Biography Emily Tam, Chicago native, started designing at eight years old when her mother taught her the basics of sewing. Tam continued designing throughout her teen years and decided on Columbia College Chicago to get her BFA in fashion design. Even as a busy designer, Tam still finds time to pursue her passions elsewhere, specifically through hip-hop, jazz, and contemporary dance. She finds design and dance to be two mediums that inspire her creativity and also allow her to express it. Tam lives by her own mantra, “Find love in those who believe that it doesn’t exist.” Philosophy For Emily Tam, there is no one reason why she designs. Her philosophy is to find something positive, new, and worthwhile without searching for it. Her best life experiences happen by chance, not by force of self, and this is the method in which she approaches design. She wants to show the world her Serendipitous Innovation through crafting designs that mimic her path of identifying, pursuing, and achieving her pleasures in life. Tam doesn’t allow limitations or restraints to negatively influence her work. She embraces the hard turns life can take and interprets them in a new way.
