CURATOR NOTE

I first met Abigail Browde and Michael Silverstone a few years ago on the phone as part of a grant panel process. I had been appointed the first reader/presenter for an application they had submitted to a foundation. They ended up not getting the grant (no doubt because I was the lead read) but ended up doing a different version of the project anyway, which is the show you’re about to experience.

I remember our chats on the phone and thinking they were both straight shooters and very likable. That was even truer when I met them in person a year or so later. Lots of people describe them this way, as likable, down-to-earth and not-trying-to-be-too-cool. While this point may feel minor, I think their humility says a lot about the art they make.

For example, they were supposed to be premiering a new show this weekend but became unhappy with it during the creative process and delayed it a year. Rather than be upset I was impressed they had enough self-awareness to make that call. Over the past three weeks, they’ve been in residence here at OtB working on that project with test audiences. Apparently, each audience helps them stage the show. They work a lot with people who aren’t trained performers and it’s clear they like the quality of non-theatricalized bodies and voices. I do, too. Really young and really old people can stand out in this regard if used right.

At this point the performers in Employee of the Year are savvy theater veterans, having started a few years ago when they were all nine years old. Apparently this will be the last time this cast will perform the show. While I don’t think that’s because they’re getting too old to perform this work, it is an interesting juncture to consider the profundity of simplicity and what can be achieved through humble means. And humility.

David Cale is the writer and performer of ten solo works including The History of

Kisses, Palomino, A Likely Story, Lillian, Deep in a Dream of You, Smooch Music and The Redthroats. He wrote the book, lyrics, co-composed the music for, and appeared as Floyd in the musical Floyd and Clea Under the Western Sky, inspired by the character of Floyd Duffner he portrayed in the film, The Slaughter Rule. He has written lyrics for songs sung by artists including Elvis Costello, Debbie Harry and Jimmy Scott. His plays include Betwixt and The Blue Album, written and performed with Dael Orlandersmith, presented at Long Wharf Theatre. David is the recipient of two Obie Awards, two Bessie Awards, two NYFA Fellowships and a Solo Performance Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Jessica Pabst is a New York City-based costume designer for theatre, film, opera and dance. Jessica won the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award for Best Costume Design for The Whale at Playwrights Horizons. She was also a 2012 Drama Desk Nominee for Outstanding Costume Design for She Kills Monsters. Her work has recently appeared at The Public Theater, Second Stage Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, New York Theater Workshop, The Vineyard Theater, and Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Dallas Theater Center, University of Rochester, Juilliard, and Barrow Street Theater.

Eric Southern is a Brooklyn based designer for theater, opera, and dance. With 600 HIGHWAYMEN: The Record, Empire City, This Great Country, Employee of the Year, Everyone Was Chanting Your Name.
