Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has welcomed the declaration of Red Hands Cave at Glenbrook as an Aboriginal Place in recognition of its cultural, social and historic significance of the site to the Aboriginal community.

Stuart Ayres said the 12 metre-high Red Hands Cave – situated in Blue Mountains National Park – was named in recognition of the red, orange and white stencils of aboriginal people’s hands which decorate the cave.

“There are 45 hand markings, both left and right hands, and some children’s hand markings,” Stuart Ayres said.

“The site is a ceremonial cave which was used for the initiation of young warriors. Extraordinary Service25 years...a quarter of a century...Silver Anniversary...no

matter how you say it, it’s a long time and something that the Lions Club of Emu Plains thinks is extraordinary service.

On the 4th July, Emu Plains Lions member, Bob Baines of Kingswood, ‘clocked up’ 25 years service with the Club. He ‘celebrated’, as usual, by assisting on the Lions chocolate wheel, at Westfi eld Plaza, along with his fellow members from Emu Plains and other local clubs, just one of the many activities he has undertaken during his service.

Bob, aged 69, was born in Yorkshire, UK. He was a volunteer early in his life; from 19 to 21 years old, in the UK Civil Defence. His life story typifi es his enduring quality; 32 years with 3M before retiring and his marriage to Pat for 48 years. Bob’s pride is his family; daughters Michelle and Melanie and especially his close bond to his 4 grandchildren; Chloe, Corey, Jorja and Dale.

Emu Plains Club President, Ian West said, ”Bob is the epitome of what I think a volunteer is. Selfl ess, unassuming, hard working, and always willing to help without seeking glory or headlines.”

Club ‘veteran’ John Choma, himself with 40 years service, added “Bob is a well respected and valuable member of our Club, and is always willing to put his hand up to support the clubs activities and projects. Bob has served as President for 3 terms, Secretary for 2 terms and been a member on most committees within our club. Bob’s service to the community is also evident with his involvement with the Penrith Community Kitchen, where he has served as President over a number of years.”

Bob also volunteers in acting as a tour guide on the James Craig, the tall ship at Darling Harbour!!!! Great job, Bob!

Debt Crisis! We’re hearing a lot at the moment about the Greek Debt Crisis.

How terrible to be in so much debt, you knew you could never pay it back! It happens to countries, it can happen to people. It would keep you awake at night. It’d feel like you’re struggling to keep your head above water. Imagine if someone were to say ‘I’ll pay’, even if it were to cost them a fortune.

Jesus explained his reason for coming in terms of debt too. Only he was talking about our debt toward God.

One day Jesus was face to face with two people, a woman who knew her debt had been paid, the other a man who didn’t think he had a debt. What stood out between the two? The woman loved Jesus because she knew how great was her debt, and how precious was his forgiveness. The man, he was pretty so-so about Jesus, because he didn’t think he even had a problem (Luke 7:36-50)

If we’re completely honest with ourselves we know we fall short of what’s morally right. Sure, not all the time, but what if any time was enough to rack up a debt we could never pay back. We could ignore it, or feel guilty about it, but wouldn’t it be wonderful to have it forgiven? Jesus said ‘I’ll pay’, even though it cost him a fortune. He put it this way, ‘Your sins are forgiven’. It cost him his own life but he willingly gave it.

I expect the Greek Debt Crisis will still be in the news a while longer, though maybe there’ll be a generous write down of their debt. Jesus probably won’t be in the headlines, but his off er is the best news there is! Want to know more? We’d love to lend a hand, why not get in contact.

The sun still rises and sets every day, day after day. The sun produces energy.No-one taxes sunlight (yet!).

Government Rebates

There are very attractive rebates in the form of STC’s available to you which are generally given at point of sale that bring the price of a typical 4.0kw system down to around $5,000.00. That is double the size and less than the price than 2011. Feed-In Tariff s

These are very much smaller than those off ered a few years ago and now tend to be around $0.05 per kWh.

But we don’t sell it now we use what we produce.Electricity Costs

Electricity now costs between $0.23 and $0.26 per kWhr. It is common knowledge that this will continue to rise in the future.

In 2011 the same electricity cost $0.18 per kWhr resulting in an increase of over 30% in four years. How Do We Measure Your Solar Requirements?

There are three main characteristics that determine the size of the system you require;

• Current electricity usage.• Available Roof space.• Your budget.Call me now to start saving on your electricity! (See ad above).

Little Big Dash Comes to Sydney: 10 Fun Obstacles Over 3 Kms!

Photos: www.facebook.com/littlebigdash

Sanitarium Health & Wellbeing announced that Little BIG DASH will be held in Sydney for the first time on Sunday 23 August 2015, following a successful launch in Brisbane.

Little BIG DASH is an obstacle adventure full of colour, fun and guaranteed laughs designed for families to enjoy getting active together.

Thousands of ‘Dashers’, in parent and child teams, are anticipated to go wild over a three kilometre course at Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.

Parent-child teams of two to six members will explore ten colourful obstacle stages together, including dancing through the Donut Dash, dodging the Big Blob Balls, navigating through the Bubble Blast and tackling the giant Rumble Tumble Tower, and a new inflatable Footy Frenzy stage.

Australian Cricket Legend Brett Lee said he was delighted to be the ambassador for Little BIG DASH.

“I'm a big kid at heart and this event gives me the opportunity to release that inner-child while having heaps of fun with the children.”

“Each stage of Little BIG DASH is designed to bring so much enjoyment for parent and child that the exercise sharing is incidental,” said Lee.

At the final Hand Stand, ‘Dashers’ create a unique memento by exchanging hand prints in fun patterns on their Little BIG DASH shirts.

Every ‘Dasher’ will receive official Little BIG DASH merchandise items, including an official Little BIG DASH cap (received at check-in), and a shirt for the handprint memento (received at the Hand Stand).

Children aged between 5 and 15 years old can be entered by their parent. There must be at least one adult registered in a team for every two children. Team size ranges from two members to six. Full price team entry fee ranges from $95 (two-person team) to $265 (six-person team) including GST and processing fee with generous early bird and special discounts on offer. Enter EARLY for best discounts.

“There will be prizes for dressing up – so we encourage all ‘Dashers’ to find some fun and quirky matching outfits to wear!” said Lee.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to share a fun-filled adventure with your family! Register today at www.littlebigdash.com.au

Preschool

I have been travelling around the community recently, meeting and chatting with parents. It has been great to hear what parents think about their role as parents, the joys and the struggles. And we all know that there are a lot of both.

I also get a lot of enquiries from parents over the phone or via email, who are confused about what services are available to them. This month, I am listing some of the frontline support services that are available in the community to address your concerns, whatever level they may be.

Who do you go to if you have a few specifi c concerns – the baby is not sleeping well, your 2 year-old is not sharing, your 4 year-old still doesn’t have a friend at preschool, your 7 year-old is too focused on screens, etc ?

• Early Childhood Health clinics provide support with infant feeding and parenting, and developmental screening.

• Karitane Careline 1300 227 464 7 days per week, regarding the care of young children

• Tresillian Parents Help Line 1300 272736 7 days per week, regarding children aged 0 to 5 years

• ParentLine – 1300 1300 52, 7 days per week, regarding children up to 18 years

• Facebook and Blogs – social media is prolifi c. Check the qualifi cations of the person running the sites you are getting your advice from. I recently saw a video post on Facebook get thousands of ‘likes’ where the parent was clearly abandoning and laughing at her distressed child – horrifi c. Some good sites are Dr Justin Coulson, Dr Laura Markham, Dr Beth Onufrak, and Dr Darci Walker (Core Parenting) – note the ‘Dr’ in front of each of these names.

You seem to be struggling with quite a few things. You may be yelling at the kids more often than you like. You and your partner may be arguing about how best to parent. You may not be confi dent in your skills as a parent. Or you just want to update your skills and learn more.

• Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) has quite a few options available. You can attend a free Triple P group which will go for approximately two hours per week for 5 to 6 weeks. Triple P is also available online for those parents who can’t attend a group, and it costs$80. Penrith Community Health off ers Triple groups in the evening. NCNS off ers Teen Triple P.

• The ‘Resourcing Parents’ website lists the parenting services available to parents throughout NSW. Go to http://www.resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/.

• Penrith Community Health off ers counselling for parents, children, and young people. The intake phone number is 1800 222 608.

There is no shame in asking for support or assistance. Parenting is a tough job. Children are complex. You think you have them all fi gured out and then they grow into another stage with a whole new set of challenges. As a grandmother of 6 said to me recently “it never hurts to learn more, and connect with others who are going through the same thing as you”.

Next month, I will list the services available to parents who are concerned that their child may have a disability or disorder.

Glenbrook’s Red Hands Cave Site Declared An Aboriginal Placeplatform and barriers to prevent people from touching the cave’s surface.

The gazettal of Red Hands Cave as an Aboriginal Place will ensure that the site is looked after under a plan of management, reducing the risk of further degradation of the site.”

Stuart Ayres said the latest declaration by the Environment and heritage Minister Mark Speakman reaffirmed that the NSW Government is committed to the recognition and conservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage.

“By declaring these significant lands as Aboriginal Places, we recognise and acknowledge that Aboriginal culture is living and continuing, and that the connection of Aboriginal people to the land and culture is immensely important to their wellbeing and future,” Stuart Ayres said.

The declaration of an Aboriginal Place does not change the status of the land or affect ownership rights. However, a person must not harm or desecrate an Aboriginal Place.

Penrith’s New Visitor Guide Has LandedPenrith Council has produced a new Visitor Guide which

provides a comprehensive list of things to see and do in Penrith. The 2015 Visitor Guide profi les the Adventure Capital and the

wide range of attractions, activities and events in Penrith. It also includes useful information on how to get around the City and places to eat and stay.

More than 1.3 million people visit Penrith each year and inject $231 million into the local economy. Penrith City Mayor Councillor Ross Fowler OAM said the Visitor Guide is an important marketing tool to help to boost these fi gures.

“Visitor Guides continue to be incredibly popular with people researching and planning an upcoming trip, so we put a lot of time and eff ort into making it a great selling tool for Penrith, “Cr Fowler said.

“The latest edition of our Visitor Guide is by far the best yet. It’s full of vibrant new images, and contains updated content, links to our website and social media pages and maps to direct visitors across the City.

“We’ve also categorised our activities and attractions into four new adventure categories: Action-packed, Laid-back, Outdoor and Eats and treats

“These categories make it easier for people to identify the type of experience they want when they come to Penrith.

“The growth of adventure tourism has infl uenced the overall look and feel of the new Visitor Guide, with the adventure theme continuing in the imagery, graphic design and language of the document.

“Research from Tourism Australia shows that visitors want to move away from the traditional tourist route, they want to challenge themselves and expose themselves to unique experiences.

“Whatever type of adventure they’re after, we’re confi dent visitors will fi nd it in Penrith. Best of all, they’ll be able to read all about it in our new Visitor Guide and use it to research and plan their next adventure.”

The Visitor Guide will be available at Penrith City Council, Penrith City Library and at visitor centres across NSW. It will also be available to view and download online from: www.visitpenrith.com.au

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an infl ammatory arthritis of the spine and other joints. It aff ects up to 2% of Australians, is three times more common in men than women & usually appears between 15 and 45 years.1

AS starts with pain & stiff ness in the sacroiliac (SI) joint (between the spine & pelvis) but can aff ect other areas of the spine, the hips, shoulders, eyes, skin, bowel, chest & even lungs. Eventually the whole axial skeleton of a person with long term AS can become fused. 2

Nobody really knows why people get AS, but the overwhelming evidence suggests that people inherit susceptibility genes from their parents, then get AS via an infection, that alters bowel function leading to immune dysregulation and autoimmunity. 3

Ninety percent of people with AS have a gene called HLA-B27. 3 HLA-B27 is a perfectly normal gene found in 8% of the general population and no more than 2% of people born with this gene ever get spondylitis. So the gene itself does not cause spondylitis, but people with HLA-B27 are simply more susceptible to getting spondylitis. 4

People with AS often have what looks like ‘Crohn’s disease’ -

bloody ulcers in the intestines with cramping and diarrhea. 3 The medical literature lists at least 14 diff erent micro-organisms which can act as possible triggers and though still controversial, it is thought by many, that infection with these organisms can lead to gastro-intestinal changes, triggering commencement of AS symptoms. 3

Currently, there is no known cure for ankylosing spondylitis5, but various medications such as analgesics, anti-infl ammatories, bisphosphonates and drugs called DMARDs & bDMARDS are used by doctors to reduce symptoms and manage the pain. 2

At the clinic we have had some success in treating people with AS by determining & treating possible infective organisms, altering diet to optimize nutrition and immunity, then using adjunct treatments including massage & dry needling to reduce infl ammation and remove the need for ongoing AS medications. If you’d like to know more see my advert above in this paper, and give me a call at the clinic.

5 Tips to Help with the Death of Your PetOur pets are part of the family and we love them dearly. They’re

companions, confi dants and comforters. Playing a huge part in our daily routine. After all they are, “Man’s Best Friend”.

My dog is all of these things and more. He has an entertaining personality and energetic spirit. At the vet recently I was informed that he’s 10 years old. I want him to be around forever. I thought about how I’m going to live without him, (I don’t want to think about that) and how grieving his loss will aff ect me.

The death of a pet is diffi cult. Here’s the tips!1. Gather your support network and tell your pet stories; show

photos; have a ceremony etc. Pet loss is diffi cult because they love you unconditionally; they sit, listening to your woes without judgment.

2. Create a memorial. Buy a statue or build a garden. Something tangible will help you remember your precious pet.

3. Tough times: like walking in the door after work and your pet isn’t there to greet you (like they do every night); at feeding time; when you walked or played with them. Recognise triggers and distract yourself by reading a book, calling a friend or having a bath.

4. Emotional times: People don’t realize how painful the sight of a leash or bowl might be. You don’t have to pack their things away immediately. Measure how you respond to seeing their belongings and only put them away when you feel you can (without any regret)

5. You’re not crazy!: Some people think that they are easily replaceable. Know that not everyone will understand your grief, so be with the people who do.

No Doesn’t Always Mean NoBanks assess loan applications based on a complex series of criterion known as

Credit Policy and as I’ve written before Credit Policies are constantly changing. Not only that, Credit Policies can vary greatly from one bank to the next.

Things like your income, type of income, expenses, liabilities, children, purpose of loan, savings history, credit record, even whether you are single, married or defacto are considered along with dozens of other factors to determine if a loan will be approved and how much can be borrowed.

Concerned about the high level of investor activity in the market, the banking watchdog APRA (the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority) has been warning the banks to reduce the number of investment loans that they are approving or face the introduction of tougher lending regulations.

To keep APRA happy, most of the Banks have now made changes to their Credit Policies making it tougher to get a loan. Unfortunately, many people think that if their bank declines their loan or won’t lend them the amount that they need, they think that all banks are the same.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Due to the differing Credit Policies some banks will lend where others wont. Some banks will lend hundreds of thousands more than others. Then there are the non-bank lenders over whom APRA has no authority.

At Great Aussie Dream, we go to great lengths to stay up to date with the latest Credit Policies so that we can provide our clients with the right finance that suits their needs. If you’ve been knocked back by your bank or want to avoid a rejection, give us a call on 4733 8592.
