Employment Times's new Central/Northern Maine editionTRANSCRIPT
Good with your hands? OPPORTUNITIES NOW!
Ever hit the door of a networking
event and just freeze? All those happy
smiling people standing there waiting
for something brilliant to come out of
your mouth and suddenly you are
completely thrown off your game. So
you do one of three things, you
immediately look for someone you
know and quickly engage them in
conversation, or you stand there like
the nerd at high school dance with no
one to talk to, or worse yet you walk up
to strangers introduce yourself and
spend the next fifteen minutes talking
a mile a minute about absolutely
nothing. Believe me we have all been
there.
Yes, networking can be intimidating
and at times a little overwhelming.
However, I believe no skill produces a
better return on investment than
networking when it comes to growing
your business. It is well worth your
time and investment to learn how to
make your networking fun, easy and
incredibly productive.
Let me let you in on a few little
secrets: Networking is a skill that needs
to be learned (I don’t believe anyone is
a natural networker); Networking is a
skill that anyone can learn and be good
at; and Networking holds the key to
helping you be successful in any
economy. So how do you network
effectively? How do you network so
that it is fun, easy and productive?
First, Make A Plan!
I want you to sit down and think
about networking before you do it. So
many of us have no rhyme or reason as
to why and how we choose our
networking events, how we determine
who we need to meet, and what we
ultimately hope to achieve. If you want

Once you’ve chosen a style
(formal, informal,
professional, elegant, etc.)
you’ll need to make sure you
have dates for all the
positions you’ve held that you
intend to include. A good
rule of thumb to follow is to
list the last ten years of
employment unless you have
had more than five positions
in those ten years. If you
have had five positions in the
last five or six years then list
only those, but be prepared
to answer questions from
your interviewer on why you
have “job hopped” so much.
The interviewer may not use
that term exactly, but that is
what they are thinking, so
have a good answer ready.

your networking to be effective, then
you need to first know why you are
networking. What do you want to gain
and what are your goals? Do you need
new clients, better relationships with
existing clients, a new job, better job,
people to go mountain biking with? It
doesn't matter what your purpose is,
you just need to know it so you can
choose the right events with the right
people.
Networking is most effective when
your purpose aligns with your event.
Make sure the events you choose to
attend put you in direct contact with
the type of people who can help you
achieve your purpose.
Second, Make An Impression!
Your goal with networking is to make
an impression - a positive one. You
want people to want to know you and
want to talk with you. That all begins
with how we look, how we introduce
ourselves, and the value of our
conversation. It all begins with our
personal brand.
Professional dress, a smile and great
eye contact will make you appear
confident and approachable. Your
introduction should not only help
people understand what you do, but at
the same time ensure you standout
from your competitors, and your
conversation needs to be 80 percent
listening and 20 percent asking
questions. Asking questions and
listening is how we establish trust early
on, and how we identify ways we can
add value and take the relationship to
the next level. Remember, networking
is not about you. You're there to listen
and learn about others.
Third, Make It Count!
Networking is a beginning not an end.
You need to know what your next steps
are before you leave an event. Then
within 24-hours you need to follow-up
on those next steps and take action.
Remember your second or even third
meeting with a networking contact is
NOT a sales call. You're still building
the relationship and determining if you
can be of service. Focus your second
and third calls on adding value.
Follow these three steps - Make a
Plan, Make an Impression, and Make
It Count - and watch your networking
become fun easy and productive.
Watch your prospects turn into
customers!

ARA – When you start a small
business, you’ll probably discover that
what you learned in business school
doesn’t cover everything you need to
know as a business leader.
That’s what Michael Alter,
SurePayroll president and CEO,
discovered during his 10 years leading
the company. He’s put together five tips
for growing a small business that you
probably won’t learn in business school:
1. Don't be afraid to make newmistakes.
Mistakes are one of the most valuable
learning tools I’ve ever come across.
You can’t learn anything if you’re afraid
to try something new, or worried about
letting your staff do things differently.
As a small business owner, you can’t
afford to fall victim to “the paralysis of
analysis.” That doesn’t mean you
should change how you run an aspect
of your business without doing your
due diligence. But the longer you wait
to try something new, the longer you'll
wait to learn something your
competitors might already know.
Develop a culture where you and your
employees feel comfortable trying
something new and embracing an
entrepreneurial spirit. “At SurePayroll,
we give a ‘Best New Mistake’ award
that’s our equivalent to the Presidential
Medal of Freedom. The winner walks
away with $400—the largest prize we
issue to any employee,” Alter says.
You’ll be pleasantly surprised how
much you learn, and how
entrepreneurial your employees can be,
when you give them the freedom to err.
2. Saying “no” to new business is oneof your most powerful assets.
Taking on new challenges and doing
practically everything yourself is the
hallmark of a small business owner. But
rather than accepting every new
opportunity that looks like it might be
helpful with your business, start saying
"no" to things that aren’t strategically
aligned with your business.
Be sure “no” is part of your vocabulary
so you can say “yes” to focusing on your
core business.
3. Use negatives as positives.
You may never have the big marketing
budgets, huge cash flow, or large
infrastructure that your big competitors
will. Most people will tell you that's a
negative you’ll have to overcome (or a
“challenge” you have to overcome, if
they’re being nice). Rather, think of it
as a positive – an opportunity you need

Mastering a Culture Fit InterviewBy C. A. Stapleton
The central goal of any job interview is to
enable an interviewer to appraise a job
candidate’s potential to culturally fit into
their organization. Recruiters and hiring
managers make every effort to identify the
right candidates for an organization, and
one of the most important criterion is to
align the applicant to the company
customs or uncover a mismatch.
Many questionnaires are designed to
determine the characteristics of the ideal
candidate for the organization. During the
interview, interaction is a key element to
candidate selection. Applicants of any age
must fully exhibit that they not only meet
the qualifications for the position, but also
that they are a good match, culturally, with
the company's existing environment.
In the world of employment, the daily
work environment of an organization
envelops employees with its culture. By
some definitions, a company’s way of life
encompasses the congruent principles,
viewpoints, modes, and activities shared by
the group of people who work there. Like
individuals, companies have values too.
Traditionally, company culture and values
is defined by its founder, its leaders, and its
management staff. Therefore, hiring
managers want to identify the “best fit” for
their climate – such as formal and
conservative, or the opposite.
Personal values are an integral part of the
culture fit interview process. These values
can range from creativity and innovation
to communication abilities. A culture fit
interview will be designed to include
personality characteristic probing
questions. An example would be “What
do you want out of your life?”
The culture fit interview is deliberately
designed to find out about your work style
and how it fits the company. An example
would be “Are you a team oriented person
or do you prefer to work alone?” If you are
a person who prefers to work alone most
of the time, then you would not fit into a
“team work” filled environment.
Culture fit interviews can also be tied
directly to competency by incorporating
culture based questions into a competency
model interview. This type of type of
practice matches the grouped
competencies desired by the company with
the candidate’s grouped competencies.
Competency models are constructed from
the corporation’s culture or desired – such
as customer service abilities and team
work.
Unfortunately, there are not right or
wrong answers to questions given in a
culture fit interview. So, it is best to answer
each question with the personal
characteristics – viewpoints, ethics, and
standards that best suit you.

Workshops offer to strengthen Maine's nonprofit leadershipAUGUSTA, ME — The Maine Arts
Commission is offering a series of free
board development and leadership
workshops throughout the state to
bolster the strength and effectiveness
of Maine’s nonprofit arts and cultural
organizations.
Board members, leaders and directors
from cultural organizations are invited
to attend the workshops that begin on
September 8 in Portland and move on
to Norway, Lewiston, Bangor, Belfast,
Presque Isle and Camden.
With funding from the National
Endowment for the Arts, the Maine
Arts Commission has organized this
series of workshops to address both
board development and the training of
future leaders within organizations.
The all day workshops will be led by
Tony Scucci, a senior governance
consultant with Board Source, who has
worked with clients such as the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting
and the American Red Cross.
“Board members want to feel like they
are making a real difference rather than
attending meetings that turn out to be
spectator sports,” said Scucci. “The
workshops I am presenting will take
participants beyond the basics roles
and responsibilities; it will explore
creative ways for boards of cultural
organizations to bring greater value to
their organizations, and for individual
board members to feel truly valued for
their time and talent.”
With over 35 years in the nonprofit
sector, Scucci has a deep understanding
of the issues that can arise between an
organization and their board. “We
have all been to board meetings that
end up as “bored” meetings,” said
Scucci. “It is my goal to have
participants walking away with a
strong sense of purpose and knowledge
of how they – individually and as a
board - can make a real difference in
their corner of the cultural world.”
The Maine Arts Commission has
arranged five board development
workshops that take place at the
following times and locations:
• September 8, St. Lawrence Arts
Center, Portland
• September 9, Western Maine Art
Group, Matolscy Gallery, Norway
• October 19, University of Maine
Museum of Art, Bangor
• October 26, University of Maine,
Presque Isle
• October 27, Waterfall Arts Center,
Belfast
Additional leadership training
sessions will help participants
understand their own leadership
qualities and styles while providing
insight into the five core leadership
competencies. These sessions take
place at the following times and
locations.
• October 7, Olin Arts Center, Bates
College, Lewiston
• October 28, Camden Opera House,
Camden.
Participants are welcome to attend
both the board development and
leadership workshops; lunch will be
provided for all those in attendance.
Those interested should sign up soon
as space is limited. Full details,
including registration, for each
location can be found on

to seize.
Working with abundant resources is
always more cumbersome. When your
competitors want to change, they have
an army of employees to retrain,
technology to reprogram and at least a
few big wigs who’ll need to sign off on
it – usually after a lot of convincing.
As the owner of a small business, you
are able to change quickly. Use your
nimbleness to your advantage. Turning
your idea into a reality quickly is much
easier for you than for a colleague who
works at a large employer.
4. Play to your strengths, not yourweaknesses.
In past jobs your bosses probably tried
to help you by identifying skills or traits
you should improve when they
conducted your performance reviews.
But, time is the one resource you can
never get more of. So why waste time
trying to improve something you’re not
good at – and probably don’t have any
passion for – when you can outsource
your weaknesses?
If you’re buried in receipts and your
general ledger, struggling to keep the
books accurate, find an accountant or
bookkeeper so you can free up your
time to focus on growing your business.
If you’re great at selling your service or
product but can’t help customers with
questions, get a customer service
representative on board so you can
focus on what you’re best at.
When you’re in the middle of doing
something you hate, pass the buck to
someone else.
5. Use technology to improveeverything.
The advances in business technology
over the last 15 years have leveled the
playing field. With the right
technology, you can revolutionize how
your business and service works – and
even what your market expects.
Find the technology that can help you
improve operations and free your staff
to work on tasks that generate more
revenue. If your employees are still
digging through mounds of paper files
and different spreadsheets for customer
and prospect information, put
everything in a central online customer
relationship manager (CRM) solution
like SalesForce.com. And when your
employees are on the go, ensure they
have smartphones with apps (such as a
document and spreadsheet viewers)
they need to work from anywhere.
Smart technology investments always
produce a strong return on investment.
“Following these principles has helped
me in every step of my career,” says
Alter. “But they wouldn’t matter if I
didn't adhere to one overarching goal:
Keep learning and remaining open to
change. Markets change, consumers
change, needs change. You need to
provide the change businesses and
consumers demand.”

What to do if you've been laid off(ARA) — As the economy struggles to
recover, many American workers continue
to fear being laid off. And with good reason
– with millions of Americans still out of
work from one of the worst recessions in
U.S. history, the competition to find jobs is
fierce.
Regardless of your age, gender or the work
you do, it pays to prepare yourself in the
event that you are laid off. It’s critical to
understand what you should do in the
minutes, days and weeks after being told
that your job has been eliminated.
Here are some tips from FindLaw.com, a
legal-advice-and-information website, on
what you should do to increase your odds
of getting back to work in the event of a
layoff.
Don’t wait
If layoff rumors are running rampant
throughout your organization, don't wait to
find out if you're part of the headcount or
not. Instead, be proactive. Get your resume
updated and in shape. Identify three to five
people who might be good job references
and invite them out for coffee to reignite
your relationships. Start looking at various
online job boards, attend local professional
society meetings - do anything you can
think of to kick-start your networking into
high gear.
Leave on good terms
You may be angry that you've been laid off,
but make sure to leave on good terms with
your coworkers and even the manager who
had to let you go. Any of these people could
potentially steer you to a new employment
opportunity, and could serve as a job
reference.
Know your unemployment benefits
Don’t feel ashamed about being laid off.
File for unemployment immediately.
Benefits vary by state; however, in order to
receive unemployment compensation,
workers must meet the unemployment
eligibility requirements for wages earned or
time worked during an established period,
according to Findlaw.com.
Take advantage of outplacementcounseling
If your employer offers outplacement job
counseling as part of your lay-off package,
take advantage of it to fine tune your

resume, practice interviewing and conduct
research on potential employers.
Track job search costs
If you are currently seeking employment,
it's crucial to keep track of your job search
expenses. Some of these costs may be tax
deductible. If you've been unemployed
recently, you also will need to report your
unemployment compensation as income.
According to IRS Publication 529, you can
deduct expenses such as employment and
outplacement agency fees, resume fees,
travel and transportation expenses, as well
as phone calls.
Don't get scammed
People desperate to find work can be easy
targets for scammers. Steer clear of
websites and job interviews that come with
a fee. Pay attention to where your emails
are coming from, and whether or not the
businesses sound legitimate. If it sounds
too good to be true, it probably is.
Take contract and freelance work
In these tough times, consider contract or
freelance employment for a set period of
time. Depending on the job, these positions
typically last anywhere from one month to
a full year. Most contract employees are
paid by the hour, instead of receiving a
salary. You may or may not receive other
benefits, such as health insurance, that are
typically offered to salaried employees.
Step up and volunteer
It’s important to stay positive when you've
just been laid off. You need a positive
attitude to project to a prospective
employer. One of the best ways to re-build
a positive attitude after being laid off is to
volunteer your time or creativity to a non-
profit cause.
