GREATER TORONTO EDITION, MAY 18–25, 2013

Spring is the season best known for clean-ing, and for job searchers, it’s an ideal time to “usher out the old and bring in the new.” Randstad Canada has a few tips that could make an impact on your job search and help you ramp up for landing the perfect career opportunity.

Your resumé should tell your story: Employ-ers have heard bland, generic statements such as: I’m a hard worker, I learn quickly or I’m results-oriented, many times. If your resumé sticks with these clichés, how will it make hir-ing managers remember you? Instead, tell them interesting stories! More and more, employers conduct accomplishment-driven interviews, and look for richness and diversity in your ex-perience. Start by reviewing your resumé and craft meaningful examples of challenges you met and solutions you have found to overcome them, without omitting the results.

MANAGE YOUR OWN PERSONAL BRAND

Your online image does matter. Social media monitoring service Reppler sur-

veyed more than 300 hiring professionals on their recruitment habits, and found that 91 per cent of employers use social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook and

LinkedIn to screen job applicants. Google your name to see what comes up. Build a strong, employer-friendly presence on-line, by carefully selecting which content you want to post publicly. Another recent survey revealed that Linkedin is the most popular tool amongst staffi ng profession-als, so be sure to have a comprehensive profi le, one that is error-free and attractive. Position yourself with a catchy subject line, describe your accomplishments in a clear and impactful way, and add your skills and expertise. Incidentally, employers are inter-ested not just in “hard” professional skills but also in “soft” human skills, abilities and

characteristics. Ask for recommendations, share interesting articles in your fi eld and take part in groups!

GET MOBILE JOB SEARCH APPS Utilizing the best apps, setting up job

alerts, and organizing contacts on your mo-bile device are all excellent ways to fi nd jobs and network with your mobile device.

CREATE A MASTER JOB APPLICATION

Save time and be ready whenever an op-portunity comes up. Create a form with all of your up-to-date information, ensuring you have checked it for accuracy, grammar and spelling. Make sure to include correct addresses, job titles, employers, termina-tion dates, contact names and phone num-bers. This will be your source document for all applications.

MEET NEW PEOPLE Everybody uses social media to fi nd a job

or new talent, but that doesn’t mean you can’t benefi t from personal interactions. Reach out to your contacts and go to networking events and conferences in your fi eld. Put together a short and compelling description of who you are and what you do. Listen and ask questions, hand out business cards and build new relationships! Word of mouth and personal referrals are still methods that work in today’s job market.

Spring clean your resumé

Ontario’s economy continues to grow stronger, gaining 3,800 net new jobs in April. Full-time employment was the largest con-tributor to the April job gain, increasing by 17,600 jobs.

“April’s job gains demonstrate Ontario’s strong economic recovery,” said Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employ-ment Dr. Eric Hoskins. “Our government is committed to creating more employment op-portunities for the people of this province so that everyone can enjoy a more prosperous and fair Ontario.”

Since June 2009, Ontario has created 401,900 jobs, exceeding the number of jobs lost in the recession by 136,100. And the province con-tinues to outpace the United States and all the Great Lakes states in job creation.

To seize new economic opportunities, the government laid out a comprehensive plan for jobs and growth in the 2013 Ontario Bud-get. If passed, investments planned over the

next three years for public transit, roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and other projects would support more than 100,000 jobs on av-erage each year.

Providing the right climate to attract in-vestment, create jobs and grow the economy is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to build a prosperous and fair province for all Ontarians.

QUICK FACTS• Ontario’s 2013 Budget outlines a new Youth

Jobs Strategy that would help create job op-portunities for about 30,000 youth, while promoting entrepreneurship and innovation.

• In 2012, Ontario ranked third in North America for the number of foreign direct investment projects.

• Ontario is on track to eliminate the defi cit by 2017–18. The province is the only gov-ernment in Canada to beat its fi scal targets for the fourth year in a row. ●

Ontario is kicking-off consultations on the Youth Jobs Strategy to help connect young people with good jobs. Key youth, business, education, labour and non-profi t leaders came together in Toronto to advise the gov-ernment on ways to increase opportunities for youth employment and to encourage en-trepreneurship and innovation.

“Our goal – youth, government, the pri-vate sector, non-profi ts and institutions – is to work closely with one another to ensure that Ontario’s youth get the opportunities they need and the jobs that they deserve,” said Minister of Training, Colleges and Universi-ties Brad Duguid.

Ontario’s 2013 Budget introduced the gov-ernment’s Youth Jobs Strategy to help more young people fi nd jobs or start their own businesses, while helping employers fi nd the skilled workers they need to thrive in the global economy.

“Ontario youth are talented, capable and ready to put their world-class educations to work,” said Minister of Economic Devel-opment, Trade and Employment Dr. Eric Hoskins. “We’re partnering with employers, educators, labour and non-profi ts to ensure that our economy benefi ts from the full par-ticipation of our young people. It’s important not only for our youth today, but for the fu-ture economic success of our province.”

If the Budget is passed, the government would invest $295 million over two years to

create employment opportunities for about 30,000 youth, while promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. The strategy would fo-cus on four core programs, including:• The Ontario Youth Employment Fund,

which would create new job opportunities for youth across Ontario.

• The Ontario Youth Entrepreneurship Fund, which would support the next generation of entrepreneurs through mentorship, start-up capital and outreach.

• The Ontario Youth Innovation Fund, which would help youth lead industrial research, development and commercialization.

• The Business-Labour Connectivity and Training Fund, which would bring together business, labour, educators and youth to identify and develop the skills young peo-ple need to succeed.Helping youth succeed in a 21st-century

economy is part of the Ontario government’s plan to build a prosperous and fair province.

QUICK FACTS• The $195-million Ontario Youth Employ-

ment Fund would be available as early as September 2013.

• The government will hold consultations on the Youth Jobs Strategy across the province throughout May.

• Ontario’s Summer Company program helped Ontario students launch more than 480 businesses in 2012. ●
