Empowerment Connection - Fall/Winter 2014TRANSCRIPT
For 95 years Easter Seals Michigan has been committed to serving the community; it’s what drives us to make the decisions we make. Recently, we learned of an opportunity to fulfill a long standing need for our services in the western Oakland county area. With the full support and backing of our partner the Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority, we have opened a new location in Walled Lake that offers children and adult services.
Our doors opened on October 1 and we have already met many wonderful people in the community that have welcomed us into their neighborhood. For more information, please go to essmichigan.org or call 1.800.75.SEALS.
The new location is at 1010 E. West Maple Road, Walled Lake, MI 48390.

The camp was a huge success and everyone had a blast.

Spotlight On... Spotlight On...TrevorTrevor Joe CastineJoe Castine
If you live in southeastern Michigan then you probably know Trevor from his Fox 2 piece that ran numerous times in August. Trevor recently started coming to Easter Seals Michigan to assist him with a sensory processing disorder, something very common with children on the autism spectrum. Through our occupational therapy program he is learning how to understand his feelings and put them into words instead of actions. Since coming to Easter Seals Michigan, Trevor feels that because of the services he receives, he can do whatever he puts his mind to, and he has proven that with the many things he has already accomplished. His family has also noticed a big difference in the way Trevor handles tough situations and feel that the skills that he is learning are going to help him as he grows into an adult.
Recently our very own Joe Castine won the Esther Dean Callard award from the Michigan Association of Infant Mental Health, Metro Detroit Chapter. Esther Dean Callard devoted her life to the study of what children need to grow into healthy adults. In 1996, Joe Castine was one of a team of two infant mental health clinicians serving all of Oakland County. Through building relationships, education and advocating for individuals that he served, Infant Mental Health became a service recognized and funded by Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority. He continues to show leadership through providing the screenings and eligibility for all children 0-6 years old in Oakland County.
The quality of his involvement is best described by a quote from a parent whose child has benefitted from Joe’s work; “We are so lucky! Finding Joe Castine was seriously like winning the lotto!” Those of us so fortunate to work with Joe Castine would agree!

RAISE GrantAwarded to ESM
Easter Seals Michigan has been awarded a $214,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Community Health that will allow us to provide a new, innovative program specifically focusing on early intervention for people with schizophrenia. Because of its focus on early intervention, it is considered a ground-breaking program in the mental health field, and was developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The program began in October and we are excited about this new opportunity to address the needs of the community.
