Excitement is brewing for Ontario craft beers

Ontario is providing small craft brewers with renewed support by extending the Ontar-io Microbrewery Strategy for two more years to help create jobs and expand the industry.

“We’re proud to work with the Ontario government to bring more attention to the fi ne products made by our province’s craft brewers,” said President of Ontario Craft Brewers John Hay. “Ontario has tremendous brewing talent and we thank the Ontario gov-ernment for helping support and grow the opportunities for Ontario craft beer makers.”

Through the Ontario Microbrewery Strat-egy, the province is helping small brewers explore new marketing, training and tourism development opportunities.

“Ontario’s award-winning craft brew-ers are creating jobs and contributing to the growth of our economy,” said Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employ-ment Dr. Eric Hoskins. “Extending the mi-crobrewery strategy will help support the success of this thriving industry – not just by supporting brewers themselves, but by sup-porting the spin-off jobs they create through their success including in local agriculture and in the hospitality industry.”

Craft beer is a growing and important in-dustry in Ontario, employing more than 650 people in direct brewery jobs at 47 microbrew-

eries. Support through Ontario’s Microbrew-ery Strategy also helps create indirect jobs in Ontario’s agriculture and hospitality sectors.

Providing the right climate to attract in-vestment, create jobs and grow the economy is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to build a prosperous and fair province.

QUICK FACTS• The province is renewing the Ontario Mi-

crobrewery Strategy for $1.2 million in an-nual funding from 2014–2016.

• The Ontario Craft Brewers help implement the microbrewery strategy by working to raise awareness of locally-made lagers, ales, pilsners, porters and stouts.

• Ontario’s craft brewers are the largest pur-chaser of Ontario-grown hops.

• In 2012, Niagara College offered Canada’s fi rst Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program – everyone in the fi rst graduating class got industry jobs.

• Ontario craft brewers produce over 140 in-ternational beer styles and have won hun-dreds of medals in major national and inter-national competitions.

• In 2012, Ontario’s craft beers led LCBO sales in all categories, including wine and spirits, with nearly 45 per cent sales growth. ●

Skills make innovative companies Skills, attitudes and behaviours of indi-

viduals are central to an organization’s abil-ity to innovate, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s “Innovation Skills Profi le 2.0 (ISP2.0),” launched recently. It identifi es the skills needed to generate ideas, take cal-culated risks and be entrepreneurial, develop interpersonal relationships that support inno-vation, and implement ideas.

The ISP2.0 is designed to be used by em-ployees, employers, educators, students, gov-ernments, labour and communities to become more innovative.

“Skills consistently rank in the top three or four factors cited by business leaders as being necessary for successful innovation within their organizations. Skills are the enabling component of the innovation process and a lack of skills is a huge impediment to greater innovation in Canadian organizations,” said Douglas Watt, Director, Organizational Effec-tiveness and Learning Research.

“Businesses that recognize the value and importance of skills will survive and fl our-ish in today’s global economy. This new skills profi le is a framework for dialogue and action.

Companies that succeed have a mix of individ-uals, teams, and leaders who collectively have all of the skills found in the ISP 2.0,” he added.

The online publication identifi es four catego-ries of skills, attitudes, and behaviours that con-tribute to an organization’s capacity to innovate: • Creativity, Problem-Solving, and Continu-

ous Improvement Skills • Risk Assessment and Risk-Taking Skills • Relationship-Building and Communication

Skills • Implementation Skills.

The Innovation Skills Profi le 2.0 is a prod-

uct of the Conference Board’s Centre for Busi-ness Innovation (CBI), a fi ve-year initiative to help bring about major improvements in fi rm-level business innovation in Canada.

“Individuals and teams with the right mix of innovation skills, attitudes, and behaviours will be better prepared to add value to the tasks, projects and activities that underpin corporate innovation performance and bet-ter bottom-line results. The ISP2.0 helps busi-nesses get there,” said Dr. Michael Bloom, Vice-President, Organizational Effectiveness and Learning at the Conference Board. ●

SOUTH ETOBICOKE AND TORONTO

As many students close the books on their educational pursuits and prepare their re-sumes for life in the workforce, a BMO Bank of Montreal survey released today shows personality traits outrank both credentials and education for many employers who are looking to hire new graduates.

According to BMO, half (51 per cent) of Cana-dian businesses plan to hire students or recent graduates this year. The BMO report ranks the traits on which business owners tend to place the largest importance when assessing junior job candidates who come directly out of school.

THE REPORT REVEALED: • Personality traits top the list for employers,

with one-third (30 per cent) ranking this as the most important quality

• Skill set lies second on the list, with one-quarter of employers (26 per cent) making this their top priority

• Work experience ranks third, with only 15 per cent citing it as the most important trait

• References and recommendations (8 per cent) and degree earned/school attended (3 per cent) rank at the bottom of the list“With so many students looking for em-

ployment, it’s encouraging to see Canadian companies with a notable appetite to hire stu-dents or recent graduates,” said Steve Mur-phy, Senior Vice President, BMO Commercial Banking. “These organizations recognize that this group of Canadians offers a wealth of valuable traits and talents to the workforce.”

“Employment among those in the gradu-ate age range of 20-24 has trended moderately higher since the recession,” said Sal Guatieri, Senior Economist, BMO Capital Markets. “For popular summer jobs such as those in tourism, students or graduates might see less opportu-nity this summer due to the strong loonie, and Canadian shoppers keeping a tighter grip on their wallets. However, the expected upturn in U.S. demand should have a positive impact on Canada’s economy and job prospects.”

The report also looked at how these traits rank among employers in the service and manufacturing sectors, and found: • Skill set ranks highest among employers

in the manufacturing sector while degree earned ranks lowest (37 per cent and 1 per cent respectively);

• Surprisingly, the manufacturing sector places more importance on personality traits than does the service sector (31 per cent and 28 per cent respectively)

• For employers in Canada’s service sector, the personality traits of a new graduate will hold twice as much sway as their skill set (28 per cent versus 16 per cent) The report was conducted via Pollara with

a sample of 500 Canadian business owners, conducted in early 2013. The margin of error for this survey is ± 4.4 per cent, 19 times out of 20. Data has been weighted by region and company size, based on a December 2011 Sta-tistics Canada Study, so that it is representa-tive of all Canadian business owners. ●
