Job insecurity, abusive supervision, exces-sive demands, the encroachment of work on family life and domestic relationship prob-lems top the list of factors that contribute to the development of mental health issues among workers.

These fi ndings, disclosed recently, are the results of the largest research study ever con-ducted on the subject in Canada. The study was undertaken by researchers at the Univer-sité de Montréal, Concordia University and Université Laval with the support of Stan-dard Life.

Researchers focused on a series of factors that may lead to the development of psy-chological distress, depression and burnout at work. More than 2,100 employees at 63 companies were interviewed about their per-sonal and professional lives. The results of this questionnaire were supported by cortisol measurements. This research methodology is a fi rst in the fi eld of study of mental health factors in the workplace. Cortisol is a hor-mone found in saliva and recognized as an indicator of an individual’s stress level.

The researchers responsible for the study, professors Alain Marchand and Pierre Du-rand of the Université de Montréal’s School of Industrial Relations, are convinced the im-pacts of an individual’s personal and work-related problems on his or her mental health cannot be considered separately. Professor Durand explains: “The strength of this re-search is that it takes a large number of fac-

tors into account. These include work organi-zation, family and employment relationships and certain personality traits, such as self-esteem, as well as other potential risk factors, like chronic illness or alcohol misuse.”

The study also provided an opportunity to review approximately 65 corporate prac-tices designed to reduce stress and improve employee health. These practices range from operating a company fi tness centre to

implementing shorter working hours. “The good news is that we know it is possible to introduce effective measures to reduce mental health risks,” says Eric Pfeiffer, Se-nior Consultant, Health and Wellness, at Standard Life. “The results of this study will provide our customers with additional motivation to adopt an integrated preven-tion approach tailored to their specifi c busi-ness needs.”

The study was funded in part by the Canadi-an Institutes of Health Research and the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé, and conduct-ed over a period of more than 4 years with 2,162 workers from all sectors. Saliva samples to determine cortisol levels were taken from 401 workers and compared to questionnaire results. The saliva samples were taken at fi ve different times of the day on three separate oc-casions (on two workdays and on one day off).

The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that approximately 1 out of 5 employ-ees (21.4 per cent of Canada’s working popu-lation) suffers from a mental illness that poten-tially affects his or her productivity at work. Lost productivity related to absenteeism, pre-senteeism (when a worker is physically pres-ent but unproductive) and turnover costs Ca-nadian companies $6.3 billion each year.

The Standard Life Assurance Company of Canada (“Standard Life”) provides long-term savings, investments and insurance solutions to more than 1.4 million Canadians, including group retirement and insurance plan members.

Standard Life promotes a comprehensive approach to health and wellness in the work-place. As part of its group insurance offering, it provides support to employers who wish to develop health and wellness strategies, de-sign and implement customized programs, and analyze results. Standard Life strives to help its corporate clients improve fi nancial re-sults by integrating health and wellness with drug and absence management programs. ●

Study: depression at workJob insecurity, work/life balance are key components of mental health issues in the workplace

Ontario is proposing legislation that, if passed, would require producers to take re-sponsibility for recycling the products they sell.

“We want an Ontario where waste becomes worth in the form of a cleaner environment, new investment, new recycling factories, new jobs and new Ontario-made products,” said Minister of the Environment Jim Bradley. “Our proposed legislation can help get us there.”

The proposed Waste Reduction Act would encourage producers to turn more waste into new products, and in doing so generate new investment and create jobs. Ontario’s proposed Waste Reduction Strategy, also re-

leased today for public and stakeholder feed-back, sets out a blueprint and timeline for how and when the proposed act would be implemented.

The proposed Waste Reduction Act and strategy would:• Boost recycling in the industrial, commer-

cial and institutional sector, starting with paper and packaging waste.

• Protect consumers from surprise eco-fees by making sure that recycling costs are included in the advertised price of a product. This move will also incent com-panies to look for ways to make their re-

cycling processes more economical and stay competitive.

• Improve oversight and accountability of waste diversion by clearly defi ning the roles and responsibilities of individual produc-ers, the provincial government, municipali-ties and a new Waste Reduction Authority.

• Allow for greater producer funding of the Blue Box program, easing the fi nancial bur-den on municipal property taxpayers.

• Foster innovation in product and packaging design.Recycling more waste is part of the new

Ontario government’s plan to create jobs and

build a stronger, greener economy for future generations.

QUICK FACTS• Recycling generates ten times more jobs

than disposal.• Every additional 1,000 tonnes of recycled

waste generates seven new jobs.• About 60 per cent of Ontario’s waste is pro-

duced by industries, businesses and institu-tions such as shopping malls, hospitals and offi ces, but only 13 per cent of it is recycled.

• About 12 million tonnes of waste is gener-ated in Ontario every year. ●

The more business acquaintances you have, the merrier you might be. But the qual-ity of those contacts has a bigger impact on your career success, a new Robert Half Tech-nology survey of information technology (IT) professionals suggests. Sixty-three percent of IT workers polled recently rated the quality of their professional network as “very impor-tant” to their overall career success, compared to 46 percent who felt the same way about the size of their network. When it comes to mak-ing new connections, (44 percent) of IT pro-fessionals surveyed prefer to network online and 22 percent favor doing it in person.

“Knowing someone professionally and being willing to go to bat for that person are two different things,” said John Reed, senior executive director of Robert Half Technology. “You may have hundreds of LinkedIn con-nections, but if the relationships are superfi -cial, your contacts may not be very helpful when you’re seeking professional advice or assistance with a job search.”

Reed added, “Quality connections take time to establish, but they are a valuable ca-reer safety net, whether someone is just start-ing out or has many years of experience.”

Robert Half Technology provides fi ve pit-falls to avoid when networking:

LOSING TOUCH Keep the lines of communication open by

offering a note of congratulations to a contact who was recently promoted or asking to meet for lunch. Set aside time each week for these types of networking activities.

EXHAUSTING YOUR RESOURCES Most people are happy to help on occasion,

but avoid overburdening one contact with re-peated requests. Broaden your efforts and tap others in your network if you have trouble overcoming a particular career challenge.

FORGETTING YOUR P’S AND Q’S

A little gratitude can go a long way toward maintaining positive relationships. Always show appreciation to those who act on your behalf, even if their efforts don’t result in the desired outcome.

TAKING A GENERALIST APPROACH

Instead of sending a mass email to every-one in your network asking for assistance, try customized, targeted messages to specifi c contacts.

FAILING TO RETURN THE FAVOUR

Networking is a two-way street: Look for opportunities to help your contacts whenever possible, and you’ll fi nd that others are happy to do the same for you.

The survey was developed by Robert Half Technology, a leading provider of in-formation technology (IT) professionals on a project and full-time basis. The responses are from over 7,500 IT workers to a Web survey conducted by Robert Half Technol-ogy in early 2013. ●

Looking forward, learning moreWhether a recent high-school graduate,

looking to enter a greater professional fi eld, a new immigrant building your life in Canada, or moving forward to sharpen your current skill set – whatever your reason, a decision to begin post-secondary studies can be an all encompassing one! There’s a lot to consider as individuals take their fi rst, advancing steps: what to study, where to go, who to turn too, funding options and what happens after – what supports are available? For BizTech Col-lege and their stakeholders, this is the bottom line: comprehensive training that propels indi-viduals into meaningful, productive and last-ing careers.

As an established academic facility within the busy career education landscape, Biz-Tech College was born out of what they per-sonally know is important to adult students and their families. BizTech’s mandate was built out of their personal frustrations sur-rounding thorough and accessible education with reliable career supports; people need qualifi ed, affordable learning, leveraged with committed follow-up to successfully compete in the growing labour market. This is what they do.

Coming into BizTech College, prospec-tive students begin with a personal consult; advisors fi rst learn about client interests and experiences as a vital aspect of who they are – their skills and aptitudes. From there, they focus on where individuals would like to see themselves go, how their present skills may assist vocational positioning and how BizTech College’s accommodating fi nance options can put post-secondary education conveniently within reach. People are often surprised to dis-

cover how easy the entire process is and how many potential avenues are available to them through different programs, or how much their international achievements can bridge their career aspirations now!

Within the career college marketplace pro-spective clients need to examine carefully what a school offers – its program modules, academic standards, seasoned instructors, course delivery and classroom facilitation, with modern labs and foremost after gradu-ate care. Biztech College Administrator, Poo-nam Narula, makes no apology for its high academic benchmarks set as part of BizTech’s service accountability, “Our comprehensive curriculums, demanding attendance and high passing average, ensures greater em-ployment readiness for each graduate as they enter professional life.”

For anyone wondering about their next career step, BizTech College views the larger labour horizon and stays current in education developments, like the federal government’s new post-secondary education and training initiatives, as part of its continuing Economic Action Plan. This, in conjunction with popular program innovations such as the Pre-Medical Program which cooperates with a recognized international school of medicine so students can become practicing physicians, or the Pri-mary Care Paramedic Program, a fi rst in the GTA private career college backdrop!

BizTech College looks forward to helping students build their future through education innovation, seamless delivery and graduate support. They know what we are doing be-cause they’ve been there. To learn more call (905) 212-9039. ●
