Employers can no longer afford to ignore mental health at work; it’s the elephant in the boardroom that is costing Canadian em-ployers and the economy $51 billion dollars a year. It’s also keeping employees from reach-ing their full potential as they suffer the im-measurable costs of stigma and lack of sup-port associated with mental illness.

Today, half a million Canadians missed work because of mental health issues accord-ing to Government of Canada, “The Human Face of Mental Health and Mental Illness in Canada”, 2006. According to a recent study conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of Part-ners for Mental Health, nearly half of work-ing Canadians agree that work and place of work is the most stressful part of their lives. The survey also revealed that 16 per cent of Canadians feel that work is a frequent or on-going source of feelings of depression, anxiety or other mental health symptoms. Yet, these employees are often keeping these feelings and issues secret rather than confi ding in their employers, colleagues or friends due to the

possibility of stigma, discrimination and lack of support in the workplace. In fact, the same Ispos Reid study indicated that two in three Canadians would not have an open discus-sion with their boss about their mental illness.

“The detrimental effects of unmanaged mental illness in the workplace – from the im-pact on the individual, to loss of productivity, and to increased disability claims – confi rms the critical need for businesses and individu-

als to take action when it comes to mental health” says Jeff Moat, President, Partners for Mental Health. “Even though 44 per cent of workers say they have or have had men-tal health issues, people are still not talking openly about it in the workplace. This has to change for the sake of business and the long-term health of all employees.”

In order to help drive change, the Not Myself Today campaign launched on May 9 coinciding with Mental Health Week in Can-ada. This campaign is designed to educate and engage Canadians on the issues of men-tal health in the workplace. It encourages businesses to step-up and invest in mentally healthy workplaces.

A key component of the program in-volves participating in a Not Myself Day @ Work whereby businesses shine a spotlight on workplace mental health and engage in-dividuals in meaningful ways to facilitate improvement.

The national charitable organization, Part-ners for Mental Health is leading the initia-tive as part of their mandate to transform the way Canadians think about and support mental health.

To get involved and learn more, please visit www.notmyselftoday.com or call/email Partners for Mental Health at 613-798-5862 or [email protected]. ●

We should talk about itMental health in the workplace is a $51 billion elephant in the boardroom

“...nearly half of working Canadians agree that work and place of work is the most stressful part of their lives. ”

Athletes’ Village construction is halfway to the fi nish line The Ontario-led CIBC Pan Am and Para-

pan Am Athletes’ Village project has offi cially reached 50 per cent completion, with construc-tion continuing on-schedule and on-budget.

The Athletes’ Village – the largest infra-structure project associated with the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games – will be ready to turn over to the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee in early 2015, well in advance of welcoming over 10,000 athletes, coaches and team offi cials.

Following the Games, the benefi ts of the Athletes’ Village will bring many positive im-pacts to the community, including:• More than 300 families will have access to

affordable rental and ownership housing with a move in date set for spring 2016.

• The new George Brown College residence will provide housing for 500 students.

• The former industrial lands will be trans-formed into a beautiful, sustainable mixed-use neighbourhood.

• The new community will be accessible and LEED Gold certifi ed.

“The accessible, LEED Gold certifi ed Village – home to athletes and offi cials at Games-time – will become a vibrant new community for hundreds of local families and is just one of many benefi cial legacies we’ve triggered through our commitment to the Games,” said Minister Responsible for the Pan/Parapan American Games Mi-chael Chan.

QUICK FACTS• The project will include one-, two-, three-

and four-bedroom units, addressing the need for mixed-use affordable housing within the City of Toronto.

• The construction of the Athletes’ Village is expected to create and support 5,200 jobs, including employment for approxi-

mately 700 workers on site at the peak of construction.

• Ten per cent of these units will be fully accessible, housing para-athletes during the Games and persons with disabilities after the Games.

• The Pan Am and Parapan Am Games will create 15,000 jobs and bring more than 250,000 tourists to the Greater Golden Horseshoe and is the fi rst international multi-sporting event held in Ontario in more than 80 years. Completing the Athletes’ Village on-time

and on-budget is part of the Ontario gov-ernment’s commitment to provide Pan Am and Parapan Am athletes and offi cials with an exceptional experience, on and off the fi eld of play. ●

Employers are not only looking for educated labor to fi ll high skill positions, but to fi ll tradi-tionally lower skill jobs as well. Thirty-six per cent of hiring managers and human resource professionals said they are hiring more employ-ees with college degrees for positions that were historically held by high school graduates.

“Employers are fi lling more entry level func-tions with educated labor,” said Brent Rasmus-sen, President of CareerBuilder North America. “While some of this may be attributed to a com-petitive job market that lends itself to college grads taking lower skill jobs, it also speaks to companies raising performance expectations for roles within their fi rms to enhance overall productivity, product quality and sales.”

Of employers who have hired more work-ers with college degrees for jobs that were his-torically held by high school graduates, most reported positive impacts on their business in the forms of: • Higher quality of work – 76 per cent • Productivity – 45 per cent • Revenue – 23 per cent • Customer loyalty – 17 per cent

Specifi c qualifi cations for jobs are becom-

ing more demanding. One-in-four employers (25 per cent) said they have increased their educational requirements for jobs over the last fi ve years.

Fifty-nine per cent reported that they re-quire a two-year university degree or higher for their positions; 45 per cent require a four-year degree or higher.

The lack of a college education may limit upward mobility. Forty-one per cent of em-ployers said they are unlikely to promote someone who doesn’t have a college degree.

This survey was conducted online within Canada by Harris Interactive© on behalf of CareerBuilder.ca among 415 Canadian hiring managers and human resource profession-als (employed full-time; not self-employed; non-government) ages 18 and over between November 1 and November 30, 2012 (percent-ages for some questions are based on a subset, based on their responses to certain questions). With a pure probability sample of 415 one could say with a 95 percent probability that the overall results have a sampling error of +/- 4.81 percentage points. Sampling error for data from sub-samples is higher and varies. ●
