Tips for women juggling both a family and a career
The days when single income house-holds were the norm are long gone, as nowadays both Mom and Dad must work in order to make ends meet. That reality has left many women juggling the obliga-tions of motherhood with the obligations of a successful career.
Such a juggling act is seldom easy, and many mothers fi nd themselves neglecting one obligation for the benefi t of another. The following are a few tips to make balancing work and family a little easier.
SHARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES
While the days of the single-income house-hold may be a thing of the past, many of the conventions of those days remain. Women may still feel the responsibility to cook family meals, clean up after the children and make it to all of their children’s sporting events or other school-related events. But those re-sponsibilities should be shared so women can ensure they’re giving both their careers and families the attention each deserves. Devise a schedule where both parents tackle such re-sponsibilities equally so each parent knows when they have some wiggle room. For ex-ample, if your husband routinely cooks on Tuesdays, then you know you won’t need to rush home on Tuesday night and you might be able to stay at the offi ce a little later to work on a project or catch up on work. Such shar-ing and scheduling can considerably reduce the stress of juggling a family and a career.
EXERCISE DAILY
Juggling a family and a career is often stressful, and stress can have a very ad-
verse effect on your health. Women with high stress levels are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and cardiovascu-lar disease. But the American Psychological Association notes the positive impact of ex-ercise as a means to alleviating stress, citing studies that have shown that physically ac-tive people have lower rates of anxiety and depression than people who are sedentary. It’s easy to become irritable when stressed, and no mother wants to be irritable in the presence of her children. Incorporating exer-cise into your daily routine is a great way to alleviate the stress of juggling a family and a career, and you can even incorporate your
family into your exercise routine, going for nightly walks after dinner or playing with your children in the yard.
STAY INVOLVED WITH YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL
Many mothers fi nd staying active with their children’s school is a great oppor-tunity for them to bond with their kids and keep abreast of developments at their school. Such involvement can be minimal, such as attending a monthly luncheon with kids or agreeing to be a chaperone on one or two class trips per year. Such events are typically scheduled months in advance, so
you should have ample time to arrange a break from the offi ce without neglecting your professional responsibilities.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WORK-FROM-HOME POLICIES
As technology has advanced, many com-panies have become much more lenient with regard to employees working from home. If your company allows you to work from home, even if it’s only once per week, then take advantage of that offer. This can provide more time with your kids, it will likely save you money on childcare, and you are certain to appreciate the opportunity to skip your daily commute, even if it is only once a week or a couple of times per month.
PLAN AHEAD
Looking ahead is another way to make jug-gling a family and a career easier. Plan meals in advance to cut down on preparation time when it’s your night to cook. This can involve placing foods in a slow cooker in the morning or preparing part of the meal in advance so it’s ready to go in the oven the moment you arrive home.
Another way to plan ahead is to look at kids’ school schedules and plan trips dur-ing the school year when school won’t be in session. A three-day weekend is a perfect op-portunity to plan a getaway to a nearby locale where the whole family can relax and recon-nect without the pressures of daily life.
Juggling a family and career is not always easy, but there are ways that today’s mothers can raise a happy family and still have a suc-cessful career. ●

Some executives dreaming of their gold-en years are unsure when those years will actually start. Nearly four in 10 (38 per cent) chief fi nancial offi cers (CFOs) interviewed for a Robert Half Management Resources survey said they had to change their plans from fi ve years ago or are more uncertain
about when they will retire. “Economic factors and personal demands
have caused many executives to re-evalu-ate their plans for retirement,” said David King, Canadian district president of Robert Half Management Resources. “Organisa-tions can accommodate tenured employees
who wish to retire and retain their legacy experience by increasing succession plan-ning efforts and offering interim or consult-ing opportunities. These options can help transfer knowledge from departing execu-tives to future company leaders.”
The survey was developed by Robert
Half Management Resources, the world’s premier provider of senior-level fi nance, accounting and business systems profes-sionals on a project and interim basis. It was conducted by an independent research fi rm and is based on interviews with more than 270 CFOs across Canada. ●
Survey suggests executives are rethinking retirement

Ontario is appointing a task force that will help Scarborough capitalize on economic de-velopment opportunities arising from tran-sit investments.
“Our government is moving forward to establish a joint Ontario-Toronto-private sec-tor task force that will look at opportunities to maximize economic development and job opportunities as we continue to build the Big Move projects in Scarborough,” said Minister of Transportation and Minister of Infrastruc-ture Glen Murray.
Co-chaired by Scarborough Centre MPP Brad Duguid and Toronto City Councillor Michael Thompson, the task force will create an urban renewal strategy that will strength-en the regional economy by helping to ad-dress gridlock so that families can get to and from work easily and businesses can get their products moving more quickly and spend less time sitting in traffi c.
“Transit improvements for Scarborough will help make it easier residents and will encour-age much needed business development and job opportunities that help create a more live-able and stronger community,” said Duguid.
The strategy will also encourage smart urban development to help leverage private invest-ment, improve access to public services, maxi-mize ridership, develop industrial clusters and create greater connectivity to the region.
“I am pleased to be involved with the prov-ince’s plans to establish a new task force that will look at ways to improve and maximize benefi ts that come with building transit, such
as employment and investments that spur economic development,” said Thompson.
The Province continues to urge the Federal government to develop a national infrastruc-ture strategy and to invest in transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Investing in public transit infrastructure is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to help reduce gridlock, strengthen communi-ties, create jobs and help people in their ev-eryday lives.
QUICK FACTS• Metrolinx indicated in its letter to the City
Manager on June 28 that there are costs as-sociated with changing the LRT project to a subway. Improvements to Kennedy Sta-tion are still needed as part of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project and the Province will transfer $320 million from the original Scarborough LRT budget to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project.
• The Province will invest the remaining $1.4 billion for the new Scarborough sub-way proposal.
• The Province is fully funding the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which will be in service by 2020. Tunnel boring machines named Dennis and Lea are currently digging the underground portion of the line eastward from Black Creek Drive.
• Since 2003, Ontario has invested more than $16.1 billion in public transit in the prov-ince, including approximately $7.7 billion in GO Transit. ●
