GREATER TORONTO EDITION, APRIL 20–27, 2013

The Government of Canada is providing support for youth in the Greater Toronto Area to help them gain the skills, knowledge and experience they need to enter and succeed in the job market. The announcement was made by Bernard Trottier, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, on behalf of Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

“Our government’s top priorities are cre-ating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity,” said Trottier. “The Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy is helping youth develop the skills and gain the experience they need to get jobs now and pre-pare for the workforce of tomorrow.”

JobStart is receiving over $509,000 from the Skills Link program to help youth overcome barriers to employment. Skills Link is part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employ-ment Strategy (YES).

Participants will develop their employabil-ity skills through workshops on topics such as computer skills, résumé preparation and job searching techniques. They will also gain

meaningful on-the-job experience in the high-demand construction, retail and automotive repair sectors.

“JobStart is grateful for the funding granted by the Government of Canada that will sig-nifi cantly enhance our employment services for at risk youth in the Etobicoke area.” said Heather Sant, Executive Director of JobStart. “This project will help youth fi nd work in the high demand sectors of automotive repair and maintenance, construction or retail or re-turn to school to complete their high school education.”

With an annual budget of more than $300 million, YES helps youth, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop employment skills, fi nd jobs and stay employed. YES includes the Skills Link and Career Focus programs and the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, which creates thousands of job opportunities for students every summer.

Economic Action Plan 2012 provided an extra $50 million over two years to enhance YES with a new initiative that connects young

Canadians with jobs that are in high demand and helps them develop tangible skills and gain work experience. Economic Action Plan 2013 proposes an additional investment of $70 million over three years to support 5,000 more paid internships.

Youth employment programs are part of the Government of Canada’s broader strat-egy to create an educated, skilled and fl exible

workforce. The Government underscored its commitment to this strategy in Canada’s Economic Action Plan. To learn more about Canada’s Economic Action Plan, visit action-plan.gc.ca.

Yorkdale Shopping Centre, one of Canada’s leading shopping destinations, recently an-nounced a new 298,000 square foot retail ex-pansion that will be complete in the Fall of 2016. Construction of Yorkdale’s new retail ex-pansion will begin in January 2014.

Yorkdale has a track-record for being the entry point for international retailers enter-ing the Canadian market. The new expan-sion will be anchored by a 188,000 square foot Nordstrom store. It will also house a diverse range of other retailers that will be announced closer to the expansion’s completions.

“This isn’t a matter of ‘if you build it, they will come’. International brands and enthu-siastic shoppers are fl ocking to Yorkdale and we’re growing to meet market demands,” said Anthony Casalanguida, General Manag-er, Yorkdale Shopping Centre. “The new ex-pansion makes it possible for us to continue to provide the very best experience for our

shoppers by bringing in the most in-demand retailers from around the world.”

“We continue to be impressed by how Ox-ford and AIMCo are taking steps to make an already great centre even better. We feel for-tunate to be part of this expansion at such a strong location, and look forward to the chance to compete for our customers’ busi-ness when we open at Yorkdale,” said Karen McKibbin, President of Nordstrom Canada.

This expansion comes hot on the heels of a $220 million and 145,000 square foot develop-ment that opened to the public in November 2012 and featured fi ve fi rst-to-Canada brands. Yorkdale is adding six additional new-to-Canada brands in 2013 including AllSaints, David Yurman, John Varvatos, Mulberry, White House/Black Market and Zara Home.

Owned by Oxford Properties Group and AIMCo, Yorkdale Shopping Centre has un-dergone four major renovations since opening in 1964. Yorkdale Shopping Centre completed a $110 million dollar expansion in 2005. Since then, the shopping centre has continued to improve its facilities and today serves as the unrivalled gateway for international retailers entering the Canadian market. ●

The federal and provincial governments are working to help Ontario’s agri-food in-dustry grow profi ts, expand markets and manage risk through Growing Forward 2.

“Our Government remains focused on jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for Ontario’s agriculture industry,” said Minister of Agricul-ture and Agri-Food Canada. “Through Grow-ing Forward 2, we are working with Ontario’s hard-working farmers to ensure that the indus-try has the tools available to remain competitive and innovative in new and existing markets.”

The governments of Canada and Ontario have signed a fi ve-year, multi-million dollar bilateral agreement focusing on innovation, competitiveness and market development. It includes $2 billion for federal-provincial-ter-ritorial strategic initiatives, which is a 50 per cent increase in cost-shared funding.

“Ontario’s government is helping our agri-food industry adapt to changes in the mar-ketplace, respond quickly to challenges and seize new opportunities,” said Premier Kath-leen Wynne. “By supporting this important sector, we are strengthening rural communi-ties and building our provincial economy so that everyone can benefi t.”

Ontario’s Growing Forward 2 programs will help the industry capitalize on opportu-nities and contribute to the economy. Infor-mation sessions and workshops will be avail-able in April and May, 2013, with applications opening in June 2013 for provincial programs.

Governments will continue to offer ongo-ing funding for a complete and effective suite of business risk management programs un-der Growing Forward 2, to ensure farmers are protected against severe market volatility and natural disasters. Providing the right climate to attract investment, create jobs and expand industries is a key priority for the Govern-ments of Canada and Ontario to help build a strong economy.

triOS College is excited to announce that it has received Accreditation Candidacy Status for its Physiotherapy Assistant/Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. Candidacy Sta-tus is a pre-requisite in the accreditation pro-cess authorized by the Occupational Thera-pist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program (OTA & PTA EAP). This status is only achieved when education programs meet the high standards set forth by the OTA & PTA EAP.

Candidacy Status means that the triOS pro-gram is formally affi liated with the OTA & PTA EAP and will seek full accreditation. “It is such an achievement to be the fi rst Private Career College in Ontario to gain Accredita-tion Candidacy Status for our program,” said Wendy Churchill, Director of Academic and Employment Services.

“I would like to extend our sincere appreci-ation to our entire healthcare faculty – a team dedicated to excellence in education and helping our graduates succeed in the fi eld,” Churchill added.

The OTA & PTA Education Accreditation Program was established to promote and recognize quality educational programs and support the continued growth of the industry. Accreditation involves continuously working with the OTA & PTA EAP to ensure programs are fulfi lling their commitment to educational quality. Achieving Accreditation Candidacy Status means that the PTA/OTA program at triOS College is on the right path to gain-ing full accreditation. To become accredited, a program must meet rigorous standards which ensure that the highest possible caliber of education equips students with the neces-sary skills to succeed in the fi eld.

This achievement adds to the other advan-tages of the triOS College PTA/OTA program. Students of this program receive a 500-hour practicum placement, membership with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA), an Anatomy lab workshop at the University of Guelph and canfi tpro™ Personal Training Specialist certifi cation.

The Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accredi-tation Program (OTA & PTA EAP) is a joint initiative of the Canadian Association of Occu-pational Therapists (CAOT) and Physiothera-py Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC). CAOT and PEAC are independently incor-porated under federal law. The mission of the CAOT is to advance excellence in occupational therapy and it is the sole accrediting agency in Canada with the mandate for accreditation of occupational therapist educational programs. The mission of PEAC is to ensure the quality of physiotherapy education in Canada through accreditation. CAOT and PEAC are committed partners in the development and management of the OTA & PTA EAP.
