20 miles of trails.

The trails in Green Lakes StatePark are open to hikers, bicyclists andcross-country skiers. The trail thatencircles both lakes takes about twohours to complete.

The two lakes in this park aremeromictic lakes, which means that thesurface waters of the lake do not mix

with the bottom waters, thus formingdistinct water layers. They are blue-green in color and are the mainattraction of the park. These two lakesare two of only a few of the meromicticlakes found in the United States. TheU. S. Department of the Interiordesignated Round Lake as a NationalLandmark in 1975.

When the glaciers of the last iceage melted, tremendous amounts ofwater are believed to have spilled overgreat waterfalls to carve out theselakes.

While hiking around these lakes, deposits of marl (rocks that have highconcentrations of clay and calciumcarbonate) may be found along theshorelines. There are several species ofalgae and snail shells to be seen in theseinteresting reefs.

Other trails wind through matureupland hardwood forests and present awide diversity of flora and fauna to thecareful observer. Hikers may be treatedto the sound of the wood thrush or tothe sight of the pileated woodpecker.Trails through the golf course area areused in the winter by cross-countryskiers.

Rim Trail: 5 miles.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoythe beauty of New York State's FingerLakes and wine country. While you'rethere, visit Taughannock Falls StatePark, located a short drive north ofIthaca.

The hiking trails at TaughannockFalls State Park have spectacular views. The geological formations at the parkinclude 215-foot Taughannock Falls, which is 33 feet taller than Niagara Fallsand is the highest vertical single-dropwaterfall in the northeastern U.S. It canbe seen from two lookout points: onefrom below at the end of the 0.75-mile

Gorge Trail, the other from above at theFalls Overlook on Taughannock ParkRoad.

The more recent history ofTaughannock Falls goes back hundredsof years to when the Six NationsConfederacy of the Iroquois controlledall of central and western New York Stateand had domain over a much larger areato the south and west.

Much earlier, during the pastmillion years, great continental glaciersadvanced and retreated over Canada andthe northern United States. The presentFinger Lakes, including Cayuga Lake, were formed in deep troughs gouged bythe most recent glaciers about tenthousand years ago.

The streams which poured overthe newly-steepened slopes after theglaciers retreated rapidly cut into the

soft shales of the hillsides, forming thepresent day gorges. Where layers ofresistant rock (such as limestone andsandstone) were encountered, waterfallsand cascades resulted.

To learn more about the formationof Taughannock Falls, Cayuga Lake andthe ecology of the gorge, pick up anature trail brochure from the park officeor the parking lot attendant and walk theeasy trail through the gorge to the falls.Other trail activities at TaughannockFalls include hiking and cross-countryskiing.
