SMARTPHONE VIDEO PRODUCTION TIPS KEYS TO SUCCESS
KEYS TO SUCCESS: WRITE IT OUT
PUT IT ON PAPER FIRST - Who are you trying to influence? - What’s the most efficient way to tell them? - Can you explain your message on paper? - Does it make sense to your teammates? - Where/When/How will you make your video?
KEYS TO SUCCESS: REHEARSE
PRACTICE BREEDS CONFIDENCE - There’s zero cost and lots of benefit - Have a friend observe - Record, watch and even share your
performance, then adjust
SMARTPHONE CAMERA STRATEGY
BACK-FACING CAMERA vs SELFIE CAMERA - The “back” side camera on most smartphones
records a much better resolution than the “selfie/front” side camera. Use it!
- Hit the record button, then get the camera into place, then get yourself settled… and then deliver your performance. (Don’t worry, we will edit out all of the set up moments.)

SMARTPHONE CAMERA STRATEGY
RECORDING SETTINGS - Both: When possible, record in 16x9 ratio (the
same ratio as this page) - iPhone: In the Camera app, upper left corner
of the recording interface—tap the recording settings until you see “30 • 4K” (This records your videos at 30 frames per second in 4K resolution)
- Android: In the native Camera app, press Settings (gear icon), under Video turn on ultra-high resolution video (4K).

SMARTPHONE CAMERA STRATEGY
PLACEMENT/RIGGING - Always film in horizontal/landscape mode - Insure the image is level - Create a stable, steady camera position for filming - The presenter can move a little, but the camera
should remain in a consistent position - Presenter should fill frame (waist/chest up)
LANDSCAPE/HORIZONTAL
A PAPER CUP, CUT WITH SLOTS FOR THE PHONE AND COINS TO STABILIZE CAN SERVE AS A TRIPOD
A PAIR OF CUPS OR BLOCK CAN STABILIZE A PHONE ON A FLAT SURFACE
SMARTPHONE CAMERA STRATEGY
LIGHTING - The Sun is your best source of lighting
(especially if it’s overcast—then the light is evenly dispersed)
- You want the strongest light source either facing the Presenter (Option A) or to one side (Option B)
- Try turning on an off various combinations of lights to see how they look to your smartphone

SMARTPHONE CAMERA STRATEGY
SOUND - All Locations: Turn off background noise (i.e.
compressors, fans, radios, etc.) before recording - Interior Locations: If you can, stand on a blanket
and/or cover the floor with soft materials to help reduce room echo
- Exterior Locations: Use bluetooth earbuds; they’ll help reduce background and wind noise
- Speak loudly without shouting, slowly and face the camera—it will work!
SMARTPHONE CAMERA STRATEGY
BACKGROUNDS / WARDROBE - Consider what’s behind you: ‣ Clean, simple, uncluttered backgrounds work best ‣ Avoid logos or brands not affiliate with LOL ‣ Avoid having moving fans or bright lights behind
- Wear solid colors, if possible. But avoid wearing a color that matches your background.
- LOL logowear is appropriate but not necessary
ACTING!
TIPS FOR BEING ON CAMERA - Take your time! You can always record and
send multiple takes; we’ll edit the best ones. - Body language - Sit forward. Stand tall.
Don’t slouch. - Don't cross your arms. - Give us a nice smile BEFORE you speak, and
once you finish, give us another smile and hold it for a second. (Don’t rush to turn off the recording.)
TRANSFER / UPLOAD PROCESS FOR FOOTAGE
USE ANY FILE TRANSFER SERVICE - If you’ve installed OneDrive on your smartphone, use
that! It’s a great tool for sharing files. - If you’re on an iPhone, try using the included, free
iCloud service to upload and share files - If you’re on an Android, try using Google Photos - When/where possible, always select to upload, share
or save the highest quality, largest size video files - We can work with files sent via any service
