Native American Tribes of Texas

• People arrived in Texas as long as 11,000 years ago.•When European settlers

arrived , several Native American tribes were already living in Texas.•We will talk about 6 of

those tribes throughout Texas.

Caddo Native Americans

Food• Bear, Deer• Nuts & beans• Squash, pumpkin• Sunflowers, Maize

Clothing• Animal hides• Woven cloth• Jewelry from bone

and stone

Shelter• Nomads who lived in

the Piney Woods• Beehive homes

made with wooden poles covered with grass or reeds

Trade Goods• Pottery• Tools from wood,

bone, and stone• Traded for shells to

make cups and tools

Karankawa Native Americans

Food• They gathered things

from the ocean• Turtles, alligators, fish,

and oysters• Roots and wild plants

Clothing• They made clothes

out of animal skins.• They wore very little

clothing because it is very hot they travel in water

Shelter• They lived south of the Caddos along

the gulf coast.• They had light portable homes made

of animal skins , grass mats and wooden poles.

What they did• They were great runners,

swimmers, and hunters• They made baskets,

arrows, pottery and very long bows.

• They made hollowed out logs called dugouts to travel across water.

Coahuiltecan Native Americans

Food• They used and grew

cactus plants• Wild pig, deer, rabbits

and birds• Worms , insects, and

mesket beans• They drank the sap of

the Agave plant.

Clothing / Lifestyle• Men wore breech clouts• Women wore nothing• They are very big on tradition• Shamans lead the bands that

they traveled in

Shelter• They were nomads

that lived on the dry grass lands.

• They lived in huts, wikiups, teepees, and lean-tos.

Lipan Apache Native Americans

Food• They farmed raising

maize, beans and squash• Hunted buffalo on

mustangs• If they did not have

enough food they raided other tribes.

Clothing• Men wore

breechcloths, moccasins and leggings.

• Women wore leggings, moccasins and fringed dresses made from buffalo hides.

Shelter• The lived in teepees

made from buffalo hides and wooden poles.

• They also made wikiups from reeds, leaves and sticks.

• When they traveled, they tied their shelter on dogs or the mustangs.

What they did • They rode on horses and hunted.• They raided other tribes.• They grew crops.

Comanche Native Americans

Food• They gathered food

and hunted• One main food

source was buffalo - they used every part of it even the eyeballs.

Clothing• The men wore

breechcloths, leggings and moccasins.

• The women wore, leggings, moccasins, and fringed dresses made from buffalo hides.

Shelter• They were

nomads so they lived in teepees

• They lived up in the pan handle.

What they did• They raided other tribes and took over them.• The called the land they took over Comanche country.• They made clothes , and tools out of hides and bones.

Jumano Native Americans

Food• The Jumanos that were

nomads gathered food and hunted buffalo.

• The Jumanos that were not nomads irrigated so the could grow ,maize , squash , and beans.

• They also grew cotton , and hunted buffalo.

Clothing• The clothes were

made out of cotton and animal hides.

• They learned how to weave cotton.

• They also wore animal skin loincloth and dresses.

Shelter• They lived in what is

now today New Mexico and parts of west Texas in the mountains and basins.

• The lived in adobe houses made from mud, grass, straw, clay and water.

• Some were nomads and some were not.

Trade Goods• They traded with the

Caddos.• In trade they got wooden

bows and other goods• From tribes in present

day New Mexico, they traded goods for salt and obsidian - a stone for making tools.

• They weaved
