AUGUST 2010 EMIRATES WOMAN 11

In my travels of late, it never ceases to astound me the amount of new

people I meet who are in awe of the fact that I live in the UAE. It is

commonplace to be bombarded with questions such as: ‘Have you

been to the top of Burj Khalifa? Have you ridden a camel or the

Metro?’ Battling the heat and humidity (and the frizzy hair that comes

with it), the traffic tantrums and endless hours spent in the office, it’s easy

to forget that our life in the UAE is a great (and always) glamorous one.

The month of August is different from any other in 2010 as we enter the

Holy Month of Ramadan. No matter what your beliefs, this spiritual

month is one where we can take stock and learn to become better

versions of ourselves. The pages of EW are a good place to start, and we

hope our feature The Pursuit of Happiness will inspire you to turn the

negativity of a ‘midlife crisis’ into the positivity of a ‘midlife transition’

– one based on optimism and opportunity. Have a great month.

AUGUST 2010 EMIRATES WOMAN 19

Congratulations on the sleek, slick new-look Emirates Woman magazine – I loved it. In today’s fast-paced world, embracing change is essential as it helps give your product that nouvelle leading edge. The new look does just that, while upholding its core values of candid, inspirational, intellectual and stimulating reporting. The article Why It’s Okay To Be Jealous (EW, July) got me to rethink my whole outlook towards life, while Jennifer Lopez’s shrewd business acumen taught me important corporate lessons. Emirates Woman really is a guide for the modern woman. Elsa El Osta, by email

A WOMAN’S PREROGATIVEI have often suffered from bouts of ill-timed jealousy, especially since moving to Dubai and seeing such a materialistic side to my social life. Questioning the roots of my emotions has never been an option, as I knew I wouldn’t have the answers. Reading your article Why It’s Okay To Be Jealous (EW, July) opened my eyes to the nature of my feelings but also gave me the much-needed push to start addressing them. Thank you for the insight. Irina Demidov, Dubai

THE FUTURE’S BRIGHTIt was great to see so many changes in the July issue of Emirates Woman, it really helps the magazine feel modern and fresh. The new black and white cover with Jennifer Lopez leapt out at me on the shop shelf and really embraced the idea of style with substance. I’ve been an avid reader since I arrived in Abu Dhabi and this has sealed my loyalty. Well done. Ruth Arnold, Abu Dhabi

The Pocket Guide To Barcelona (EW, July) was a great idea. Will you be doing any more, as they’re perfect city guides? Also, what happened to your big travel pieces? I used to read them all the time but I haven’t seen one in the magazine for a while. For a culture such as ours where people love to splurge on luxury holidays, it’s all about travel, travel, travel. More features please! Helena Quinn, by email

The No Frills fashion feature in the July issue was stunning, edgy and such a refreshing change to the old style of Emirates Woman. It’s about time a new breath of air was breathed into the fashion pages and this did just that – what a way to start. Angelica Bertrand, Abu Dhabi

staggering around and behaving highly inappropriately. But the real shocker, however, was that she was only sporting a boulder holder bra and a pair of very large and greying granny pants – and nothing else. Before I could say ‘Mummy, that lady has forgotten to get dressed,’ the local constabulary carted her off and out of our voyeuristic view. From that moment on, to me PDUs (aka ‘public displays of underwear’) have always been the want of rather nutty people, or now, one or two decades on, Lady Gaga wannabes.

But fashion always comes full circle and, as much as I’d like to ignore it, lingerie is literally everywhere. And having been shown on most of the international catwalks, it means only one thing – it’s coming to a mall near you, too.

The good news is that this time around, vamp is out and pretty is in; less Madonna in Jean Paul Gaultier’s conical bra, and more nostalgic Art Deco elegance and retro 50’s shapes (and, in a bid to keep up with the Joneses, I’ve thankfully managed to conquer my fear, or even embrace it). Jean Paul Gaultier has also re-incarnated the conical bra, but this time he can be forgiven as he also cut some delightful oversized French knickers – essentially shorts made of chiffon, that were so light, they just seemed to dance around the skin.

Dolce&Gabbana are offering plenty of antique lace and corsets, and are the most va va voom of the bunch. The elasticised satin body with the floral print down the middle is pretty and practical; the savvy cut kept my stomach flat even after devouring the tasting menu at Reflets Par Pierre Gagnaire. While over at Stella McCartney and Loewe, they cleverly teamed nice little underwear touches, such as pretty pastel camisoles under a sharp pant suit.

The prettiest camis by far are from a little store in Paris called Sabbia Rosa, (Madonna and Kate Moss are fans – and they certainly know their ‘smalls’) and can be ordered from www.mytheresa.com. Also check out Harvey Nichols and Galeries Lafayette in Dubai, as they both have lots of options in the lingerie department, which you can get away with when venturing into public view.

However, if my eyes settle on something beautiful yet a touch too sheer or flimsy, I just take my wares to my tailor in Satwa who inserts a flesh coloured lining, ensuring I flash a glimpse of lace and nothing else.

So please follow the mantra of less is more, and balance any flashes of underwear with something a little more covered. Because if I do catch anyone making any unnecessary PDUs, I will have you carted off by the law, too. ■

irst question’s first… When did wearing your underwear in public become a trend? Well, actually, shortly after the designers sent

bras, corsets, lace negligees, chiffon slips and suspenders down the catwalk – all as outerwear – is when.

This look certainly takes me back to my childhood, and a memory of my mother and I happily trotting down Bond Street in London hand-in-hand when I was only five. We encountered a peculiar looking woman,

andid, open and honest – Eva Mendes is who she is and makes no excuses about it. In Hollywood, a town nicknamed ‘Silicone City’, where foundations are built on falsehoods and artificial appearances Eva’s honesty is as refreshing as it is rare. The 35-year old actress, star of Hitch, Training Day, The Bad Lieutenant and The Other Guys, represents and reveals an essential

truth about womanhood, femininity and the power of self-belief. Her Cuban beauty is often stripped bare, by choice, and she refuses to build barriers around herself – what you see is what you get. It is this assertiveness, frankness and overt authenticity that is her allure, and one that affords her credibility in an industry that rarely rewards candour.

Despite her dose of realism, the judgements are there regardless, because in Hollywood if you’re beautiful you’re not beautiful enough, if you’re thin you’re too thin and if you overtly celebrate your sensuality and womanhood, you couldn’t possibly be a credible actress, too. But controversy does little to sway Eva’s confident, sultry swagger. She takes any backlashes in her stride with her usual brazen honesty, realism and ‘que sera sera’ attitude – not necessarily blasé, yet not particularly bothered.

Much of the cause of this controversy is drawn from her femininity. Refusing to conform, or apologise, for enjoying the body and sensuality she was gifted with, she doesn’t take kindly when her morals are then called into question: “I know I walk a fine line between being a respected actress and being what they call a sex symbol. It’s a hard one to walk if you want to be known as a real, credible actor,” she says. “But I’ve never been objectified. Nothing you see me do is by accident. I might act like it’s an accident, but the opposite is true. I’m incredibly calculated when it comes to my career.”

And that career is one that has catapulted her directly into the limelight, barely before she’d had time to spread her fledgling acting wings. Originally with career aspirations of becoming a nun – before she realised “they didn’t get paid” – and having been spotted in 1997 by a talent manager who saw her photo in a friend’s portfolio, the Miami-born, LA-bred Mendes quit her marketing major at a California college to attend auditions. Amid a sea of other young, beautiful Hollywood ‘wannabes’, Eva’s Cuban looks certainly helped her stand apart from the crowd. “When you grow up in LA, everybody is either a wannabe director or a producer or has a friend who is in the business, so I got a lot of ‘Your look is interesting, you should be a model or act’, but for a while it didn’t catch my attention.” Regardless, the industry eyes were on Eva and she landed her

first role in the 1998 thriller, Children of the Corn V – a film she looks back on with humour: “It was so bad! I was so ignorant that I didn’t even know acting was such a craft and that you have to work at it. I saw myself on screen and thought ‘I never want to feel this way again’… talk about over-acting.”

No matter how questionable her acting skills in her less than memorable debut, it was only three years later that a plum role came calling alongside Denzel Washington in Training Day. “After Training Day came out, people were not only recognising me, they were responding to my character. I appreciated that because I bared myself for that role – emotionally and physically – and the response felt amazing.”

Eva had the key to the golden gates of Hollywood and leading roles, alongside leading men, took a number and waited in line. She has since shared screen time with Will Smith (Hitch), Matt Damon (Stuck On You), Joaquin Phoenix (We Own The Night), Nicholas Cage (The Bad Lieutenant) and currently, trying her hand at comedy with Will Ferrell (The Other Guys). Not bad for someone who fell so accidentally into her career, yet already has over 20 movies notched up. “I took a risk with acting. You always have to take risks. I always go with my gut and it’s always right. People are scared to do that.”

Her honesty, drive, naked ambition and commitment to a script are pivotal reasons behind her success, but so to is her fundamental lack of ego. “Acting is one of those things that I don’t have an ego about. I don’t want or need to be the best person in the scene. I want to be the least talented person in the scene, because I learn so much more and it elevates my game.”

Elevating her game is some-thing of a priority for Eva and her ambition, refusing to ride on the coat tails and good fortune of her beauty. “The celebrity world can be so ugly. Everyone seems to have slept with everyone else and it’s some sort of strange cycle. I don’t want to get into that, it does not interest me. I don’t go to premieres. I attend openings of the films I’m in and that’s it. Fame and celebrity doesn’t matter to me. But The longev-ity of my career does.”

That said, Eva’s striking looks can hardly be skirted over – though recalling her youth, luck wasn’t always so on her side. “I have the hugest overbite – my siblings used to call me “Bugs”, but it’s one of the things that makes me me,” she smiles.

“I also used to get teased about the mole on my left cheek, with kids say-ing “You’ve got some chocolate on your face!” and I fell for it every time. I always said that the minute I turned 18 I would get that mole removed, but I’m happy I didn’t.”

Aware of the nuances of nature, she also says: “My best feature is my big hips. I’ve got some childbearing hips and I feel very proud of them. When I was younger I thought they were too big. I wanted to be slimmer, but now I totally embrace them.” And, as if evidence were needed to prove Eva’s confidence of the skin she’s in, Calvin Klein’s notorious ad campaigns are all the proof you need. Her TV ad for CK’s Secret Obsession in 2008

“I’VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY BODY, BUT I DON’T PUT IT OUT THERE WITHOUT A REASON. I’M NOT AN EXHIBITIONIST”

was banned due to its risqué nature – but as always, Eva makes no excuses and refuses to see her work as anything other than ‘art’, only laughing when words such as ‘voyeuristic’ and ‘provocativeness’ are bandied around. And to further cement her ‘I’ll do anything I please’ attitude, she’s back on the billboards in Calvin Klein’s newest campaign for Body Whitewashed jeans, starring alongside male model of the moment (and boyfriend of Keira Knightley), Jamie Dornan. “I’ve never had a problem with my body,” she explains. “But I don’t put it out there without a reason. I’m not an exhibitionist. But honestly, for my art, I’ll do almost anything. I’ll go there. I’m not at all ashamed or frightened of showing my body.”

That body, as with most women, is a work in progress. Eva certainly isn’t the kind of woman who forbids herself life’s little pleasures, nor palms her fans off with conceited stories and falsehoods of having a ‘fast metabolism’. “For some reason, tacos really do it for me,” she says of her anti-diet attitude. “Throw an Oreo milkshake in there and you’ve got yourself a party!”

Eva, evidently, is a real woman, and one who suffers from real issues. “I try not to go crazy but yes, I pay attention to what I eat. I do try to stay away from pasta, bread, cakes, sweets and ice cream, when I can.” But on top of this comes Eva’s prerequisite dose of realism: “I am not perfect, but I refuse to moan about flaws. Of course there are things everybody wishes they don’t have or wishes there were more of, but why even bring that up? I think it comes off as bratty.” In fact, when gearing up for the Calvin Klein shoots, Eva made a concerted decision not to diet. “I didn’t want to show up looking like the skinny version of me. I wanted the real me up there. All I did differently was increase my cardio exercise for two weeks, because I wanted these images to look like my real healthy and natural body.”

As for fashion, the brunette bombshell has fast become a red carpet essential, draped and adorned in some of the fashion world’s most elite designers – her favourites being Dior, Prada, Armani and, of course, Calvin Klein. She is every bit a symbol of modern day sensuality and femininity, who channels the sultry, sexy sophistication of the 1950s. But with the eyes of the world upon her, she says her mother is her biggest inspiration, and also her biggest critic: “Instead of looking to see what the papers said about my dress after an event, the first thing I do is check my e-mails to get mum’s verdict. Every time I walk down the red carpet, she’ll say, ‘Oh, the hair was a bit too much’, or she’ll comment on the shoes. I know she’s just looking out for my best interests and wanting her daughter to shine, and every time she loves an outfit, it makes my day.”

Other influences in Hollywood come in the guise of her peers Kate Winslet and Keira Knightley. “I’m obsessed with Keira,” she laughs. “I think she’s just got it down. She takes chances, she’s edgy but she’s always a lady – she is also so unconventionally beautiful.” As

for Kate… “I would steal Kate’s roles. All of her roles. She can do no wrong in my eyes. Not only is she the most incredible actress in the entire world, but she’s fearless. Her choices are impeccable. She can literally do anything she turns her hands to. If she gave me just two of her roles, I’d be a very happy woman.” And, whilst embracing her

Latina heritage, she also looks to her fellow Latina actresses for inspiration. “I admire all of us,” she says. “Because it’s not easy to tear down boundaries. I adore Penelope Cruz and Zoe Saldana – I just want more of us. I feel like I want to take on the responsibility of showing the world a whole different kind of Latin woman. That part of my job is thoroughly satisfying and I derive great happiness from it.”

Happiness is something that Eva exudes and it’s hardly surprising why. Not only is she one of Hollywood’s leading ladies, and one of the faces of Revlon (joining the roll

of honour alongside Halle Berry and Cindy Crawford), she is also undeniably in love. Though forever passionately private about her long-term relationship with film-maker George Gargurevich, she does admit to being blissfully content. “I’m in a committed relationship, which I don’t talk about – though that does tend to mean people make things up,” she says. “None of it has ever been true. I don’t believe in the institution of marriage. For me, if you love somebody and have a commitment that is strong and spiritual, then I just don’t think a piece of paper makes a difference.”

A modern approach for certain. But then again Eva credits herself with being refreshingly modern and someone who refuses to play by the rules. “I’m a modern woman in the sense of I take care of myself, I’m fiercely independent and I’m really ambitious. Yet I have these old-school thoughts in my mind. I do like to belong to a man.” Giving a brief and rare insight into her relationship with George, which has lasted over eight years, and survived the pit-falls of so many a Hollywood romance where so many others (including her peers), in La La Land’s industry fail, flounder or tread water, she says: “Even if you’re complete opposites, what matters is that you balance each other out – like a see-saw. You don’t want to be on the floor or up in the sky. I’m really highly-strung, loud and obnoxious. George is quiet, mild-mannered and completely rational, whereas I am highly strung.” But the reality of their relationship is love. “I love having a man in my life and being his woman at the end of the day. I know it’s a dichotomy. My secret obsession is love, love, love! I love being in love and I love having someone be in love with me. Love is the sexiest thing in the world.”

Life is clearly good for Eva right now and following her stint at Utah’s Cirque Lodge rehabe centre in 2008, where she checked herself in for some ‘down time’, everything appears on track and running the right course. “The sun’s out again. It is my time,” she

“I TOOK A RISK WITH ACTING. YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO TAKE RISKS. I ALWAYS GO WITH MY GUT AND IT’S ALWAYS RIGHT. PEOPLE ARE TOO SCARED TO DO THAT”

laughs. And that course is one that is seeing her break the mould of career confines. Eva’s not only a published author, having written her first book, Crazy Leggs Beshee, inspired by her nieces and nephews, she and George also collaborated exclusively with Macy’s department store last year to launch the interiors line Vida by Eva Mendes. Bright, vibrant and created to ‘bring a ray of sunshine and smile to my customers”, she says: “I love interior designing and would follow this profession if it weren’t for acting.”

However, fortuitous for many, acting courses through Eva’s veins; it is a job that she is addicted to, her mark has been made on the industry, and it’s one that won’t let her go willingly. In one last comment she reiterates the realism of her world – one in which she makes no apologies for who she is nor how she looks, yet one where her beauty goes far further than skin deep – she adds: “I love who I am and how I’m seen but I don’t want ‘sexy’ to be my defining characteristic. There is more to me and I would like my ambition, will, intellect and sense of humour to define me as well.” ■

“MY SECRET OBSESSION IS LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I LOVE BEING IN LOVE AND I LOVE HAVING SOMEONE BE IN LOVE WITH ME. LOVE IS THE SEXIEST THING IN THE WORLD”

or decades men and women have suffered from periods or phases in their lives when their identity, sense of purpose and role in society are called into question – the universal term coined as a ‘midlife crisis’. For women, that stage of life was once given as 40-50years of age, yet now the net casts itself wider with a 35-55 age bracket.

But according to the experts, we should shirk the yoke of the dramatic term ‘midlife crisis’, as it is one fast becoming invalid in today’s world. Instead, we should look upon these periods of dissatisfaction positively, as transitional moments of renewal and opportunity.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

EXPERTS SAY WE SHOULD BE SHRUGGING OFF THE MANACLES OF A ‘MIDLIFE CRISIS’ IN FAVOUR OF A MORE POSITIVE ‘MID-LIFE TRANSITION’, TURNING THE CYCLE OF DISSATISFACTION INTO A PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. EMILY BAXTER REPORTS

The term ‘midlife crisis’ was first coined in 1965 by Jacques Elliott, a Canadian psychoanalyst, who believed that it based its roots in a complex interweaving of different biological, psychological and social factors. Whilst the parameters of these social factors have changed over the decades, the findings still resonate today. Jacques believed that age, death, social expectations, marriage, parenthood and tragedy all played a part in triggering the dissatisfaction and trauma many men and women felt during their midlife years. More current thinking, however, takes into consideration longer life expectancy, different social expectations and responsibilities, as well as the opportunities available to us, which some experts believe have detoured us away from undergoing actual ‘crises’, instead using our experiences to bring about positive change.

One such thinker is Professor Carlo Strenger, renowned psychologist and author of The Designed Self, who suggests that we look at the midlife years as a time to grow and flourish, rather than times of crisis. “While there are those who ‘dim’ when they hit their middle years, there are a growing number of people who actually go into a higher gear,” he says in an interview with Time magazine. “They often make significant life changes and do their most significant work after their turning point. The original notion was to ‘find oneself ’ when hitting midlife, but I don’t think we should lower our expectations for the role we can play in the world after this phase.”

Emily Cheyne, founder of Know How Life, a Dubai-based professional life coaching service, also believes that the term ‘crisis’ is no longer relevant: “It is out of place in relation to what women experience these days, as it signifies despair and disaster, which is not usually the case.” More women, she explains, face a period of transition – sometimes turbulent, other times not – where it is more a sense of realisation than an actual crisis. “Men and women are still finding themselves at a crossroads, faced with the option of which path to take and the question of ‘what now,’ yet instead of considering it an insurmountable obstacle or critical deadlock, as perhaps they once did, women see it more as a time for reflection and reassessment, a challenge, an opportunity to explore their desires again and, in some ways, find and redefine themselves.”

Regarding the triggers for these periods of transition and change, Melanie Schlatter, a Dubai-based psychologist, agrees with Jacques, adding: “There is also the realisation that one has not

tapped into their life purposes, that most of a woman’s prolific events – such as career, marriage and motherhood – might well have already occurred, alongside the realisation that one still has unfulfilled dreams.” Emily suggests other triggers can be based in society and the expectations it puts on us as women. “The way humans behave tends to be dependent on society’s beliefs at the time and the individual’s perception of how they measure up to these expectations.”

The disruptive nature of a woman’s hormones during menopause also factors in, but the changes that occur during a midlife transition are far more spiritual than physical. And, adding another factor, Emily says that for women who are mothers, the moment their children fly the nest is also important in dictating thought processes regarding phases of life. The role of mother becomes less pivotal and leaves them with an expanse of time to fill. Though looking at this from a positive angle, Emily says that many take this as an opportunity to abandon responsibilities, to do something for themselves and to review and assess goals and dreams previously put on hold.

Following on from this, Emily looks at the positive and negative connotations of these phases. “The negative emotions manifest themselves in the subject’s reaction – restlessness, depression, anxiety, confusion and even a feeling of wanting to destroy what one has built and/or achieved. However, in today’s world the positive outcomes are far more widespread, with women turning negative reactions into positive actions, seeking greater satisfaction for themselves and taking the time to reassess and revaluate their opportunities, which lead to greater overall satisfaction.”

Professor Carlo adds that making integral life-changing decisions when hitting these defining years can be of huge benefit: “The midlife transition offers us opportunities to make changes. This doesn’t mean dropping everything to become a singer or athlete. But it does mean that making changes based on accumulated self-knowledge, and making fruitful use of what you’ve learned, at this stage can be deeply rewarding.”

Melanie aggress that “change is a good thing, especially in positive psychology terms, yet that by seeking change, we must also learn how to be more content when we reach our goals.” It is far less about ‘having it all’ and still wanting more, than it is about ticking all the boxes in life, yet still left wondering ‘what now’? Melanie therefore suggests that instead of looking upon these periods as daunting impasses, it is better to “find ways of fuelling internal fulfilment, rather than relying on ‘something’ or ‘someone’ to bring you happiness.”

It seems that as society has developed since Jacques first alerted the world to his findings, so has, firstly, the role of women in society – where once they were expected to play more predictable roles such as nurturers and caregivers in the home with far less focus on careers – and secondly, women’s attitude and reaction to dealing with life’s problems.

“Despite how uncomfortable, confusing and terrifying a time it can be, women nowadays see it as a challenge, reflecting on how they are going to spend the second phase of their life.” Women at this juncture now tend to battle on through the ‘what now’ phase with a ‘can do, will do’ attitude, “using the experience to gain better perspective on their lives, with the chance to find deeper fulfilment,” says Melanie, with some women (clearly dependent on how emotional and turbulent the phase is), seeing this period almost as an unexpected gift.

TAKING FOUR COMMON SCENARIOS, EW SEEKS OUT EXPERT ADVICE

CASE STUDIESFirst and foremost, invest some sincere thought in the

fact that you have more high-quality adult years ahead of you than behind you. Realise what this means and start planning for the future.

Think about what you’ve learned about yourself so far. Consider what you’ve found to be your strongest abilities and about the things that most please you, not what your parents or society expected of you when you were young.

Don’t be afraid of daunting obstacles in making new changes. Once you’ve realised how much time there is ahead of you, you will find it’s profoundly worth it to invest energy in changing in major ways. A new career choice is not an unreasonable move, for example.

You may now have a better chance of succeeding, because your choices will be based on knowledge and experience, rather than youthful blind ambition.

Finally, it is absolutely necessary to make use of a support network. Individuals should discuss major life changes with colleagues, friends and family, so they can support you in the new direction you want to take.Professor Carlo Strenger, The Designed Self (Published by Analytic Press)

My first marriage in my mid-twenties was spontaneous, short-lived and disastrous, though I don’t believe in having any regrets. Now I am remarried to my second husband John, and our marriage is solid and secure. It follows the natural ebb and flow of any relationship, but it is one based on respect and great love. Together we have survived a miscarriage and endless attempts at IVF, so we have certainly been tested. But we’ve ridden the waves together and count our blessings.

Now, however, life has thrown us another curveball. Having had our son a year ago, I’m at a juncture in my life where I’m questioning where I, as a mother, wife and career woman, go next. My husband works in advertising and I’ve always had a well-paid career in the same industry, so thankfully money hasn’t been an issue. With my maternity leave now ending, I am wondering who I am and what defines me. I’ve been doing the same job for over 10 years and no longer gain satisfaction from it. With that knowledge I know that I cannot return to the same company, but if I’m not Alison Brookes, Account Executive, who am I?

Also, having had my son later in life, I also question time and timing. I’m a devoted wife, mother and friend, but that says little about me and I need something outside of those preordained roles to give me independence and a new definition and raison d’etre for myself.

But how? I feel too old to ‘start again’ career-wise, and I know that, despite having the finances to support me, I could never be a stay-at-home mum. I feel the days and opportunities ticking by. The longer I am at home, raising my child, playing dutiful wife and mother, yet away from my career, the more frustrated and dissatisfied I feel, and feel ‘myself’ slipping away. We are all partly defined by what we do and as I’m not ‘doing’ anything at present, I’m becoming a shadow of who I am and of my potential.

I’m at a crossroads with no clearly defined path, and unless I learn how to ‘redefine’ myself, I fear it will have detrimental effects on myself and my marriage.

EMILY: “Alison is experiencing the classic ‘can I have it all’ situation or ‘superwoman syndrome’. She no longer has a ‘balanced’ life – spending too much time on nurturing her family and neglecting other areas that are important to her. She shouldn’t stop being a loving mother and wife, but needs to address the balance and introduce another aspect into her life – something that is important to her. Remember: you’re never too old to ‘start again’ career-wise and must understand that asking for help so that she can pursue a dream or aspiration isn’t failing – it can only lead to a more positive outcome for herself, which in turn will benefit the other areas/people in her life.”

MELANIE: ”Alison is an example of a person who is having almost existential anxiety where she’s questioning her own role in the world. There is certainly an element of angst here, which could lead to depression if she does not talk to someone and seek help or advice.“

FEARING THE FUTURE

IT IS OBVIOUS THAT WOMEN ARE LEARNING TO BE THE DESIGNERS OF THEIR OWN DESTINY

undergo similar emotions and times of reassessment in today’s world as they did 45 years ago and beyond. But the resounding key change is the way in which women today deal with their circumstances. Where once women might have relied on others to bring them satisfaction (friends, relationships, children) once reaching those pivotal years, and all the questions they throw up, it is now obvious that women are, and are learning to be, the designers of their own destiny. Jacques concludes by saying: “I have seen many people who at midlife finally realised how much they had so far been guided by social expectations and finally began to live the life that they genuinely wanted,” reiterating the fact that the term ‘midlife crisis’ has indeed grown tired and dated, making way for a new generational term of ‘midlife transition’ – one that focuses on the positiveness of change, optimism and opportunity.

I recently married my second husband, Chris, and I’m also about to turn 50, which I’m feeling slightly negative to. I’ve never worried about milestones, bar this one, which is odd as I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.

We’ve lived in Dubai together for just over two years, though the first 10 months we did the long distance thing, which was hard. Having only recently married, I feel we’re still in our honeymoon stage. After 13 years together beforehand, something very subtle has changed in our relationship, though we can’t put our finger on what. I can honestly say that I’m at my absolute happiest and our relationship just seems to be

getting better and better. We have three grown-up children between us, but we’re

lucky in our relationship that we’ve not had the pressures of children and the decisions of wanting them together and when. This has afforded us the freedom to do grown-up stuff. It’s not always been plain sailing, especially as walking into a relationship where children are involved adds its own pressures, but I would say everything is perfect now – Chris is home three nights a week and four nights I get to myself; the perfect balance.

I don’t think I was ever aware of hitting any specific critical junctures, and part of that might be to do with having a child at 18, so by the time he was 18 I was able to embark on a new relationship, with the freedom as an adult to choose how to spend my time. Spontaneity was something I got back in my life and that helped me miss any midlife stumbling blocks.

The only thing I could possibly wish for is a more rewarding job, as the one that I transferred to out here with isn’t as rewarding as anticipated. But my move was about being with Chris, not about work.

I understand why women suffer from feelings of a ‘midlife crisis’ – we often juggle too many balls and we don’t like to fail. But I’ve been fortunate not to suffer from any feelings of loss or loss of self, and coupled with the feelings of self-fulfilment of getting my life back now my son is an adult, I feel lucky to have avoided the pitfalls many women seem susceptible to when reaching ‘middle age’.

The only advice I’d offer is to not be afraid to make changes. Women often get on with things with a ‘just do it’ attitude, but being brave and having the confidence to make big changes is imperative to moving past periods of dissatisfaction. Chris was a major change, as was moving out here, and something that I did ‘midlife’ but it turned out to be the best decision I’ve made.

Mark and I met in our early 20s and instantly fell in love. I had always been cautious with my feelings having witnessed as a child my parents’ acrimonious divorce. It was probably for the same reasons that I sought security and commitment from marriage and we moved from love to marriage within six months. Mark represented all the things I associated with love and security – strength, financially successful, handsome, educated and kind. I was the creative one who shook up his world.

We had children and the first 10 or so years together were great. We travelled, had a beautiful house and friends, while Mark’s success as a banker gave us financial freedom and allowed me to indulge my creativity, job-wise. I took career risks and had time off after my children, all under the protective guise his finances afforded us.

In our late 30s, we hit a rut. His long hours meant I lost him emotionally – we didn’t engage, fought and grew apart. The more distant he was, the more needy and intense I grew – I hated the person I was becoming. Two years on and I suspected Mark was having an affair. One evening I broke into his computer and discovered the truth: he was in love with another woman. Someone similar in nature and appearance to me, just 10 years younger.

We split up and I changed my whole life. I moved to a rural area, got out of media and started writing books and connecting with nature. I bought a farm, a horse, grew vegetables… The material spoils of my ‘old’ life were not what I needed to feel secure. I needed a different kind of security, one I could provide for myself, one derived from my children, friends and air I breathed.

Mark and I eventually worked out our relationship and are back together, but I don’t feel ‘married’ in the same way as I did. I love him and he’s the father of my children, but I now know that love is fleeting and can be lost. It can also be found again, but now, at 41, I view the world differently. Security and emotional nourishment come in different forms now, not just from my marriage. I take time for my friendships, travel more and have my own investments. Mark is still the love of my life, but the ‘my life’ part is a complexity of layers which promises a future quite different – but no less valid – to the one I had imagined for myself.

EMILY: ”Losing a partner emotionally, rather than physically, is one of the greatest fears for women. Shereen has turned her emotional experience into something positive, resulting in her launching herself into the next phase of life, rediscovering her true values and providing her own security – something she hadn’t done before. Emotional traumas like Shareen’s often give us the courage to view and tackle life in a different way, enabling us to identify what makes us happy and how to move forward with our lives. Both Shareen and Mark need to talk to each other about their own dreams and goals, respecting one another’s life will actually strengthen their marriage.“

MELANIE: ”Shereen is neither right nor wrong in her handling of events – she has learned and is learning. In fact, whether she has had an actual midlife crisis is questionable – she has experienced significant events, which have altered her view of the future, and have benefited her quality of life greatly.“

EMILY: ”Mariella seems to have found a balance that works for her and her husband, and part of her happiness may stem from the fact that they spend time apart, allowing each other to realise and act on their individual lives, before joining up and evolving them together. My worry is that she’s becoming too reliant on her relationship for her overall happiness and needs to ensure other areas of her life are rewarded. She should use the courage she had for moving to the UAE to explore other areas of her life, especially so she can have greater satisfaction from her working life.“

MELANIE: ”As with Shereen, Mariella merely seems to have experienced various life-changing moments throughout her life and these have all lead to her making life-changing decisions in return. Through this, she has equipped herself with the ability to make changes for the better and therefore live a more satisfying and rewarding life.“ ■

Haute Couture week is the most exquisitely extravagant event in the fashion industry’s calendar. Think fashion fantasia, serving to punctuate the end of any runway reference to 2010 with a veritable visual feast. If we’re talking three-courses of fashion, couture fits the bill of a devastatingly delicious,

delicate little dessert that follows far more meaty ready-to-wear weeks. It is, however, far from meaningless flounce. The handful of esteemed designers that create couture actually craft the trends that filter through what we’ll be buying next year with limitless, decadent expense.

The present economy may not exactly call for all-out opulence, but die-hard couture fans argue will there’s no better time for a celebration of inspiration. However, is magnificence on such scale still relevant?

In the past, couture has been criticised for being an unnecessary fashion frolic; something surprisingly backed up by industry insiders who claimed that the institution was ‘dead’ just a few seasons ago. Quite understandable when you consider there’s a maximum of just 2,000 customers worldwide who fall into the realms of having realistic couture purchasing power, mainly located – who would guess – in the GCC.

Nonetheless, this purchasing power cannot be sniffed at. Turbo power, if you will. Karl Lagerfeld declared earlier this year that he has clients who “buy 26 couture looks in half an hour. No names, but they come from the Middle East.” A stance echoed by Véronique Gautier, director at Jean Paul Gaultier, who states that the fashion house has made a “spectacular recovery” after recessional knocks; with others thanking substantial increases in sales to a small but sturdy client base across China, Russia and, of course, the ever reliable Arabic market.

WHAT’S HAUTE NOW?10

Whether this is strictly accurate or a face-saving strategy, there’s no doubt that the buzz is back.

And so as the rest of the world claws its way out of financial crisis, the loud, polished week of Haute Couture stands proud. Whilst the front row remains a flamboyantly fabulous fashion theatre, the clients remain chic and discreet.

Time old traditions shifted gear this year within the occasion that began in the French royal court of Louis XVI, making cultural adaptations current. Strict rules set by the Chambre Syndicale, which regulates what is considered haute, were relaxed, while international bloggers, gossip girls and the young Brit brat-pack sat front row tweeting. We doubt Marie Antoinette would approve, but it’s time to roll with it. More importantly, the spirit of revival ran through the collections themselves, with first time couturier, Alexis Mabille, favouring a presentation of predominantly, gasp, separates over the expected gowns, and old school names vamping things up (quite literally, in Valentino’s case), blasting a breath of fresh air in the face of those critics.

IN THE PAST, COUTURE HAS BEEN CRITICISED FOR BEING AN UNNECESSARY FASHION FROLIC

Gothic gone flesh-tone, glamour and bone… Religion, sensuality and anatomy played precedence in Riccardo Tisci’s extraordinarily ornate, skeletal couture creations. Fittingly shown as an intimate ‘appointment only’ presentation through three sectioned salons, suspended garments hung akin to works of art, separated into Porcelain, Blush and Gold. Inspired by the work of Frida Khalo, Tisci referred to the ‘perfect 10’ piece ensemble as “the most ‘couture’ couture I have ever done,” and it is “a romantic way to see death.” Haunting haute, indeed.

A botanical first burst… John Galliano didn’t disappoint in terms of day one drama, with an array of floral vibrancy. Taking inspiration from

Christian Dior’s childhood garden, furthered by the photography of Irving Penn and Nick Knight, a purposeful, plumped-up recall of the tulip outlines shown by Dior in 1953

fast-forwarded floral notes into this century. Offset by raffia ties and cellophane-inspired headwear by London milliner extraordinaire Stephen Jones, each model was married into one rainbow-bright bouquet of a collection.

HAUTE GOSSIPTaking place in the green house construction situated in the Jardin du Musée Rodin, Lily Cole, Jared Leto, Blake Lively (sitting cosily next to Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington) and actresses Roxane Mesquida and Nora Amezeder watched structured, swirling hair, plum lips and effervescent colour-block eyelids sashay through the late afternoon sun.

HAUTE GOSSIPThe Grand Palais was packed. Couture first-timers Jessica Alba, Alexa Chung, blogger Bryanboy, Leighton Meester, Blake Lively and latest Gossip Girl Clémence Poésy, along with fashion connoisseurs Daphne Guinness, Milla Jovovich, Peter Marino and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld listened to a piano-pitched soundtrack by Michel Gaubert. The tracklist included Timothy Andrews’ Antennae and Lou Reed’s Small Town, whilst models sported Rouge Fatal, the burnt-red shade of lips and nails set to become our next cult colour to covet – for which bare eyes and simple, wispy unkempt hair provided the perfect canvas. And if the astrology symbol wasn’t apparent by the finale, model Giabiconi Baptiste appearing in a tux finished with pantomime lion head certainly cleared things up.

CHANELJULY 6, GRAND PALAIS, 8PM

Coco was a Leo… and not an LBD in sight (“every woman already owns one” said Karl Lagerfeld). Sergeant major navy, regal russet and softer camel tones of velvet, tweed, mesh and metallic brocades saw a modern take on chintzy embroidery. Models stalked the stage wearing next season’s sure-fire shoe shape, the calf length slouch boot, around a 20m long

bronze lion centrepiece (in honorary reference to Coco’s star sign, signified by an ornament that greeted guests in the hallway of her 31 Rue Cambon, Paris apartment). The militant theme ran through all aspects of the evening with stringent backstage security – by far the most rigorous of all the shows.

HAUTE GOSSIPOlivia Palermo, actress Marie Gillain and designer Chantal Thomass watched models with smoky kohl cat-flick eyes by Gordon Espinet and smoothed out, loose flowing hair by Orlando Pita walk to a cool mix of the track Scream by Kelis. A slippery floor plus stilettos saw more than one model take a tumble, something that paled into insignificance once the mesmerising, powder-grey “vintage” wedding gown finale appeared.

Phoenix rising… A couture collection inspired by La Fenice, the legendary Venetian opera house which, when literally translated, refers to the infamous bird rising from the flames. Elie Saab dedicated his fabric selection to the “ladies who live and lunch in Kuwait.” He certainly did – with a spicy, yet decadent display of draped organza, crepes and velvet in Hollywood-ready ball gown cuts, flashing intricately designed backs. The blaze of gilded shades of rouge and amber reflect the indulgent interior furnishings of La Fenice itself, “If a woman doesn’t want rich, she doesn’t come to couture,” said the designer backstage, and if a collection unashamedly said wealth, it was this one.

ELIE SAAB: JULY 7, PALAIS DE CHAILLOT, 12.30PM

A Twilight saga… Entitled The Dark Side of First Love, a controversial collection in couture terms, was presented by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. A nod to 60s-esque hemlines, dropped waists, babydoll silhouettes and cute teenage bow trims structured the romantic flow of monochrome, lace, washes of pastel and the odd splash of bright, blood-like Valentino red. Featuring a dress comprised of an almost bridal looking cage to represent the entrapment of young love, this collection packed a revolutionary punch that proudly saluted new generation couture.

their mark. However, if your shopping budget doesn’t quite reach price-tag heavy designer wares, yet you want more quality for your buck than basic high-street styles, Reiss’ new A/W10 collection is your seasonal saving grace.

What started as a brand predominantly associated with office chic and classic basics serving our corporate closet, Reiss has had a style shake-up and is now noted not just for its work attire, but for its seriously stylish out-of-office ensembles with a series of striking and on trend pieces. After the runaway success of the S/S10 collection (a favourite with the EW team), Reiss’ A/W10 collection has a lot to live up to, but we can tell you first hand, you won’t be let down.

After an exclusive collection preview in London for EW’s eyes only, we bring you the highlights and what you should be dressing yourself in this autumn...

THE REISS A/W10 COLLECTION WILL BE IN STORES FROM SEPTEMBER

Biker chic runs riot throughout this sub-collection from Reiss, designed for the more off-beat stylistas. The denim-led collection is awash with cropped motorcycle jackets, biker jeans, leggings and hard-edged finishings with buckles, metal detailing and some fabulous faux fur.

Get your ankles in shape as trousers, whether skinny and sleek or slouchy harem style, go cropped. Jodhpurs also leave the stables and hit the street.

Think elegant evening for the day. Structured masculinity is mixed with feminine detailing and materials for a flirty, urban blend.

DRESSESTROUSERS

THE SILHOUETTESculpted and defined, waists are nipped and the silhouette, although feminine, remains sharp.

“Thank you. Working on the whole concept has taken over two years, but it’s incredibly exciting to dream about something and to build on that dream, designing so many different facets from

the packaging to the colours, to the campaign, and now to finally have

this beautiful finished product.”

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW BEAUTY LINE

“The packaging feels incredibly luxurious and elegant, as well as evocative and sentimental. The experience of opening and unwrapping the make-up is as exciting and tactile as the product itself. The packaging subtly brings together all the influences and inspirations and it’s something that feels precious – it’s a beautiful object, one that you want to keep long after it’s finished.”

WHEN IT COMES TO THE RANGE, WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION LIE?

“I wanted to reflect the trench coat and use those iconic details like the gabardine, the texture, the different layers and the lining, but also this idea of protection and the emotional side of a trench coat. I also wanted to create something unique that you would want to keep and, as with the iconic trench coat, the functionality is as important as the style – for me it was particularly important that it was always a very luxurious experience.“

THIS IS SOMETHING VERY NEW FOR BURBERRY, WHERE DID THE INSPIRATION ORIGINATE FROM?

“The [make-up] colours are taken from the signature Burberry colour palette – natural, light, timeless and iconic. We have been inspired by our beautiful stormy, cloudy, misty, hazy skies followed by the gentle glow of the British sun.”

TALK US THROUGH THE COLOUR PALETTE…

AND THE ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN…“We wanted the beauty campaign images to be iconic – we wanted the girls to be wearing really classic yet modern fitting trench coats. We’ve worked with three British beauties, who we’ve teamed up with before and who are a real part of the Burberry family. Rosie has this effortless sexiness to her, Nina has a bit more edge and attitude and Lily is a real, effortless British beauty. When you put

them all together, you have a true classic Burberry shot.”

“Yes, we shot the beauty launch campaign with Mario Testino – he was a dream to collaborate with and his energy brought so much to the shoot and the final images. His eye and the way he sees these British girls is really unique and we wanted the continuity of the attitude of the British girl he is so used to capturing to run through the Burberry Beauty campaign.” Burberry Beauty is available exclusively at Harvey Nichols, Dubai.

Dubai is an emirate of spectacular sights. With post-modern architecture and high-rise towers that jostle with one another, the city’s aerial views provide a magnificent insight into its different landscapes – be they man-made islands or landscaped villas, magnificent highways or grand hotels, verdant green parks or giant shopping malls – taking the reader on an awe-inspiring scenic tour.

Beyond the city’s limits, turquoise-blue waters with sandy beaches, symmetrical palm trees and ancient desert landscapes provide photographers with many opportunities.

International aerial photographer, Dirk Laubner, has produced a fine portrait of the emirate that reveals why Dubai is such a popular tourist destination. Published in a single, five-language edition, Dubai – An Aerial Tour is a collection of brilliant images of the emirate and a fascinating record of Dubai from the air as we see it today. Placing tourist attractions and significant landmarks in perspective, it provides a magnificent aerial tour for visitors and residents alike.

Fashion lovers were in for a serious style session when VIPs and socialites from around the globe gathered at world famous ‘Joe’s Pub’ in Manhattan for the launch of Prada’s new sunglasses range, the Swing collection. Guests included supermodel and face of the campaign, Angela Lindvall and contemporary artist-of-the-moment Tom Sachs. The evening kicked off with a set from jazz sensation Paula West, followed by German performing arts legend, Nina Hagen. As the soirée sashayed into the wee hours, partygoers danced the night away taking advantage of the sunglasses on display, donning them just in time for sunrise…

ON THE MENUAfter trays of hors d o̓euvres, an array of food stops lined the dance floor, serving authentic Lebanese cuisine (not to mention the incredible beef sandwich station), followed by free flowing bubbly, a colourful runway table of sweetie vases and beautiful dessert canapé squares.

Blending creativity and cool, the magical city of Beirut was declared “a cultural melting pot” by Yves Carcelle (CEO of Louis Vuitton), and HE Denis Pietton (french Ambassador to Lebanon) at the opening of the first standalone Louis Vuitton store to arrive in the country last month. And what followed was a street party of epic proportions.Guests Christian Louboutin, Elie Saab and Catherine Deneuve joined Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, to mark the event, sipping early evening cocktails at the chic Louis Vuitton branch in Allenby Street, before moving on to the breathtaking party location of La Bulle. A pre-war cinema, the surviving globe-esque structure perches over Beirut from Martyr’s Square. And true to its name – ‘bulle’ translates as ‘bubble’ in English – the occasion was electric and fizzing with atmosphere. The venue provided a dark battered, urban backdrop for decoration that included a kaleidoscopic light display of iconic Louis Vuitton colour and an enormous, concave movie screen.

Lebanese singing sensation, Yasmine Hamdan, ignited the evening before gold leaf confetti explosions, bubbles, and dancing into the early hours concluded a spectacular celebration.

VIRGO (AUG 24 – SEP 23)Your smile has been absent of late, but with Pluto venturing into your chart, emotions are heading for a drastic about-turn. Hedge your bets where a suitor is concerned and learn to trust your confidantes for their advice. Stellar alignments signal an explosion of good fortune towards the middle of August – take advantage at every turn.

LIBRA (SEP 24 – OCT 22)A situation arises on Monday 30th where you’d be advised not to jump to conclusions. A heated confrontation will only add fuel to the fire. Sit tight and eventually the scales will tip in your favour. Job security is of importance this month, so focusing on the task in

hand will be imperative to ensure your future.

SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 22)There’s an electric intensity to your decisions this month, and with Venus fuelling the fire, leading with your head might be hard. An unusual event on Sunday 8th brings forth novel ideas, so use the opportunity wisely, while a power play of one-upmanship amongst friends is a dangerous dance, so steer clear.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23 – DEC 21)Sagittarians are set for a summer of extreme change. Where this change occurs is for you to decide. Being a natural spend-thrift you naturally lean towards doling out your dirhams, but a rainy day looming

on the horizon would greatly benefit from a little extra in the bank. Luxury doesn’t come cheap, but the memories will be priceless.

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 – JAN 20)Fate plays a strong hand on Friday 20th but the outcome errs on the positive, and will furnish you with the confidence to strike while the iron’s hot. Relationships need negotiating but you’ll reap the rewards if honesty is on your side. Not everyone has the drive that you do, so lead by example, especially in the workplace.

AQUARIUS (JAN 21 – FEB 19)Instigating a meeting with an old friend is ill advised at present, focus should be placed on strengthening foundations of

current relationships. Something or someone attracts your attention on Friday 27th and it instils a passion in you that has been missing of late. Harness this feeling as it’s destined to be here for a while.

PISCES (FEB 20 – MAR 20)Your agenda leaves little room for manoeuvre and a burn-out is in the offing. With Uranus, planet of freedom, courting your attention, self-administered ‘you’ time is an essential choice. Romance is like a lightning bolt on Tuesday 17th, so let your motto be ‘expect the unexpected’ and see where the journey takes you.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)Evolution means we all adapt and learn as we grow, but take note that this takes time. If a loved one is dragging their heels, patience will be your most valuable asset. Thanks to immense solar activity in your chart, a strong desire will be fed before Saturday 21st.

TAURUS (APR 21 – MAY 21)Since half of the world is slowing down this month, Taureans should do the same. Financial and romantic affairs are closely connected after Wednesday 11th, so if you’re in the market for a mutually beneficial encounter, now is the time to make it happen.

GEMINI (MAY 22 – JUN 21)Just say yes on Friday 13th and open your eyes to any of the opportunities being assertive affords you. From Monday 16th a career complication threatens to upset the applecart, but as Mars, the planet of attraction, moves into your line of vision, play this to your advantage.

CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 23)There’s harmony in your life this month, with the sweet sound of success strumming loudly on Wednesday 4th. If you’re the go-between for two warring parties, use your newly-found powers of peace to end the fight. Poise is vital towards the end of the month, so walk with your head held high. ■

As the mercury rises you may find tempers flaring, but assert common sense and channel your energies to greater good. Focusing on the future has the potential to be of higher reward, than concentrating on the niggling here and now. Monday 23rd sees a moment of clarity descend, while the return of a prodigal friend brings opportunity.

RESTAURANT ORDERS

I have a very instinctive approach to style and go with what feels right. I grew up surrounded by the Missoni aesthetic, therefore I tend to see the world through it. I always play with colours and textures; I’m never too matching, polished or neat. The only rule I follow is harmony in proportion. For the rest, anything could go…
