MIDDLE CLASS
William Blackstone
A well-known lawyer of this time was William Blackstone who did a lot of writing that supported the
English law which eventually came to change and improve the law. Blackstone permitted the law that stated
husband and wife to be considered one person. This meant that the husband had full control over their land
and money. The women could not own land under her name and her wages were given to her husband.
Blackstone also made some changes to the law that were appreciated more and were fair. He deprecated
slavery and developed the concept that as soon as a slave in in England they are free. He also worked to
provide security and safety for the Jewish, Turkish and anyone who praised Christ.

LOWER CLASS
Lower class citizens worked doing jobs they learned from their mother or father such
as; farming and blacksmithing.
Farming
About 30% of England's land was suitable for growing crops. Most farmers kept their
crops and livestock for their own food. The common farm animals were pigs,
chickens, sheep and cows. Horses were scarce and only owned by large land owners.
Oxen were also a common farm animal that lived on poorer food and could be eaten.
Blacksmithing
Blacksmiths were in charge of making and repairing tools and implements from iron
and steel. Blacksmith also sometimes had to pull teeth because there were no
dentists in the village.
