UL-1008 : 1.4 : “a transfer switch as covered by these requirements is a device that automatically transfers a common load from a Normal Supply to an Alternate Supply in the event of failure of the the normal supply and automatically returns the load to the normal supply when the normal supply is restored.”

IEEE, NEMA ICS : “An automatic transfer switch is self acting equipment for transferring one or more load conductor connections from one power source to another.”

SECTION 8.4.2.5 SURGE PROTECTIVE DEVICES

Recommended practice is that surge protective devices (TVSS)

be applied to service entrance electrical switchboards and panelboards,

and panelboards on the secondary of separately derived systems

that support information technology equipment (ITE),

telephone, telecommunications,signaling,television

and other forms of electronic load equipment.

SECTION 9.11.3 UPS Surge Protection“Lightning and other transient voltage producing phenomena are

harmful to most UPS equipment and to sensitive electronic load

equipment (e.g., via an unprotected static-switch bypass path

around a UPS). Therefore, it is recommended practice that both

the rectifier-charger input circuit to the UPS and the associated

UPS bypass circuits ( including the manual maintenance bypass

circuit ) be equipped with effective Category “B” TVSS protection

as specified in IEEE Std. C62.41-1991.

The required protection should be attached in both the line-to-line

and line-to-ground modes. Low - inductance connections should

be employed for this protection. TVSS devices should be connected

to the available equipment grounding conductors, not to isolated

grounding conductors.”

IEEE Recommended TVSS Selection and all Mode ProtectionIEEE Recommended TVSS Selection and all Mode ProtectionIEEE

Std 1100-1999 CHAPTER 8

8.6.1 Selection

The selection of surge protective devices typically depends on the location of the device. The

surge protective devices are recommended to be sized per IEEE Std C62.41-1991 and IEEE

Std C62.45-1992 requirements to achieve proper coordination. Surge protective devices

should be listed to UL 1449-1996. Surge protective devices used for three-phase, four-wire

circuits are generally recommended to be connected in all combinations of line-to-line, line

to-neutral, line-to-ground, and neutral-to-ground. Surge protective devices for three-phase,

three-wire circuits are recommended to be attached in both the line-to-line and line-to-ground

modes. Surge protective devices may also be specified with high-frequency filtering

characteristics.

Harmonics Harmonics Harmonics

Harmonics Originators :

Nonlinear Load

 SMPS, DC power supply/chargers

 Uninterruptible Power System (UPS)

 Frequency converters

AD/DC variable speed driver (VFD, ASD)

 Fluorescent lamps

 Welding machines

 Computers and peripherals

What are harmonics?

 - Voltage or current waveform that are not at the desired 50 or 60 Hz fundamental

frequency, but at some multiple frequency.

Page 101: Emerson's Power Solution to AAI 19-Dec-11

Effect Of HarmonicsEffect Of HarmonicsEffect Of Harmonics

 Overheating of Generator, motor, transformer.

 Overvoltage conditions on supply system.

Increased transformer losses (need to over-size)

 Nuisance tripping of circuit breakers

 Improper operation of microprocessor-based equipment

Overheating and possible resonance with capacitors

Cause fire in wiring & other distribution system equipment

Neutral burnout & the list can go on & on.

More than half of the total harmonics distortion is caused

by Third harmonics .

Page 102: Emerson's Power Solution to AAI 19-Dec-11

Third (triple-n) harmonics in the phase conductors add in the neutral

- Neutral current can be up to 172% of phase currents

Third harmonics circulate in the delta winding, causing overheating of the

Transformer

 Neutral conductors must be oversized

Eddy current losses cause excessive heating in the transformer: De-rating

required

 Breakers Must be oversized

Standard transformers DO NOT cancel harmonics

3rd Harmonics 3rd Harmonics 3rd Harmonics

“3rd harmonics is also called triple-n harmonics which has 150Hz frequency “

 ( 3 * fundamental frequency i.e 50 Hz)

Effects

Page 103: Emerson's Power Solution to AAI 19-Dec-11

 Survive

- De-rate Up-stream equipments

 Isolate

- Isolated the harmonic rich load

- Use of Line Reactors or Isolation transformers

 Divert

- Use tuned filters to reduce selected harmonics

Cancel

- Use phase shifting techniques to cancel load generated harmonics

“Harmonics” one stop solution : Liebert AF3““HarmonicsHarmonics”” one stop solution : one stop solution : Liebert Liebert AF3AF3

What is Liebert AF3?

It is an active harmonic filter which neutralize the effects of harmonics & correct the power factor at the chosen level

Functions:

 Harmonic Compensation

 Reactive Compensation

 Load balancing

 Selectivity

Ratings Available - 30,60,100,150,300 Amps

Page 105: Emerson's Power Solution to AAI 19-Dec-11

Modus OperandiModus OperandiModus Operandi

It is based on source current harmonic sensing.

Source current is fed to high speed AD Converter of DSP.

Source current harmonics are extracted by DSP.

These harmonics are injected to the load by filter.

This in turn takes only fundamental harmonic current from the mains.

Improves-Reliability of the electrical system -Reduces cable-Transformer losses…..

Page 106: Emerson's Power Solution to AAI 19-Dec-11

Liebert AF3 latest technology to eliminate harmonics injected into the

mains supply by non-linear loads.

Cancel the loads harmonic current and then obtain a sinusoidal current

in the utility.
