The Government of Canada announced funding to support recent graduates in Toron-to to help them gain the skills, knowledge and experience they need to enter and succeed in the job market. The announcement was made by John Carmichael, MP for Don Valley West on behalf of Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

“Our government’s top priorities are cre-ating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity,” said Carmichael. “The Govern-ment of Canada’s Youth Employment Strat-egy is helping youth develop the skills and gain the experience they need to get jobs now and prepare for the workforce of tomorrow.”

The Learning Partnership is receiving over $59,000 from the Career Focus pro-gram to help recent graduates gain on-the-job experience and apply the skills acquired through education to ease the transition to work. Career Focus is part of the Govern-ment of Canada’s Youth Employment Strat-egy (YES).

The Learning Partnership is a national charitable organization dedicated to building a strong public education system in Canada. As recent post-secondary graduates, the par-

ticipants will have paid internships at The Learning Partnership in the fi elds of human resources, policy and research or communica-tions and marketing.

“We are very pleased that through the Ca-reer Focus program we are able to provide

paid work experience for three new gradu-ates from college or university,” said Akela Peoples, President and CEO of The Learning Partnership. “This is a tremendous program that provides new graduates with the oppor-tunity to gain valuable and meaningful work

experience in their fi eld of study and sets them up for future success.”

With an annual funding of approximately $300 million, YES helps youth, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop skills, fi nd jobs and stay employed. YES includes the Skills Link and Career Focus programs and the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, which creates thousands of job opportunities for students every summer.

Economic Action Plan 2013 proposes an ad-ditional investment of $70 million over three years to create 5,000 more paid internships. This is further to the extra $50 million that was invested through Economic Action Plan 2012 to enhance YES with a new initiative that connects young Canadians with jobs that are in high demand and helps them develop tangible skills and gain work experience.

Youth employment programs are part of the Government of Canada’s broader strat-egy to connect Canadians with available jobs. Economic Action Plan 2013 proposes new measures to equip Canadians with the skills and training they need. These include the Canada Job Grant, creating opportunities for apprentices and providing support to under-represented groups such as people with dis-abilities, Aboriginal peoples, newcomers and youth. To learn more about Canada’s Eco-nomic Action Plan, visit actionplan.gc.ca.

The Government of Canada is helping youth plan their careers, learn new skills and fi nd jobs through enhanced online services available at youth.gc.ca. ●

Government of Canada invests to help recent grads in Toronto get jobs

“Our government’s top priorities are creating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity.”

Ontario gains a whopping 50,600 jobs in MayThe Ontario government’s focus on creating

jobs and growing our economy continues to get results. In May, the province gained 50,600 jobs. Youth employment rose by 20,200 jobs.

The number of jobs in Ontario has increased 452,500 net jobs from a low in June 2009, with full-time employment up 477,500. This means Ontario has recovered all the jobs lost during the recession and continues to outpace the United States and Great Lakes region in job creation since 2009.

Ontario is focused on providing the right climate to attract investment and build a strong, innovative economy that can provide jobs, opportunities and prosperity for all.

QUICK FACTS• The government’s new Youth Jobs Strat-

egy would help create job opportunities for about 30,000 youth, while promoting entre-preneurship and innovation.

• In 2012, Ontario ranked third in North America for the number of foreign direct investment projects.

• Ontario is on track to eliminate the defi -cit by 2017–18. The province is the only government in Canada to beat its fi scal

targets for the fourth year in a row. “Our government is focused on creat-

ing jobs and growing Ontario’s economy, and we’re getting results,” said Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Em-ployment Dr. Eric Hoskins. “The increase in jobs during the month of May demon-strates that we are on track to building a strong, innovative economy that provides opportunities, jobs and prosperity for all Ontarians.” ●

Talent on demand Companies are using temporary profession-

als for a range of roles, from ensuring produc-tivity remains on track to assessing potential full-time staff, a new Accountemps survey fi nds. Nine in 10 (90 per cent) chief fi nancial of-fi cers (CFOs) interviewed fi nd it very or some-what benefi cial to use temporary workers when maintaining productivity. Eighty-nine per cent of survey respondents said hiring contingent staff is an effective way to evaluate prospective fi rst-time employees fi rsthand.

“Given the uptick in demand for tempo-rary professionals in the current market, more employers are feeling the need to rely more heavily on the fl exible workforce,” said Greg Scileppi, president of Robert Half, Inter-national Staffi ng Operations. “Supplement-ing core teams with project professionals is not only a cost-effective staffi ng strategy, but allows fi rms to be more nimble and access specialised expertise at a much quicker pace.”

“Job seekers who wish to get their foot in the door with a particular company may also fi nd this arrangement ideal, as it allows the individual to gauge their potential fi t for the position, and assess a company’s culture before determining whether to pursue a full-time role at the organisation,” added Scileppi.

Accountemps highlights fi ve ways for managers to help temporary professionals get off to a good start: • Get everyone on the same page. Before the

new employee starts, let your team know why he or she is being brought on, the type

of work to be performed and how the con-tributions will help alleviate workloads in the department.

• Set a game plan. Temporary professionals can contribute more quickly if they know what is expected of them from day one. Give clear direction, such as project details and deadlines, at the start of any assignment.

• Select a single point of contact. It’s best to have you or someone on your staff who thoroughly understands the scope of work oversee the interim professional’s progress. Just as you would with a full-time employ-ee, establish open lines of communication to ensure a smooth project transition.

• Stay in touch. Continue to check in with the temporary staff member to answer ques-tions, provide feedback and ensure the project is on track.

• Give updates. If you are working through a staffi ng fi rm, let your contact there know how the interim employee is performing. This will provide valuable feedback for his or her future assignments. Also, let the staff-ing fi rm know upfront if you are contem-plating a temporary-to-hire arrangement. Temporary assignments can be a good way to evaluate prospective new hires fi rsthand. The survey was developed by Accoun-

temps and conducted by an independent re-search fi rm. It includes responses from more than 116 CFOs who use temporary workers, from a stratifi ed random sample of Canadian companies with 20 or more employees. ●
