[Hello]

I am a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture.

I like to design, build, create, watch, grow, evolve.

Most of all, I like to make a difference, whether it be big or small, physical or emotional, so long as it’s good. I am deeply interested by the experience of architecture, and the impact it can make.

This portfolio contains my work from 2012 to 2013.

Thank you for taking a look.

S I G H Tmodern lofts

The modern lofts project focused on the issue of unused, small sites in the city of Toronto. Densification of the city is a goal, and infilling unused, small and empty parking lots, such as this site, will help to make the city more sustainable. The site of Small St. and Queens Quay is a small site of only 439 square metres, but has a wonderful view. SIGHT is developed upon this view.

SIGHT is a 12-storey loft apartment with a wide range of unit types. Orientated towards the view of Lake Ontario, the core of SIGHT is pushed to the back of its property, isolating away the sound produced by the Gardiner Express Highway. The effi cient core stores away the elevator, egress stairs, and corridors into only 42 squared meters. As a result, the back elevation is a blank wall.

The ground fl oor is a cafe and a storefront. An exploration in a commercial ground fl oor helps with the street presence of the building and adds activity to the area as well. The cafe has pivoting doors that slide to the side during the warmer months. The tables may then spill onto the outdoor patio, from where there is a view of the lake. The common space on the roof of SIGHT allows residents to have community events, such as host gatherings and interact with the other residents of the building.

Sliding perforated panels helps SIGHT maintain privacy when it is needed. The elevations of the building are determined by the occupants’ control of these sliding panels. As a result, the occupants’ response to heat, sun, privacy needs, are directly refl ected in the elevation. These panels also act as agents for interior space to expand. The generous balconies of each unit may become a part of a living room, a kitchen, or even a bedroom when the panels are closed.

NINESQUAREcombination pavillion

This two-part project was presented to the class as a nine square grid problem to solve. The first part involved creating a pavillion with a nine square grid, sixteen columns, and an architecturally pleasing purpose. Individual pavillions were then drawn at lottery to be combined conceptually and architecturally. Working with Valerie and Alexander, each of our pavillions featuring the concept of compression of space, of flowing ramps, and of a folded plane came together as a dome-type structure.

An occupant would walk up the ramps, experiencing the outside through rhombus windows that cast interesting shadows and light into the space. At the top of the ramp, there is a large opening, where finally, the completed picture of what was only small glimpses through previous windows is shown.

The AugmentumALAE is an impermanent, 3.4m high module, situated in any place of social gathering, with the ability to collapse and expand, allowing ease of transportation. Each segment of the module rotates around a central, height adjustable column, allowing the module to be easily set up at many locations, and packed up once it needs to move. The AugmentumALAE’s wings illuminate at night under which there is seating and a table for people, performers, and vendors.

MANAUS ESCAPEsustainable oasis

This oasis is located in the Amazon Rainforest, a hot humid region. Its typology fi ts in with the surroundings, built with Guadua Bamboo, found native to the Amazon Rainforest. Its architecture features a high-set fl oor and an open plan, allowing ample ventilation, and a large roof overhang, shading the porch and all the openings. The high roof is a double roof, allowing for hot air to escape upwards and cool air to draw in. The open plan allows cross ventillation, especially when the panels on the North and South side are slid open. Its North and South sides are also completely operable, allowing the N, NE winds to penetrate the Oasis, creating a breezy, relaxing, interior space to sit, rest and enjoy.

The fi rst fl oor is an open, transformable space that allows for social areas, study areas, and living areas. The second fl oor is divided evenly to house four students and is open to a bright atrium. A planter under the stairs provides green space. All the bedrooms and bathrooms have the same area and space, meant to be shared equally by four students.

PROJECTS:

As a summer intern, I worked on different projects, primarily St Catharines Spectators Facility. During my time there, I took care of all the presentation boards for St. Catharines Spectator facility and many aspects of the interiors including creating coloured sections, completing the room fi nish schedule, and creating plans that were included for the 90% submission. I used a variety of programs such as AutoCAD, Sketchup, Revit and Adobe CS6.

In order to develop the interiors of a 5500 seat arena, I had to do research and meet with different sales representatives in order to fi nd the best product. Factors that I had to consider included budget, qual-ity, technical support, and more. As I made design decisions inspired by the theme of earthly grape vines, others in the team needed to be updated along with the drawings and room fi nish schedule.
