Learn more about what it means to be a leader. Learn how to lead! Common Purpose are running two courses on campus this May:
9-11 May 2016: for students with a disability and/or students who face significant challenges or difficulties due to their health, wellbeing or personal circumstances.
16-18 May 2016: open to all students.

Challenge Leadership: Thursday 12th May, 10:30-4:30, HJB 017
This one day course will consider the concept of leadership, challenging you to understand it in a different light. You will consider different interpretations of the what ‘leadership’ means and so will begin to examine some of the things that leaders practically do when making extraordinary things happen around them. You will explore your own experiences and thoughts of leadership and identify skills and qualities of leaders.

Languages Online (LOL) – learn a new language – for FREE!
The University has a limited number of Rosetta Stone® licences for on-line language training in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Dutch, Mandarin, and English as a Foreign language. Materials are designed for learners of all abilities from beginner to lower proficiency, offering practice in grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension, and pronunciation, and learning is self-paced through on-line materials. This is ideal for anyone wishing to maintain or improve their language skills, prepare for a visit overseas, or add to their CV with an eye to future employment. Volunteering is a perfect way to enhance your employability and your personal / professional development. Here at Careers Volunteering we are able to offer a service that puts you in touch with local and national volunteering opportunities and contacts.

Looking to try something new? Want to get involved in volunteering but find it hard to make a regular commitment? This option is for you! Winchester Hub are organising special Give It a Go volunteering opportunities in the local community especially for the employability and skills weeks. It’s really easy to get involved - just sign up to the opportunity you’re interested in, then meet us on the day at a designated spot to travel to the project together.

Open to any students, graduates or staff interested in or who have been volunteering abroad.This session will discuss how volunteers can continue their engagement at home and to continue having an international impact within the UK.

Write for Rights: Thursday 5 May, 12-3pm, MB 116
Join our Write for Rights campaign and write a letter, sending a message of hope to someone suffering human rights abuses. Presidents, police chiefs and prison governors do take note when they receive hundreds of appeals to release a prisoner, stop the harassment of an activist or change an unjust law. Use your freedom of expression to stand up for the freedom of others.

Zooniverse Challenge! Throughout the assessment weeks
Looking for ways to make an impact from the comfort of your own sofa? The Zooniverse is the world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research. Projects are made possibly by volunteers—hundreds of thousands of people around the world who come together to assist professional researchers! From Penguin Watch to Operation War Diary, Chimp & See to Fossil Finder, there are projects to suit all interests and you don’t need any specialised background, training, or expertise to participate in any Zooniverse projects. We are challenging as many Winchester students as possible to get involved with a project this summer!

British Red Cross – volunteer to help out in an emergency situation
The Hampshire branch of the British Red Cross is piloting an exciting new project, recruiting 250 volunteers to be trained and ready to help if an emergency situation ever arises in the county. This information session is for those who want to find out more about the amazing work of the charity, what the volunteering roles will involve and how they can apply.

Dementia Friends – this session is aimed at raising awareness of dementia and encouraging people to be ‘Dementia Friends’ in their community.
Dementia Friends’ is a programme initiated by the Alzheimer’s Society in association with Public Health England, to encourage more dementia-friendly communities. Dementia Friends learn about what it is like to live with dementia and will become part of a national initiative helping people living with dementia to feel included in their communities.

Anyone of any age can become a Dementia Friend and, from helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media, every action counts!
This hour-long session is run by a Dementia Friends Champion - a volunteer who has taken the Dementia Friends Champions’ training. By attending this session you will learn more about dementia and how you can help to create dementia-friendly communities.

This session is for any student interested in a career in teaching and is run by Kriss Turner from the University’s Department for Teacher Development. Due to changes in national allocations, you will need to provide prompt and strong teacher training applications. This session will explain the similarities and differences between postgraduate training routes such as PGCE, SCITT, School Direct and Teach First. It will also explore:
• Which age range to concentrate on
• What awards are available, with or without masters credits

The process of finding a graduate job can be a difficult one. This hands-on workshop with Laia, Faculty Employability Adviser, will help you feel more confident in your job search by giving you the tools to identify jobs to suit you, explore different job search methods, organise a search and professionalise your approach. You will have the opportunity to explore:
• pros and cons of different job search methods (recruitment agencies, jobs fairs, online job boards, networking, etc.)
• which job search methods work best for you and your career objective
• different strategies and sources to help locate jobs online
• how you can take control of your job search – job search planning
• how you can present a professional image (CVs and online profiles)
• how to set realistic goals and determine your next steps – develop your own action plan
