Empire Announces Master of Legal Studies ProgramAs Empire College School of Law celebrates its 40th year, we are proud to announce a Master’s degree in Legal

Studies. This nationally-recognized program will be offered on campus beginning this Fall. The program will giveNorth Bay students the opportunity to pursue diverse career opportunities through the acquisition of a foundationalunderstanding of the legal system, or as background for future graduate work.

“The Master of Legal Studies program extends Empire Law School’s rich history in the community and network ofdistinguished faculty who are experts in the fields of law they teach,” Empire law dean William Robertson said. “Thisdegree gives students a competitive edge in the marketplace by helping them gain an educated appreciation for theintricacies surrounding the intersection of law, public policy, and the professions.”

Master’s candidates take some of the core classes in the traditional Juris Doctor curriculum (ex: contracts, torts, crimes) as well as their choice of elective courses which impact or define their particular area of interest. Professionalsfrom diverse fields, including banking, finance, insurance, education, law enforcement, human resources, and sales andmarketing all deal with the law as it is applied to their professions. With greater sophistication regarding legal principles,Master’s candidates will increase their ability to identify and analyze legal issues within their workplace environment.

The Empire Master’s program has received approval from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges andSchools, a national accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for HigherEducation Accreditation, as well as the California Committee of Bar Examiners’ acquiescence.

To qualify for admission to the Master of Legal Studies program, applicants must have earned their bachelor’s degreeand have strong letters of recommendation. After completion of the 36-unit, 2-year program, graduates may continuetheir studies for an additional two years to earn their Juris Doctor degree.

News from the Business Administration Department

Meet your Student MentorsKarissa Anderson, Medical – I have a lot of support from friends and family at home; they push me to succeedand continue on my path to success. Support is really important and even if you don’t have it at home, you will have ithere at Empire. I am here not only as a mentor but as a friend as well. Ask me anything you want and I will try to helpyou as best as I can.

Shane Benedict, Medical – Empire College has really opened my eyes to seeing my dreams. It also has strength-ened my knowledge, boosted my self-esteem, and given me many opportunities to grow more in what I want to become.I hope someday to work in pediatrics because I love kids.

Shawn Conley-Balistreri, Accounting – After serving 11 years in the U.S. Navy and fighting a battle withbone cancer, I decided that I was ready to go back to college and get a degree in a field that was different from my past. Itried other colleges, but I didn’t feel like I was home until I started at Empire College. The teachers are always availableto answer questions, and the biggest plus is that I do not have to worry about signing up for a class.

Sarah Helstrom, Legal – I had worked in the retail and entertainment business for too long, and I was readyfor new opportunities. Having been told on enough occasions that I liked to argue and should be a lawyer, I lookedinto the legal field to see what options were available. Stumbling onto the path of the paralegal was the opportunity Ihad been searching for; it has been an exciting thing to learn.

Coletta Lobendahn-Joe, Accounting – I am a proud mother to two adorable littleboys. I have dedicated the last five years to raising a family and managing my household. Now that my kids are a little older and our family is in a better position, I have theopportunity to pursue my career.

Angelica Martinez, Medical – I once read a quote that said, “When your life finallyflashes before your eyes, you will have only moments to regret all the things in life you neverhad the courage to try.” This quote touched me deeply and made me realize that I wantedmore in life.

Rosa Martinez, Business – I am a single mother of two beautiful children, a 4 yearold boy and a 6 year old girl. The main reason why I am here is for me, because I know if Ido well my kids will do great. I chose Empire College because it is a great school! The staffis great; they really do help you in every way possible. I could not be happier.
