Dear Friends, In the last couple of weeks I have done my annual duty and gone around collecting for Christian Aid – delivering envelopes and then going round and ringing doorbells and collecting them, hopefully filled with money, a few days later. While I do not exactly look forward to doing

this each year I do find it fascinating in what it reveals about people’s attitude toward giving to those less fortunate than themselves. You get some interesting responses. Firstly, there are the majority who give cheerfully and who in many cases amaze me by even having their envelope by the door, filled and ready to be handed over. And this includes people in the sheltered houses whom I collect from and who cannot be well off but who are nevertheless happy to give. This is a delight and encourages you as you move to the next house… This may contain the person who dismisses you very gruffly, announcing, ‘I’m an atheist!’, or ‘I’m not a Christian!’ For them Christian Aid is too Christian. Of course, what I want to say to them is that if they are atheist or not Christian, so are the vast majority of those who benefit from Christian Aid. Christian Aid does not just work with Christians. Charity, like justice, is impartial. Then there are those who close the door on

you, saying, ‘No thank you, I give to other charities’, and I guess that this excuse has some weight. After all, Christian Aid is not the only charity working for a better world and if you prefer to support something else then that’s fine (though I always feel like saying, ‘well as a generous person of goodwill, why not push the boat out and show a little solidarity with Christian Aid and put in a pound or so’). Then there are those (just one or two) from who I receive a dismissal accompanied by a lecture about how Christian Aid gives money to terrorists (or ‘bandits’ was the word one man referred to this year). What do you say? It’s a bit like people who say they don’t come to

church because some long past minister didn’t visit their granny when they were in hospital. Yes, possibly Christian Aid may have made mistakes in the past (though of course one person’s ‘bandit’ is another person’s freedom fighter), but I feel like saying ‘Get over it! This is what they give to now and there is not a ‘bandit’ in sight!’ Lastly, there are those (there were two for me this year) who just look at you with contempt and tell you to go away. ‘Get away from my door!’ ‘Don’t come back again!’ If you’re like me, these disturb you more than they should do. It makes you realise that knocking on doors on behalf of others makes you quite vulnerable and some people like to take advantage of that. But maybe that’s just a tiny example of what it means to take up the cross. So that’s my experience of Christian Aid collection. Overall it is still an uplifting experience. It helps me understand better what it means when the Bible says, ‘God loves a cheerful giver’ (2 Corinthians 9:7), and the giver can be the person on either side of the door. Best wishes, Lance

Magic Breakfast - Delivering Fuel for Learning

Changing lives for 22p a day Breakfast can be a rushed job, especially when Mum, Dad and kids have different places to go and different times for leaving the house. Sometimes there isn’t time for breakfast, but for some families there isn’t any breakfast at all. It’s been estimated that more than half a million school children arrive at school hungry or malnourished in the United Kingdom, despite the country’s position as the seventh richest economy in the world. Magic Breakfast, which provides a choice of porridge, protein-enriched bagels, healthy cereals and fresh orange juice for each child, seeks to make a difference in primary schools in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol, Sheffield and Rotherham. All the schools concerned have more than 35% of pupils registered for free school meals (the national average is 17%). This works out at 8,500 meals each day. Two companies have come on board to help the charity to keep costs to a minimum, so the cost for each serving works out at 22p a day/£3.50 a month/£42 a year. A hungry child finds it very hard to concentrate and learn, so it could be argued that investing in breakfast is investing in education via the power of brain food! To find out more you can look at the display material in the foyer or go online at www.magicbreakfast.com Cheques may be made payable to Magic Breakfast and gift aiding, via the standard Emmanuel white envelopes or the ones from Magic Breakfast (charity number: 1102510), adds to your contribution.

June 3rd Members Own 10th ‘Little Treasures’ 17th Norman Gulliver 24th Brian Mizon On the Tuesday after Easter we enjoyed hymns and readings following the theme “Touched by the Risen Lord”. This included Bible readings along with items written by a woman visiting the Holy Land and reflecting on the people Jesus met after his resurrection. Then followed a simple prayer, “Loving Lord, Risen Christ, we thank you for the way you touch our lives – each according to our particular need”. Ray and I were unable to be at the Tea Party until ‘the party was over’ but we heard that the afternoon had been much enjoyed – Lance playing his guitar; Penny playing the piano; some lovely hymns to sing and lots to eat!!! Margaret Jude brought to life for us the story of Esther – a story of racial prejudice, love and courage – and yes, some harsh dealings. Esther used her gifts and courage in the service of her people – she was so much more than ‘just a woman’. Margaret portrayed the belief that when we trust our talents and ourselves into God’s hands the results can be surprising.

Hilary Ritchie, the Hospital Archivist at Addenbrooke’s, gave us a fascinating, illustrated talk on the History of Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Founded by a young Doctor John Addenbrooke it opened in 1766 in Trumpington Street, Cambridge. Sadly he died aged 39 but he left just over £4500 in his will "to hire and fit up, purchase or erect a small, physical hospital in the town of Cambridge for poor people". I wonder what he would think of it now!

It was a great shock when just a few days after Easter Stephen Thornton suffered a serious brain haemorrhage from which he is now, thankfully, recovering after a spell in hospital. It will be a long haul back to full strength for Stephen and we pray for him and Lorraine and their family, especially with their responsibilities to Stephen and Lorraine’s elderly parents. We must be thankful that the serious car crash that Rosemary and Mike Johnston were involved in did not inflict greater injuries, though unfortunately it has certainly knocked Rosemary back, just when she was recovering well from previous illness. Please pray that this will only be a temporary setback. Ken Livesley continues to manage well at home with support, while Val Livesley is still in Langdon House. Jan Tucker is making good progress after her hip replacement, and remember too Lila Porter who struggles with hip problems. We continue to pray for Elizabeth and Peter Hewitt, both of whom have health problems and are unable to be as active as they would wish to be. Please continue to pray for Chris Dennison and Karen and Euan, as well as his parents Margaret and Ted who are much involved in his care; for Mary Buddle and for Vivian with his eye-sight difficulties, as they look after each other; and for Norman Griggs, recuperating from having a kidney removed and with some additional complications. Those who remember Elsie and Geoff Galley who moved down to Chelmsford in 1995 to be nearer their daughter, Linda Freestone, will be sad to hear that Elsie passed away on 5th May after a short illness. We send our love and prayers to their family at this time. Lastly, our commiserations to Mark Reader who stood as Labour candidate for the Castle ward in the recent local elections where an

independent won the seat. Finally, we have received greetings from Emmanuel and Tabea Busch in Edinburgh, and they would like to thank everyone who sent good wishes to them on the safe arrival of Amos Emanuel—seen here on the left!

DEEP PEACE

Deep peace of the running wave to you. Deep peace of the flowing air to you. Deep peace of the quiet earth to you. Deep peace of the shining stars to you.

Deep peace of the infinite peace to you.

In August we hope to have a display sharing what has brought each of us a sense of Shalom in some way at some time. Consider the Celtic blessing above and think about a place, a poem, a picture or a piece of prose that has brought you ‘deep peace’. So often it is the personal stories and thoughts that inspire or help others and this display can only happen if we all think about taking part. What ever you can give needs to be with me by 13th July at the latest. A sentence or two about where and why would be helpful and electronic offerings would be preferred - but this is not essential. Your offering can be named or anonymous. It would be wonderful if everyone could take part - go on, surprise us all!

Thank you, Jan Nicholls
