—Brad SmithExecutive Vice President and General Counsel, Microsoft¹

Security threats are top of mind for everyone

nowadays, and they can pose a huge challenge

to productivity. In the past, businesses went for

the lockdown approach, tightening access to

applications, file shares, and corporate networks

and keeping everything on-premises—even

people. Increasingly, as corporate apps move

to the cloud and as employees rely on mobile

devices to stay productive from anywhere,

businesses are recognizing the tremendous

opportunities available from connected

technologies. But even as businesses see the

value of how this digital transformation is

shaping new possibilities, they still let one thing

slow them down—fear.

You can’t let fear slow you down.

“We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and related to one another. In its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced before.”

—Klaus SchwabFounder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, January 2016⁷

Pervasive access to new digital services changes every aspect of business—

shaping growth, disrupting industry landscapes, and providing the catalyst

for new business models, products, services, and experiences for businesses

to transform themselves into digital businesses.

But along with the opportunities, businesses also face serious challenges.

Consider this:

• Employees—sometimes not even in the same office or even the same

country—work on nearly twice the number of teams than they did five

years ago².

• Mobile business apps are increasingly changing the way work gets

done³.

• Information overload wastes 25% of employees’ time—and costs the

US economy alone $997 billion each year⁴.

• Over 160 million customer records were compromised in 2015⁵.

• It can take businesses up to 229 days to detect security infiltrations⁶.

The world is changing fast. And that can be scary.

—Luc HennekensChief Information Officer, Qantas⁸

in a digital world, and not just in the way of

cyber threats and stolen customer data. They

have to strive to create a flexible, collaborative

environment to attract the best talent to keep

products and services relevant. They’re also

tasked with managing mobile productivity of

their people that use a myriad of devices and

apps to get work done in the office, at home, or

on the road. And they worry about information

overload—ensuring they have the latest, most

relevant data-driven insights to drive the most

strategic decisions. That’s why Microsoft delivers

business propositions, run through spreadsheets, and participate in meetings

from customer stores or even locations with bad cell reception. We’re using

modern technology to make decisions, changes, and updates in real time, without

having to be physically together. That helps us quickly create new offerings and

marketing campaigns that really resonate with consumers.”
