowell Green, Winchmore Hill, welcomed its first day patients yesterday.

North London Hospice has provided care and support services for outpatients from Barnet, Haringey and Enfield for almost 20 years. Until now, those services have all been provided from an established inpatient unit in Finchley.

The new Enfield facility, which will offer an enhanced range of services, will eventually allow the hospice to reach three times as many members of the community who have a life-limited or terminal illness and those who support them.

Patient Eleni Robb, who lives in nearby Edmonton, welcomed the centre. She was able to enjoy the first art therapy and relaxation sessions in the building yesterday.

Mrs Robb, 76, said: “The new centre is going to make a huge difference to my life, as I will be able to receive day care closer to home. I love art so I’m really looking forward to being able to take part in sessions and learn new things. It ís an opportunity for me to be more independent and meet people in a similar situation to me.”

The building has a number of treatment rooms to provide specialist procedures without the patient having to visit a hospital; counselling and spiritual care to enable people to deal with the emotional stress of their situation and physiotherapy to help patients maintain mobility for longer.

In addition, massage, reflexology, creative and complementary therapies will be available to reduce anxiety, assist in pain relief and control other symptoms. New opportunities of support will also be available for patients, carers and families.

North London Hospice chief executive Douglas Bennett said: “It has been a particularly busy and exciting time for the hospice. This fantastic new facility will maximise the opportunities for enjoyment and life enrichment for patients and their families at a difficult time.

“It will allow us to be in an even better position to ensure people can stay independent and at home for as long as possible, by providing high quality day services to even more patients and their families.”

Currently, the facility is for patients already known to the community specialist palliative care team in the boroughs of Enfield, Barnet and Haringey.

ThesuccessoftherecentOlympicGamesandtheParaOlympicGameshasbeenrightlycreditedtothethousandsofpeoplevolunteeredtobecomeGamesMakers.

Following the success of the games makers people are being encouraged to get involved with helping out with giving their time at local sporting events.

EN Magazine went along to meet one of the local Games Makers, Jason Coombs of Autosure, to find out more about his experiences and to see if he has encouraged him to help out at other events.

“After deciding last year to try and get involved in, what will be the biggest event in my home town in my lifetime, I applied online to become a 2012 Games Maker. A few months later I received an email that confirmed that I had got through to the interview stage of the selection process and was invited to attend an interview. It was quite an odd moment, actually, attending an interview for the first time in about 20 years. The interview lasted about 15 minutes and then no sooner had it begun I was on my way home to wait to see if I had been successful.”

“The email from the powers that be arrived 3 days before Christmas.

And...Success! I had been offered a role at the Olympic Games! My main role at the Games was to deal with people (and journalists!) arriving at and departing from the Broadcast and Media Centre.”

“I am sure that you will agree with me that London 2012 was probably the most successful Olympic Games in living memory. Throughout the application process and all the training sessions, I knew that it was going to be a special event. But in reality it was the most amazing experience in

my life. I am so proud that I was able to be part of the Greatest Show on Earth in my hometown. London 2012 has shown the rest of the world what a great country and people we are.

Hopefully, it has also reminded us that, as a nation, we can rise to any challenge when we all work together.”

“But has it made me want to get involved at other events beyond the Olympics? The answer is yes, having experienced first hand the difference that volunteers can make to the success of an event of Olympic proportions I am now turning my hand to more local events. On the 7th of October I have volunteered to be a marshal at the Chickenshed’s 10k Challenge and 3K Family fun run on the 7th October. I have also encouraged other local business people I know through the Gold Table networking group to volunteer their time to help at this event.”

Vic Smith Beds24 Years On, Sti ll Going Strong.

Most people associate the name Vic Smith with beds and rightf ully so, but did you know we used to be manufacturers of pine furniture, and we sti ll have pine ranges but we also carry a large range of solid oak furniture in the traditi onal oak, rusti c oak and the modern contemporary oak. If it is the oak look you are aft er but it is a bit too strong for your pocket, we also carry hard woods that look like oak or pine that can be stained to an oak fi nish. All our oak is solid. A lot of shops and manufacturers make this claim by using four pieces of oak to make a box, and the middle core is hollow. When we say solid oak, whether it be light oak or rusti c, it is truly solid, through and through. That carries across from our dining room tables and chairs, T.V. units, wardrobes and chest of drawers. All of our oak is solid. The rusti c oak, we are now showing on line as well as in store with the rest of our oak, pine and hardwood ranges.

Our oak furniture is very competi ti ve & that is one advantage of a recession - prices are very, very good value for money. Having large stocks, we can deliver same or next day from stock which is very important to a lot of people. When we deliver wardrobes, we don’t expect our customers to lug these upstairs and set them up – we do it, it’s all part of the service. That’s why you buy from us, fantasti c quality, our prices are unbeatable, and our service is second to none. We have used the same template that has made our beds and our good name market leaders for the last 24 years.

With the Diamond Jubilee, we have seen local communiti es coming together with street parti es which we think is fantasti c for the country. We have been happy and proud to sponsor a few street parti es in Enfi eld & Barnet. We wish the weather had been bett er. To keep the Briti sh spirit going, we’re going to have in June a ‘Buy Briti sh’ and save up to 10% when you bring in this editorial or when you produce one of our union jack discount vouchers from our website.

TheCouncilTaxbenefitschemeischangingandpeopleinHertsmerearebeingaskedwhattheythinkaboutthechanges.

As part of the government’s welfare reform programme, the existing scheme for people who claim Council Tax benefit is going to be replaced with a new localised Council Tax Support scheme from 1 April 2013.

The amount of funding Hertsmere Borough Council and precepting authorities like Hertfordshire County Council and Hertfordshire Police receive from the Government will be reduced by 10%.

Hertsmere Borough Council, in consultation with Hertfordshire Police and Hertfordshire County Council, has come up with proposals that work within the revised budget,

protect the most vulnerable and encourage more people into work.

Under the proposed new scheme, which is out for public consultation, pensioners, disabled people and lone parents with children under the age of five, won’t see any change in their Council Tax benefits. Benefit claimants of working age, who are not in one of these groups, would be required to pay more towards their Council Tax bill.

Currently, a person can get 100% Council Tax benefit, regardless of the size of their house. This would change so that a person’s Council Tax Support is capped at Band D* level.

Reductions in Council Tax discounts and exemptions on second homes and empty homes are also

being considered, as well as proposals which will require working adults living in a household where Council Tax Support is claimed to contribute more towards the bill.

Councillor Morris Bright, leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “In this economic climate, when less funding is available from the Government, difficult decisions have to be made to ensure vital local services, like the police, schools, waste management and housing, are protected.

“With a 10% cut in Council Tax Support funding from the Government we need to change this scheme, which means some people may have to pay more than they currently do.

“We are planning to protect the most vulnerable people in our community such as the disabled, those with young children and the elderly. Under our proposals, they would see no rises in their bills.”

Council Tax benefit is available

for people on job-seekers allowance or income support, or for anyone who has a low income.

The public consultation will run until October 15. To find out more and give your views, fill in the online form at http://www.hertsmere.gov.uk/councildemocracy/consultations/counciltaxsupport.jsp or visit the Civic Offices, Elstree Way, Borehamwood, the council’s offices in Wyllyotts Centre, Wyllyotts Place, Darkes Lane, Potters Bar.

The consultation is being run in conjunction with the Citizens Advice Bureau in Hertsmere and Community Action Hertsmere.

A decision, taking into account feedback from the consultation, will be made by full council on January 16

The tea room is a more recent innovation. Father Edward Dowler wanted to bring more people into St Luke’s, and cast around for ideas. He netted Clare Leybourne, who specialises in pop-up tea rooms with a vintage vibe.

Clare runs a 1940s-style tea room called Put The Kettle On in the hospitality area of the church. The room is decked out with tables clad in brightly-coloured polka dot covers, is festooned with bunting and has period music playing out should you feel the urge to add an element of dance to your tea. Gingham curtains add to the atmosphere, along with the vast collection of china cups, saucers and plates – sporting a riot of floral designs – which are all part of the vintage tea-time experience that Clare offers.

The cakes are made by local family businesses and offer a great variety, including vegan and gluten-free options, and sandwiches are made to order. You can dine al fresco in the church grounds, or even request a picnic to take across the road to the greenery of Hilly Fields, where you can recline on a rug and watch the world go by. (Rugs and flasks are available for hire.)

EN asked Clare how she came to be selling tea and cakes in a church. “It stems from a passion for tea, and for all things vintage” Clare explained. ‘My cousin lives in the 1940s fashion, and we went to their wedding. I was trying to find something to wear, and found the whole vintage scene was amazing. I didn’t wear dresses before, but

now I wear them all the time.” Clare dresses the part, from the forties film-star hair, to the fabulous frocks. “I started going to vintage fairs and began making things to sell, and really enjoyed it. Then I was asked to provide a pop-up tea room at a fair, and things grew from there.”

‘Father Edward contacted me and I thought the church was a great setting for a tea room. I’d been collecting china, so had a lot of the equipment already, and I knew people locally who could make cakes, so we were able to get things together in just a few weeks.’

Prices are more than reasonable (a cup of tea will set you back all of 80p) and the cakes are scrummy. In addition to the goodies available to eat and drink, there is also a range of hand-made cards and craft items to browse through and buy.

Clare also provides a pop-up tea room service for parties – ‘A one-stop shop full of vintage fun’ as she declares on her website. Meanwhile Clare’s sister, Belle, can create vintage-style hair and make up for any occasion.

The tea shop is also open on some Sunday afternoons, and tea and cakes for two will leave you with change out of £5.

Forthcoming attractions at Put The Kettle On include a Macmillan charity event on Saturday 29 September from 9am – 4pm. As well as teas, cakes, sandwiches and ice creams there will be craft activities for the children, a raffle with prizes donated by exhibitors, plus dance lessons and a demo by Jive Swing.

Why not dig out the mixing bowel and cake tins from the back of the kitchen cupboard and have a go at baking. To help inspire you to start mixing up a tasty treat did you know that National Cupcake Week 2012 is September 17th - 23rd and National Baking Week 2012 October 15th-21st, so what more motivation do you need – oh yes you’ll get to taste all the cakes you cook.

National Cupcake Week (September 17th - 23rd) has a range of mouth-watering events, bake-offs, demonstrations, tastings and fund-raising sales at hundreds of craft and independent bakeries, cafes and tea shops, grocery stores and retailers across the nation. Created by the trade magazine British Baker, to celebrate the growth, vibrancy and innovation of the British cupcake industry, the aim of National Cupcake Week, is to get the whole nation enjoying at least one cupcake a day. This year’s event includes special cupcake tasting

sessions in selected Budgens shops across the Home Counties; cupcake making competitions; and cupcake baking and decorating courses for children at nurseries and clubs, from Bournemouth to Birmingham. British Baker, is teaming up once again with the leading children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, who are asking cupcake lovers to help raise donations for their beneficiaries during National Cupcake Week by buying cupcake pin badges (available at all 191 Budgens stores, selected independent retailers and at some cupcake stalls/street markets). Sabrina Collins, from Lady Jayne’s Cakes, winner of best themed cupcake at this year’s National Cupcake Championship, will be baking for children and young people with cancer on Tuesday, September 4 (2pm onwards) at CLIC Sargent’s London home from home, Paul’s House.

To find out how to get involved in National Cupcake Week and what’s happening, visit www.nationalcupcakeweek.co.uk

National Baking Week 2012 is taking over October (15th-21st) with a celebration of what makes our nation great.

To mark the event, a map of the UK made entirely of cake will be created and housed at the prestigious shopping and leisure destinatio,n Westfield Stratford City.

Baker extraordinaire Ruth Clemens will be fronting the campaig,n, creating a variety of hints and tips and new recipes, some of which will be available as videos. Ruth will be holding a live Tweet cast with fans and followers from the cake at Westfield Stratford City in October. It’s the perfect opportunity for visitors to ask their baking questions.

Myf Ryan, General Marketing Manager, Westfield UK said:

“This partnership with National Baking Week, presents an exciting opportunity for shoppers and retailers at Westfield Stratford City. Baking has become a national past time and we are delighted to host this bastion of Britishness at the centre. There is no better location to host the Nations’ Cake, than at Stratford, hosting the ‘greatest show on earth’, the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

This year the campaign will be supporting Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, by encouraging people to raise money for the charity through a range of activities.

“We’re delighted to have teamed up with National Baking Week,” said Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity Senior Fundraising Executive Hayley Richardson. “Great Ormond Street Hospital, provides inspirational and world-class care to hundreds of children every day. But we need to raise over £50 million every year to help keep the magic alive. We rely heavily on fundraising to carry out our vital work and NBW has lots going on to get people involved and fundraising. There will be a charity baking experience auction, special Baking Kits for sale, a downloadable Bake Sale pack for people to hold their own bake sale, not to mention appearances from Great Ormond Street Hospital’s supporter TV star

Lisa Faulkner.”

Local business owner, James of James Whitaker Hair, has decided to put his words and that of his team where his mouth is.

“As local hairdressers we spend most of the day on our feet standing behind customers. When I heard about the Mayors Fun Run, I though that this would be a great way to get my colleagues exercising and raising money for a good cause in the local community.”

“I know some of the team are dreading the experience, as they have not run since their school days, but we are not trying to set fast times, just for everyone to get round and have fun for very good causes.”

The fun run takes place on Sunday 9th of September, over distances of 10km and 3km Fun Run and 3km Fun Walk, organised by the Enfield Everybody Active Team in support of the Mayor’s Charity, in the beautiful grounds of Forty Hall.

Money raised from the Fun Run, Fun Walk and Family Fun Day will be donated to the Mayor’s

chosen charities: the Enfield Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Organisation, North Middlesex Maternity Unit, Our Voice; a parent-led organisation aiming to improve services for children and young people with disabilities or special educational needs, and the Tottenham Hotspur E18HTEEN project, supporting young people aged 16-19 who are either in care or are care leavers into education and employment.

On the day there will also be a Family Fun Day from 10am to 1pm at Forty Hall in celebration of the closing of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the pony rides, circus skills workshop, bouncy castle, football and more, for only £3.50.

People can register to participate by filling out the entry form on www.enfield.gov.uk/funrun by 3 September. No entries will be allowed on the day. Numbers are limited, so people are encouraged to register early to avoid disappointment.

WIN WIN WIN a New Combi Boiler and

installation with EN Magazine

from Vaillant and Associated Response

With the cold of winter just around the corner, no doubt we will start hearing on the news that gas suppliers are once again putting up the cost of gas.

EN Magazine is giving one lucky reader the opportunity to heat their home for less this winter with a brand new gas combi boiler from Vaillant and installed for freeby Associated Response, to the value of £3,000.

Even if your boiler is fairly new, you will have the opportunity of winning a runner up prizes of a free power flush, worth £400, to improve the performance in time for winter, a free service, worth £80, and or a 10% voucher for a

future service. Or you could even donate the boiler to a family member, friend or local charity.

Since launching 4 years ago, Associated Response has built up strong relationships with local residents and letting agents within the community of Enfield and surrounding areas. By concentrating their services in the EN areas they are able to give their clients rapid response times to any call out – a distinct advantage over other engineers carrying out work all over London.

Their motorbikes are modified to carry all the equipment to deal with heating and plumbing emergencies for their 24 hour call out service, with response times often under 10 minutes. They have a dedicated team of Gas Safe Registered engineers, who follow up in the vans for installations, services and general plumbing needs.

From a tap washer, to a full heating system, kitchen or bathroom installation, to emergency 24 hour call out Associated Response is there for you.

They would encourage everyone who reads this to enter the competition, even if you have had a boiler installed recently, as the runner up prizes will help improve the efficiency of your heating system. It is available to friends, family or can even be donated to a local charity of your choice.

For more than 135 years, Vaillant has been setting the standards in the heating market, creating products that have revolutionised the industry, from water heaters in the early 1900’s, to pioneering the ‘combi’ boiler over 45 years ago. Today, they are as proud to be leading the way in renewable technologies, developing systems which utilise sustainable sources of energy. This enables you to enjoy simple, healthy and energy saving solutions for your heating, cooling and hot water needs.

High efficiency combination boilers are becoming an increasingly popular choice in UK homes and now account for well over half of all new domestic boilers installed in Britain every year.

ecoTEC condensing combination boilers require no hot water cylinder or cold water storage tank, minimising the space they occupy. Vaillant’s range of combination boilers is broad enough to ensure the ideal solution for all house types - from a typical one bedroom/bathroom flat through to a four bedroom property with two bathrooms.

Vaillant also offer a range of system and open vent boilers. For more information please visit www.vaillant.co.uk

Time away lying on a beach or just relaxing also allows us to think and examine our daily existence. If you have come to the unhappy conclusion that your relationship is over and want to take the first step to find out your legal position it can be a very intimidating and daunting thought with the worry of how long it is going to take and what it is going to cost.

There is a lot of information on the internet about divorce and there are sites set up to help you get one. Actually getting divorced is a relatively straight forward process if it is not contested and not many

divorces are nowadays. A divorce can take as little as 4 months. It may seem a long time but it isn’t.

Sorting out the children and the money are the difficult areas and no amount of information on the internet can replace face to face advice from an experienced solicitor who will give you advice tailor made to your situation. Each case is different and there is no set formula for any financial outcome, only a range of reasonable likely scenarios. Ultimately a court can make an order but the reality is it is only the multimillionaires who spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on legal fees who can afford to have a final hearing. For the rest of us it is best to sort the matter out sooner rather than later to save your money and keep more of the assets for both of you. Also, if you have children you will always be their parents and one day you will both want to be at their 18th or 21st birthday, graduation or wedding and it is better for you both to maintain a civilised relationship with each other as much as you can to prevent your children from being scarred by their parents’

divorce. The children will suffer if you make it hard for each other but they won’t if you both remember that once you did love each other and may even have vowed to be together until death parted you. You should remember that you still love your children and so if you have decided to separate you should divorce your loved one with the dignity that at one time you would have bent over to give to them.

Believe it or not it is possible to separate from your partner in a friendly and dignified manner, not spend a fortune and not leave a wake of destruction behind you. It’s called Mediation.

Mediation is not counselling. It is not about trying to get back together. It is about accepting that the relationship is over and looking to the future and trying to find your own solutions to the arrangements for the children and sorting out the money and the property.

The Mediator is impartial. He or she does not take sides and cannot give either of you legal advice by telling you what is in your best interests but they can give you legal information about what the court can and cannot do and what is likely to happen in certain situations. Before starting Mediation it is a good idea to get legal advice to find out what could happen in your situation but it is not essential to do so

before starting the Mediation. If what you and your partner are discussing is totally outside what the court is likely to find acceptable the Mediator will tell you and also he or she will tell you when it is time to get legal advice. This may be when it is required to progress to the next stage or when you have made proposals and you need to know your legal position.

Mediation isn’t a second best to court. It is an alternative and is far more cost effective and an agreed outcome between you and your partner is more satisfying than an order imposed on you by a Judge or an order which you have to concede to as you are being advised to do so. As is it is your solution it is also more likely to work and this is particularly important when it concerns the children. There are no winners or losers in court divorce settlements as any outcome is at a cost both financial and emotional to each person.

In Mediation you both have to give to each other full details of your financial situations just as you do if you use a solicitor or apply to the court. In either situation you have to give full and frank disclosure and you can ask each other questions about the information provided but in Mediation you do so face to face with each other in the presence of the Mediator who can also ask questions. The exchange and examination

Legal Pageof financial information takes just a few hours in Mediation whereas it can take months and cost thousands of pounds if undertaken by solicitors or in the court proceedings.

All the discussions in Mediation are Without Prejudice which means that they cannot be referred to in any future court proceedings should the Mediation break down. There are exceptions to this such as if there are any child protection issues.

If the Mediation is successful the proposals will be incorporated in a Memorandum of Understanding which is also Without Prejudice and is not binding but the intention is that you will then take it to your solicitors for it to be made into a binding agreement. This can be an order in divorce or a separation agreement.

All financial information given in the Mediation can be used in any future negotiations or court proceedings should the Mediation break down so there is nothing wasted in the financial disclosure process.

Mediation sessions are 1 1/2 hours long. The average number of sessions for financial solutions only is 4 to 6 and for children only 1 to 3 and for both 4 to 8. The length from start to finish depends on the availability of each of the participants including the Mediator and is often determined by the information that is required before the next session. The Mediator helps you manage the process and guides you in what information has to be obtained but you set the Agenda for what is to be discussed at each meeting.

The legally trained Mediator’s hourly rate may be the same as or slightly more than a solicitor’s hourly rate but it is shared between you and the overall cost is far less than you each having a solicitor.

The government is slashing the eligibility for legal aid in divorce and children’s proceedings next year but legal aid will remain for Mediation for those who meet the income requirements.

Since April 2011 before starting all financial court applications and applications about children it has been a requirement to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting to see if Mediation is suitable and if the court can be avoided. There are exceptions and not all courts are enforcing this. Mediation is voluntary and is not compulsory and is not suitable in every situation but where the assets are limited and have been hard earned over the years at a time when the country remains in recession and court services are being cut and the courts are clogging up with too many cases do we really want to spend money when it isn’t necessary to do so and could use other means to achieve what is possibly a better and certainly a cheaper outcome than having a day ( or more) in court?

Mediation makes sense.

You may not have the time or the money for another holiday but want a quick fix to relax, recharge, refresh and rejuvenate yourself. Well at EN Magazine we think we have the answer – a trip to The Malvern Hotel, Spa and Health Club.

In planning my overnight break I wanted to feel like I had actually gone away. Rather than go somewhere local, I wanted to feel like I was traveling to my destination, I headed to Malvern in Worcestershire. I decided to take A roads rather than motorways, where possible, which meant the start of my trip was a pleasant drive through the scenic Cotswold

countryside. The journey to Malvern took just over 2 hours, it has taken me longer to drive into central London.

Arriving at the Malvern Spa, you may be disappointed when you first see the hotel, it is set on the edge of a business park next to a retail park, the phrase “never judge a book by a cover” applies perfectly to this destination.

Walking through the doors you are greeted by a clean smart reception area and an aroma with the subtle hint of chlorine, mixed with aromatherapy oils, the thought of what is to come had already started to excite my senses.

Once I had checked in, I was taken on a quick tour of the facilities, the grand salon where you can chill out and relax, the treatment rooms, the gym, the spa and pool area.

I was then left to head up to my room. My room at the Malvern was surprisingly spacious and all have TV Wifi and everything you would

expect from a modern hotel. They are clean and brightly decorated and for me a nice surprise was the view, being on the second floor I had a fantastic view of the Malvern Hills, looking straight out you would not have known you were on a business park.

I decided to start my visit with a trip to the gym, ok this may not be the start of a relaxing break for most people but after a couple of hours sat in the car it was nice to have a workout. The gym is well equipped with over 50 stations including running machines cross trainers rowing machines etc.

Having exercised for an hour, I did not feel guilty that I was now about to just relax for the rest of the day.

A quick trip back to my room to change into shorts and a toweling robe, supplied by the hotel. Now I must admit I was a bit self-conscious of walking around in a robe, but as everyone else is wearing them it soon passed.

Back downstairs and it was time for my first treatment, a combo massage, incorporating a back massage and facial. My therapist Hailey, went through a short questionnaire to find out if I had any medical conditions, allergies or specific areas I would like her to focus on. She took time to explain what the treatment would consist of and a choice of scented oils that she would be using.

I have had massages before and been disappointed, I like to feel the masseur actually working the tension out of the muscles in my back not just tickling them, Hailey did not disappoint. The massage was followed by a cleansing massage and I could not help to feel myself relaxing. Following the treatment Hailey advised me not to go into the sauna or spa for 30 mins to allow the moisturizers n my face to soak in. She then introduced me to the relaxation room, a dimly lit room with very comfortable loungers and projected onto

the whole of one wall, was a scene of waves breaking against the shore, with accompanying sound track, I challenge you not to lay back and relax in this room.

It was now time to venture into the spa area. The thermal suite includes 4 separate heat experiences;

Salt Grotto: Begin your experience by enjoying the healing properties of the Salt Grotto. Gently warm your body on the heated tiled seats, while being enveloped in salt steam. This rich, natural source of salt microns and negative ions, is reputed to have a restorative effect on the respiratory system, skin and ionic balance of the body for a complete feeling of wellbeing.

Crystal Steam Room: This large, fully tiled steam chamber with fibre-optic ceiling display is infused with essential oils, that fill the intensely warm and humid air with relaxing aromas. A fantastic way to open the pores and relieve tension in your body, you will step out feeling calm and refreshed.

Herb Sauna: For a more contemporary sauna, seasonal herbs and natural essential oils are gently steamed to cleanse body and mind in the Herb Sauna. This state of the art sauna, radiates a soft heat with a higher humidity than the harsh dry heat found in a standard sauna, so you can relax for longer.

Kelo Sauna: The first of its kind in the UK, this unique rustic sauna is constructed from naturally fragrant wood found only in the Arctic Circle. A large social space, there is

plenty of room to recline, chat or simply soak up the aromatic air atmosphere of this special experience.

Cold Therapies...On exiting the thermal experiences, they recommend you should ensure that you close the pores in your skin, and have a choice of methods to choose from, which as well as normal showers include:

Ice Fountain: This self administered treatment involves scooping handfuls of crushed ice from a large central fountain and rubbing vigorously onto the skin to stimulate circulation and close the pores.

Bucket (Drench) Shower: For the more adventurous, a much quicker way to cool down is to

use the cold bucket shower, which instantly drenches you in chilled water for an exhilarating end to your fire and ice experience.

Having spent time in each of the heat rooms and exiting to a mix of cold showers and yes I did try the bucket drench, I headed over to the pool.

A 20 meter indoor-outdoor hydrotherapy pool accommodates numerous individual features including vigorous bubble massage stations, powerful water jets, gentle hydrotherapy beds, and spacious, relaxing booths where you can chill and chat

Page 16: EN MAGAZINE September 2012

with friends, while soaking in the warmed Malvern spring waters.

Before my next treatment I spent some time relaxing in the Grand Salon. This is a spacious luxurious Italian-styled area, featuring Jerusalem stone flooring, beautiful 200 year old Olive trees, and contemporary but comfortable furnishings. The room is subtlety divided by grand pillars creating zones for maximum comfort and privacy, it’s easy to find a space in the Grand Salon, to suit your mood, you can lounge in the natural sunlight that floods in through the atrium and be soothed by the trickling water fountain.

My next treatment was a pedicure. Once again my therapist Isabel took the time to explain what was going to happen, which was reassuring as this was my first pedicure, something I must admit to enjoying this treatment and I am sure I will have it again.

In the evening I dined in the restaurant and was not only impressed with the quality of the food but also the value. I started with the smoked ham hock & free range egg terrine sauce gribiche, pickled vegetables, pancetta crisps - £6.25 followed by Garlic & herb crusted grey mullet sautéed samphire, confit tomatoes, grilled aubergine, tomato & basil sauce - £16.00. After a drink in the bar to finish the first part of my getaway I

headed off to bed.

I am not sure if it was the comfortable bed or all the relaxing treatments but I awoke feeling refreshed and I still had more to come.

After breakfast I spent some time once again relaxing in the Grand Salon, in preparation for the final treatment of my stay.

I had opted for the Green Tea Abdomen treatment. This treatment makes some bold claims – “Get the Tummy you deserve! Can’t face the thought of stripping off to your swimwear because of bloating and water retention? Help is at hand in the form of Green

Tea Abdomen Treatment. As well as relaxing the colon, it reduces fat and cellulite. Skin is buffed, slathered in cream and gel, massaged and enveloped in mask-sheer bliss. Experience this non-invasive colonic treatment that has a dual action that treats both the internal digestive system and firms the skin on the outside. You will be left looking firm and feeling relieved of tension and bloating. The Green tea mask has an extraordinary capacity to reduce excess liquids combined with a unique massage.” Ok bold claims but would it work?

Once again the therapist, this time Sarah took the time to

explain all about the treatment. The treatment was actually quiet relaxing and while Sarah was waiting for the green tea mask to set I was treated to a foot massage, very enjoyable. But did it work? Well I did feel a bit slimmer for a couple of days after the treatment.

Although I had to check out of my room by 10 am the hotel is happy for guests to stay and use the facilities on the day of check out. I could not resist a few more hours in the spa, alternating between the saunas and the hydro pool.

Finally I had to make a decision to leave. I had set out 24 hours earlier as a stressed out and tense businessman. Walking out of the hotel, I felt like I had been away for a few days and not just overnight. The whole experience had induced me to relax, recharge, refresh and rejuvenate myself.

A 1 night break at the Malvern Spa Including accommodation, dinner and bed & breakfast, and 1 x 55 minute treatment per person and use of the extensive spa facilities cost £133.50 Sunday – Thursday - £145.00 Friday & Saturday - per person.

We all need more space. But what can you do, you wonder, gazing around at your four walls/partner/children/parent/dog? Well, given that you don’t want to lose the partner/children/parent/dog (most of the time, at least), you could move. According to a leading property website, the selling price for property in and around the Enfield area has increased by 89% since 2006, which is quite a lot. On the other hand, the number of properties sold since then has dropped by 59% and the price of the property you want to buy has also gone up, so, with mortgages being harder to come by the conclusion is inescapable: fewer people are moving.

It also costs a small fortune to move. Add up mortgage application fees, surveyors’ costs, estate agents commission, removal costs, legal fees, Stamp Duty and VAT, selling a small flat and buying a modest home could

easily cost you £20,000 or more.

Yet we still need more room. So what to do? Do you move, or improve? Look up. Not for inspiration (although that’s good, too.) Look up. See anything up there, like a loft, for instance? If, like me, you have never stepped foot in your loft, which is exclusively a male zone in which my role each January 6th is to hand up the Christmas decorations to my husband to put away for another year, well, think again. You may just have found what you’re looking for… With staying in being the new going out, loft conversions are the solution many home owners have been looking for. They look sensational and give loads more room to put your stuff/partner/children/parent/dog. Plus which, depending on where you live, they can add up to 15-20% to the value of your property. Converted, yet? Econoloft is a long-established family company that works across the country on loft conversions, and they advise that the top five loft conversions are:• Master bedroom with ensuite facilities (you can get away from the children/parent/dog)• Bedroom (see above)• Home office (you can keep the dog if you opt for this one)Teen space/den (lose the kids and the dog will make up its own mind)• Home cinema (just you and Darth Vadar, lightsaber to lightsaber)

We asked Becke Livesey from Econloft what things homeowners should consider before opting for a loft conversion.

“First check the headroom in your loft,” said Becke. “This will determine the type and size of loft conversion that will be possible.”

“Next comes the paperwork. While planning consent is not always needed – building regulations will be as your loft conversion will be a habitable room such as a bedroom, study or playroom. Econoloft will make an application to Enfield Council, or to an approved independent regulatory body (an approved inspector) before

any work is started. “

“This will also take into account important energy efficiency, fire safety and party wall considerations. Econoloft carry out over 300 loft conversions every year and so has a lot of experience in this field. We can cover all the necessary paperwork including building regulations, planning, local committees and any licenses that may be necessary.”

Fortunately, Econoloft report that getting the necessary approvals is straight forward in most cases and special consideration is only usually necessary in conservation areas. In this area you can expect the paperwork to take

between four to eight weeks before building work can start.

Becke adds: “An extra bedroom and ensuite remains the most popular loft conversion especially in areas of the country where prices are at a premium. Making your three bedroom home a four bedroom home can add anything up to 15 - 20% percent to the value of your property, depending on where you live.”

Once you’ve decided what you’re going to use your extra space for, you need to consider the practicalities. If you’re opting for an extra bedroom, bear in mind that heat rises, and a room at the top of the house can become warm. Vic Smith of Vic Smith Beds advises, ‘Steer clear of memory foam, which is often used in cheaper beds. After all, would you wrap yourself in foam on a hot day, and then try to sleep without expecting to wake up hot, sweaty and unrested? I would always recommend buying a properly constructed bed and mattress that use techniques to allow the

upholstery to air and breathe, leading to a cooler sleeping environment and more restful sleep.’ If you decide to have a home office in your new-found space, you’re going to need storage for files and paperwork. Cupboards can be the answer here, and Designer Kitchens in Potters Bar can help. (Yes, we are suggesting a kitchen shop here, because cupboards don’t only have to be for cups in kitchens.) For those who want a den or home cinema, comfortable furniture is paramount. Furncrafts in Enfield have an extensive range of suites in a variety of styles, sizes and finishes to fit into any size of room. Many of their sofas can be delivered in sections and are put together in your room by the Furncrafts team, which is very useful in a smaller room where access can be restricted. Flooring in your loft conversion is another decision to make. John Powell (he of the eponymous John Powell Carpets) says ‘When you’re

considering a carpet, you need to think of what the space will be used for.’ Areas of heavy use, such as a hall, stairs, landing or living room will need something that can withstand a certain degree of wear. John recommends an 80% wool/20% man-made Twist or Velvet carpet. For a softer, plush feel that your tootsies will find cosy and comforting, a Super Luxury Saxony Carpet with a luxuriously thick pile is ideal for use in a bedroom. ‘For a loft conversion,’ John advises, ‘it’s very important to make sure you have the correct amount of underlay to help soundproof the room. This is especially important when choosing a wooden or laminate floor. If you’re planning to use your loft conversion as a home cinema, consider a deep pile carpet, which will help with sound-proofing and will also be comfortable if you or your guests end up sitting on the floor.’ Your loft conversion will need an important element: windows. Julia Sondack of Drapemasters says, ‘Loft windows fall into three main categories. Firstly there are Skylight windows. These are the windows situated on the sloped roof of your loft. The two main manufacturers of these are Velux and Rotor, both of which use a code to identify the window size. When you give this code to your interior furnisher, they will advise you on the options available. Generally, these will be Roller blinds, Venetian blinds or Pleated blinds. ‘Dormer windows are recessed. Roman blinds work particularly well, as do the aforementioned varieties. If

the recess is deep enough, it may also be possible to have curtains on dormer rods. The fabric is made up with a slotted or gathered heading through which the rods are

placed. Unlike normal curtains, they don’t open or close, but remain fitted on the rods, which are hinged and swung back against the recess walls in order to let the light in. ‘Inward opening doors call for perfect fit blinds. These are a great option, as the blinds are mounted on a frame which fits against the beading inside the glass panels, which means there is no obstruction or clatter when opening and closing them. Many blind manufacturers produce both vertical and roller blinds in the same fabrics, thus creating a seamless tie-in with your skylight windows. For a simple,

contemporary look, eyelets on a pole are superb, as they stack neatly to the sides, diminishing the issue of obstruction when opening your doors.’ So the choice of should I stay or should I go might just be an easier decision to make than you first thought. Now where did I put the dog?

Continue to harvest your courgettes or they will quickly develop into over large and less tasty marrows. Continued picking will also promote further cropping. If you have squash and pumpkin plants protect the fruit by lifting them off the damp ground and placing them on a layer of straw or on old tiles, this will prevent the side in contact with the soil from going mouldy or discolouring and will help them ripen. Remember they are greedy plants so give them a good feed with liquid tomato food, especially if you are aiming for a prize winning Halloween pumpkin.

It is not too late to sow some vegetables outside. For really

quick and tasty results why not try mixed salad leaves. I sow these in large pots and lightly cover with compost, instead of allowing them to mature as individual lettuces I let them grow all together and cut individual leaves as I need them for salads. I Like mixtures with mustard or rocket for a bit of peppery bite; they are also really quick growing reducing the time from seed packet to plate to a few weeks. Some of the mixtures are really colourful and make attractive pots on the patio.

Despite a very difficult year it is time to think about what to do with any gluts of produce so as not to let all your hard work go to waste. One of my favourite ways to deal with gluts of tomatoes is to make batches of tomato ketchup. However if you are more culinary gifted and adventurous, or if you think you have a prize winning Jam or Champion Chutney

then why not enter it into Capel Manor’s Taste of Autumn Show. The domestic classes are just a small part of the fun Horticultural Show, where we also have Chilli tasting, apple pressing, and cooking demonstrations running throughout the day. It is a great day out and a great opportunity to learn how to grow your own and to see Capel Manor Gardens

in their late season splendour. I hope to see you on 29th and 30th of September.

Some flower beds may be finishing flowering at the moment but with some careful deadheading repeated flushes of flowers can be encouraged. By removing the spent flower-heads of perennials like Penstemons, red hot pokers and Dahlias, they should flower right through to the first heavy frosts. The plant is tricked into producing more flowers in order to reproduce through seed, and also tidies the general appearance of individual plants and your borders as a whole. Potted Pelargoniums and roses should also be deadheaded continuously and given a boost this time of year by feeding with a liquid fertiliser; I find tomato feed is ideal to replace nutrients taken from the compost throughout the growing season.

If you are after some late season colour why not fill gaps with late flowering perennials. Asters or michaelmas daisies flower well into the autumn and are available in a wide variety of pastels shades try Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’, it is a tall, reliable, blue variety. Penstemons are great late season flowers as are the rudbeckias; try Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Deamii’, its cheerful, yellow daisy like flowers add a bit of late season zing to the borders. All of these perennials combine really well with ornamental grasses. These attractive plants are becoming increasingly popular within the garden and provide height and movement

throughout the border. Most types are in flower now and the flowerheads and foliage should be left to provide winter structure. Panicum and Imperata have glossy, often colourful foliage, and Miscanthus provide very tall plumes of feather like flowers. All prefer full sun and are simply cut back to the ground in spring before growth starts much like you would with many other herbaceous perennials.

Now is the time to be planning your bulb displays for the spring, these bulbs should be planted in the autumn. This year I will be planting massed displays of tulips and grape hyacinths or muscari as bedding displays and a wide range of Alliums and dwarf reticulated irises in my borders. When planting your bulbs always plant them at three times their own depth, this can be deeper than you expect especially when planting large daffodil bulbs. This deep planting will help your bulbs flower year on year and help to deter nuisance animals like squirrels and mice. Remember to plant a few containers with bulbs now to place on your patio or throughout the flowerbeds when they are in flower in the spring, but for now sit back, relax and wait for their spring display.
