GREATER TORONTO EDITION, MAY 4–11, 2013
The new Ontario government is helping students and young people fi nd summer jobs.
Through Ontario’s Summer Jobs Strategy, the government helps students fi nd sum-mer jobs or launch their own summer busi-ness. In addition, employers are offered a $2-per-hour hiring incentive to hire sum-mer students.
“With a summer job, young people can earn money for their studies, build personal and work skills, and contribute to Ontario’s economy,” said Minister of Training, Col-leges and Universities Brad Duguid.
Job opportunities are now available through Ontario.ca/summerjobs, where stu-dents can:• Search for a job through Employment On-
tario partners.• Strengthen their marketing and resumé
writing skills.• Apply for funding to start their own Sum-
mer Company.• Apply for a job with the Ontario govern-
ment.“These are much more than summer jobs.
We’re giving these young people the chance
to learn new skills, make a positive contribu-tion to their communities and the opportu-nity to explore options for their future,” said
Minister of Children and Youth Services Te-resa Piruzza. “Ontario’s youth represent the future of our province and our economy,” said Minister of Economic Development and Trade Eric Hoskins. “We are working to en-sure that our young people can gain the skills
and experience they need to thrive and con-tribute to Ontario’s growth.”
Supporting youth employment and help-ing young people get summer jobs is part of
the new Ontario government’s plan to create a fair society and a strong economy. QUICK FACTS• Ontario’s Summer Jobs Strategy is open to
youth who are planning to return to school this fall.
• Last summer, the government helped more than 100,000 students fi nd jobs and access job services.
• Job search support for students and young people is available year-round through Em-ployment Ontario. ●

“We’re giving these young people the chance to learn new skills, make a positive contribution to their communities and the opportunity to explore options for their future.”
Helping newcomers settle and succeed
Ontario is increasing support for settle-ment programs and helping more than 80,000 newcomers get the services they need to set-tle and fi nd jobs.
“When newcomers settle and succeed in our province, everyone benefi ts,” said Min-ister of Citizenship and Immigration Michael Couteau. “By working with our diverse pop-ulations, we are opening up new opportuni-ties for Ontario’s newcomers and growing a stronger, globally connected economy.”
Through the government’s Newcomer Set-tlement Program, 98 organizations across the province will receive support over the next two years to help connect new immigrants with language and job training, and other commu-nity services. This year’s investment will allow select agencies to explore new and innovative ways to deliver support to vulnerable immi-grants and underserviced communities.
“Settlement agencies provide newcom-ers with the important tools they need to
get jobs, pursue education and gain access to health and social services,” said Execu-tive Director of Rexdale Women’s Centre Fatima Filippi. “We help them reach their goals, so that they can start contributing to their communities faster. This support from the Ontario government is vital. It will help newcomers succeed and grow Ontario’s economy.”
Enhancing newcomer settlement services is part of the province’s Immigration Strategy and supports the new Ontario government’s efforts to build a healthy province and a fair society.
QUICK FACTS• Since 2003, Ontario has increased fund-
ing to settlement programs by almost 80 per cent.
• More newcomers immigrate to Ontario than any other province – nearly 40 per cent of Canada’s immigrants land in Ontario. ●

GREATER TORONTO EDITION, MAY 4–11, 2013
Most companies know the kind of talent they need to support their bottom line, such as people with a global mindset, but few have the strategies in place to get the skills they need in the long-term, says Ernst & Young – named today as an eight-time Great Place to Work® award winner in Canada.
“Building a leading workplace culture is an ongoing journey. Though our work is never done, we’re proud of this award, and of our people across the country that make our work-place better every day,” says Stephen Shea, Ernst & Young Managing Partner, People. “In our fi rm and beyond, we’ve seen repeatedly that high-performing companies successfully strategize to stay competitive in the recruit-ment and retention landscape, building high-performing teams as a key driver for staying competitive in the overall business landscape”
What are high-performing companies do-ing differently when it comes to talent man-agement? They’re successfully linking pay with performance, developing customized training and development programs, and in-vesting in good people to meet fi nancial tar-gets, according to an Ernst & Young report, Paradigm shift: Building a new talent man-agement model to boost growth.
These are precisely the types of practices the Great Place to Work award acknowledges – recognizing organizations that actively and
successfully foster trust, pride and camara-derie amongst their employees. And a quick look at the award winners confi rms the fi nan-cial results do follow.
“Businesses need to strategize to attract the right talent to build high-performing teams, while also giving their top performers the opportunity to challenge themselves in new markets, says Shea. “These experiences will help employees gain exposure on a global scale, and grow their agility and apprecia-tion for working across borders and cultures. Today, a strong talent management strategy needs to go well beyond a strong head offi ce.”
For its part, Ernst & Young has strength-ened its connection to fi rm counterparts around the world in recent years, earning the fi rm a Best Multinational Workplace Award last December, in addition to this latest acco-lade from the Great Place to Work Institute. Internally, employees use a host of tools to promote collaboration and knowledge shar-ing across borders and service lines.
To keep its talent strategy informed and evolving, Ernst & Young proactively mea-sures its progress for maintaining a leading workplace culture, including its internal Global People Survey (GPS) of employees and an external employee value proposition study, benchmarking results against compet-ing organizations.
What talent?

Harris Institute achieves unprecedented milestone
Harris Institute and the University of the West of Scotland now offer two college Diplo-mas and a Master’s Degree in 32 months with scholarships and bursaries.
“Our innovative partnership with UWS is a timely acceleration of the postsecondary sys-tem that achieves comprehensive education and signifi cant credentials at less cost in a far shorter period of time,” says John Harris, pres-ident of Harris Institute. “To achieve equiva-lent credentials in the conventional postsec-ondary system takes 8 to 12 years.”
Harris students who complete both the Au-dio Production and Arts Management Diplo-ma programs in 20 months receive $2,500 ‘Mu-sic Business Professional’ bursaries and $3,500 ‘UWS Scholarships’ for 12-month Master’s Degree programs in ‘Songwriting and Perfor-mance’ or ‘Music: Innovation & Entrepreneur-ship’ with $1,500 accommodation bursaries. UWS students receive full scholarships for cer-tifi cate courses at Harris during their summer work placements in Toronto.
“This strengthening of our strategic part-nership further develops our unique brand of practice-based, industry-focused education,” says Anne Gifford, Head of the UWS School
of Creative and Cultural Industries. “Harris ‘double diploma’ graduates can progress to a Master’s qualifi cation that has been designed with industry. The sector leading collaboration delivers value to students and contributes to internationalism and global citizenship.”
Over the past eight years, 52 Harris gradu-ates have earned BA (Hons) Commercial Mu-sic or BSc Music Technology degrees at UWS in 8 months on full scholarships. Eighty-six UWS students have completed ‘fi eld of study’ work placements in Toronto. The partnership includes senior faculty exchanges and stu-dents at both institutions coordinate the ‘Inter-national Artist Exchange.’
The University of the West of Scotland is the largest modern university in Scotland with campuses in Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton, Paisley and a creative hub in Glasgow. UWS provides relevant, high quality, inclusive higher education and aims to have a trans-formative infl uence on the economic, social and cultural development of the West of Scotland, and beyond.
Harris Institute is an international leader in audio production and music industry educa-tion. Founded in 1989, the college was the fi rst to introduce accelerated 12-month Diploma programs taught by active industry leaders. After completing a survey of graduates from Canada’s leading media arts schools, Jim La-marche ranked Harris Institute ‘The Best in Canada’ with A+. The complete ‘Final Report Card on Media Arts Education in Canada’ is at: jimlamarche.wordpress.com. ●
